When someone dies, mostly people you don't know, people put RIP (Rest in peace) in posts / facebook etc

What are people trying to say here

Rest in your grave, don't turn into a zombie ? Sorry you are dead (dead people don't read messages)

Just wondering

I'm not sure really but could they be referring to the soul ?

I always though it was a respect thing that you say to a relative of the deceased to show that you are thinking about them.

Never thought about it really.

I'm gravely disturbed about this.

It's a platitude that people toss out so they can smugly feel they are "doing the right thing", and even more importantly, everyone else can see it.

It's a religious term. Means I hope your soul is at rest for eternity as opposed to burning in hell or whatever your particular sect believes

i think its just a respectful comment when people are often at a loss at what to say

I think very often these things are said for the living, not the dead. If someone relatively famous dies it can be nice for the family to see the effect their loved one had on the wider community.

Maybe I'm weak, but when my father died it was nice to see how many people cared about him. It was nice to have support. We can call it insincere, but I would have been sad if no one expressed their condolences at his death.

I view it like someone is suggesting they have either a peace within their afterlife, which would be a religious slant, or that they find peace within death that that they couldn't find within their life.

I find RIP so horrid when I read it. If it touched you so greatly surely you can type out three words.

It's up there with phrases like

"Heavens gained a new angel hun"

"Sleep tight in heaven my angel"

Anything with Hun, bbe, r u ok, etc.

I hate it. I feel people post things more for because they have to rather than want to.
