"I'm being interviewed for a new job this week, that's up in Edinburgh. The only downside is that I'd be there all the working week, separating me from my sprogs. I'm currently able to work mostly from home and a couple of days in Cardiff at the moment, which is a very good arrangement, for my family and relations with my ex Has anyone else worked such a period of time away from home and how have you coped ? " Worked almost 30 years offshore on oil rigs, 2 weeks away is utter hell and you start to loose touch with friends and drink buddies 3 weeks leave is good but most of North Sea is now changing to 3 on / 3 off Time away from home is not good for young families

" I don't have kids, but I have worked away from home many times (12 months in Kabul, 2 years in Islamabad for example). When I was married we would Skype at certain times (I guess facetime or similar is all good). I tried to make it home for important occasions, gave my niece a scrapbook set (I would send her bits and pieces of my travels and a I gave her a little photo printer so she could download pictures of things I had seen and add them to the book). Of course, when you are home, making the most of the time you have with the ones you have missed.

" The way I'd look at it is you have your fun during the week. Go out or plan meets and then just make your weekends about the kids as long as your ex isn't a bitch I'm sure she'd be happy to have plenty of free time to herself over the weekend.

"I would love to do something like that! I'm stuck in a office (never been in this environment before) and it's beginning to grate slightly. Always been travelling with my work. What's the job if you don't mind me asking" Can't say, can't tell
