There is house near me that has been empty with an over grown garden for about 2 years.

Its a private house and has boards up at the windows its in a disgracefull state of repairs, what a waste and shame when so many would love a home like that.

Do you know of a property near you thats empty over grown and un loved

Bolton

I can think of two near here that were in that state for years, both were eventually "rescued" and are now lived in...

There is a property I have my eye on abroad I have tried several times to find the owner but have had no joy. The same with our village although I know who owns that one. This one is being deliberately kept in its state for land ransoming very sad.

Most in fact all derelict or run down property would be in private land lord ownership. Councils just wouldnt leave a property empty far to many on the lists to do this.

Dont know what the law is on a property left empty on purpose to profit from it ???.

Brighton - even Hove!

Opposite the train station in Portsmouth is a huge block of flats - all empty and run down. Excellent position but going to waste it's a shame.

Is there a way to find out who owns these? There are some near us and frankly we'd like to buy one!

Land registry have all of the records, it's where right move (other property sites are available) get the sold prices from.

I thought they were going to introduce a law years back that councils could seize these properties, do them up and offer them as social housing?

Go tpo the goverments land registery webiste, pop in the post code etc and pay £6 for a copy of the title deeds.

That will givve you a name/names and who (if any ) the mortgage is with.

Then using the names start hunting them down via the electoral roll etc at places like 192 dot com

There is one close to me, part renovated for 3 years. Owner died, family member challenged the will, which left the house in limbo for years. Something must have been resolved, as someone has started renovating it recently.

There are a couple of estate lodge houses near where I live that I would love to do up

I find it a crying shame to see architecturally interesting buildings that are in a state of disrepair

As someone above said / you can find out for a fee from Land Registry. If it's registered , some land is unregistered.

Recently heard a rumour that The Government is looking to privatise Land Registry. I'm a little concerned how that will work out !

Best place to start is your local authority. They have a duty to hold the information of all empty properties and can put a compulsory purchase order on it or an enforced sale as the law states all properties including empty ones must be maintained to a habitable state. If they won't give the details quote the freedom of information act as its your right!!

The land of grey peas and bacon

There was a programme about this not so long ago and they restored a run down house and housed a family in it who then trashed it...

BecAuse you know it's a sought after piece of land. So someone may hold onto a piece of land that would provide an access road - get a lot of money for it then.

This. There is a large amount of open land in the middle of the village behind the empty property. So the guy plans to wind up his business next door and sell it all in one for the right price so he can cram homes onto it. Just want it for two or three houses and keep the original.

I'd say that's a bit greedy...but also a clever move

Can't fault his logic to be honest and will hopefully give a couple of affordable homes for the village so not too put out.

NW London

There's a few. Some down to neglect. Usually tight arsed landlords letting their property rot or others which have been bought by overseas investors and left to decay Cos it's the land which is the investment. The Bishops Avenue in Hampstead (Billionaire Row) is a case in point.

Central

There are thousands of these now that buy to leave owners have muscled in on our market. We're all paying over the odds for property, whilst the rich.overseas types, buy up our assets. Our prices to go up and property becomes scarcer - it's very unfair and degrades neighbourhoods.

I often pass old abandoned properties up the west coast and would love to have the time and money to restore one of them.

Also, read an article recently about entire villages in Spain being up for sale, with prices that you would pay for an average home here, in one case a local mayor was offering a village for free to anyone willing to invest money to renovate the villages twelve properties.
