So 45 years on, they have been accused of ripping off the intro to Stairway to Heaven from another band! Why this long to expose them!

It's been around forever - it's not really a convincing case. I guess the ones suing are short of money now maybe?

Brighton - even Hove!

One of them owned the castle on Loch Ness that Aleister Crowley used to be in.

Jimmy page even acknowledged the similarity a long time ago. Isn't this action instigated by the estate of randy california?

Apparently statute of limitation ran out years ago, but then it was remastered and rereleased a couple of years ago so they get another chance....personally I think its nonsense but what do I know?

They were done for Black Dog. To be honest, the Stairway introduction is a common chord progression ... But it does sound very similar to Spirit's Taurus. And they did tour together. I always think copyright and music are not great partners.

The intro chords are a very common progression that has been used in many many songs and there is a similarity between Stairway and Spirits instrumental.

Perhaps its money driven...yet I cant see them winning the case...but hey ! this is America.

You could say the same for the blues. All great players borrow. Mind you, if you have heard Spirit's opening chords to Taurus, there is a case to answer. Not sure whether it is right to pursue this sort of claim in music though.

Halesowen

The similarity is only a 5 note descending major scale, a harmonic device that has been used countless thousands of times, since Bach, Pachelbel and probably predates them.

I'm aware of Zeps plagiarisms of the past and the out of court settlements, but in this instance I'm inclined to think gold digging.

Whilst Taurus may have provided the inspiration that Page and Plant then developed into Stairway, I don't think it's sufficient to justify a claim of plagiarism in the same way that the likes of Thicke and Ashcroft were found guilty of.

Don't forget Whole Lot of Love was a rip off of the Top of the Pops theme.

I don't hear any similarities between whole lotta love and American Woman.

It was Willie Dixon they had to pay out over Whole Lot of Love, as it was a direct rip off lyrically with styling and phrasing lifted directly from the Small Faces version, which Plant and Page saw them perform and expressed an interest in the track.

Ok maybe a slight similarity on part of the melody line, but nothing substantial

You'd have to talk the The Guess Who about that, as it was released after Whole Lotta Love

London and France

Led Zeppelin have never hidden the fact that they were influenced by, and borrowed chord progressions from other genres and artists; and it goes on all the time;

It's just jealousy on the part of people that didn't " make it" the way they did ;

You could sue almost any "blues player" for " borrowing" chords or progressions from any other .

I read about this 3 years ago. I've had a post it on my wall to remind me to check out the Spirt track but, just never got round to it. Speaking as an (amateur) musican it is hard to come up something completely original so I'm not going to hold it against them.
