"Using the sort code and account number they could use that information to pass onto third party companies to set up direct debits and also use that information to set up standing orders against your account. Usually they would require a signature and address to do that, but it all depends on how efficient the company is in seting the mandate up on your account and what information they require, also how effectively your bank monitors new mandate requests. Personally I would never give those details out to a stranger, if they want to pay me money pop to the ATM and withdraw it" Take your own sort code Take your own account number Substrate 1 from your account number and that prob a real account also Without further info it's a harmless request

"I don't believe it!!! had a guy say he would pay for a hotel, and then duly asked me for my sort code and account number!! what! never ever had that before, I'm gobsmacked that he would think I was that gullible. Anyone else had the same thing ? Did you ask him why he wanted that information ? Don't think she has I asked same question way up there and it still didn't get answered " It's such an obvious question and would most likely solve it all. Shame she's not answered it !

"Thanks for all your comments chaps I have clearly never had this happen to me before and was rather shocked to say the least, and just wondered if it was the norm. Clearly it is for some and that's fair enough, just not for me. " I wouldn't give a toss if it was indeed genuine, it would still initiate an instant block from me!

Personally I would never give those details out to a stranger, if they want to pay me money pop to the ATM and withdraw it Take your own sort code Take your own account number Substrate 1 from your account number and that prob a real account also Without further info it's a harmless request " Having seen mandates fraudulently set up on accounts from people who have just proved sort code and account numbers, I still wouldn't do it. Easy enough to trace branch address's from sort codes and generally people nievely give out their full name if asked when providing the bank details. Add an address and your well away with very little effort

"Ok so you give your bank details to someone they then pop along to the carphone warehouse and gets 2 brand new galaxy s7's using your account details for the dd. Said person sells both brand new boxed phones for £300 each and your black listed because you didn't know the items were purchased. It's happened to me that and fully only my address. " Invalid DD bank would refund immediately if no foul play on your part was suspected

"With your bank details and name he is halfway to identity theft. Add in your address - which he could probably find easily enough - and you are financially at risk, so well done for not falling for it." Thank you glad someone gets where I'm coming from.

"Some people's understanding of risk is quite funny here. Last year there were ~450,000 new sexually transmitted infections, some of which are have no cure. There were ~120,000 victims of identity theft and you are not legally liable for the money stolen. " Having had an account with Talk Talk maybe you will understand my being wary. Now please, lets put this bed! Fab is meant to be fun, remember!

"Why ask for my bank details ? was he expecting me to pay up front and then he might just accidentally forget to pay into my account. Why just not pay the bill himself ? Im a suspicious old bag! lol" You are tight to be suspicious and its an unusual scenario but giving you account and sort code details in its self is not a security issue. happens every day it when you are asked for access details that's when its a scam!

"This is beyond ridiculous; So all the people who say the OP should not give out bank details; 1. Never use a cash machine 2. Never buy anything with a credit or debit card 3. Never set up a DD or SO with any company for anything 4. Never write a cheque 5. Never buy anything online. 6. Pay for absolutely everything in cash only? " Where did you get all that from ?

"Yes but you still haven't clarified why he wanted your bank details. If you were going to pay and he was going to reimburse you, then you might not be comfortable with that method, though it's quite normal to do an electronic funds transfer. If he just out of the blue asked for your bank details, then yes, that's odd. But you started the thread and have repeatedly avoided giving any context despite several requests for clarification. So this leaves people wondering at your motives for starting the thread."
