I'm proud to say I'm now an organ donor something I'd never thought of before until a family member got ill.

I'm on the list and have also given blood since my 18th birthday.

My Uncle had 3 Kidney transplants in the space of 7 years and had it not been for organ donation he wouldn't have had those extra years with his family.

It's the same with blood too... At first, I really didn't want to go until dear mother said "you'd expect it there if you needed it", and although it was said to provoke guilt, it was perfectly true and i've stuck by it.

a Primark shoebox in Leicester

I have once or twice wondered why they are less fussy about organs than they are about blood.

I have registered for my body to be used for medical research and training at the University.

I've been an organ donor since leaving school, but I don't think they would accept blood or organs from me now.....still carry a card though and suppose I will still be on the register. They could have any part of me including my eyes.

Please clarify if this is before or after your untimely demise.

Is it true though that family can still say NO and have it stopped once your dead???

"Is it true though that family can still say NO and have it stopped once your dead??? "

No. If you've done all the right things and registered properly donation can legally go ahead against the wishes of next of kin. There are circustances where a harvesting team won't go ahead if n-o-k kick up a serious fuss.

That's why it's important to discuss your wishes with your family and secure their approval in advance.

Good for you

But it should not really take a family member or close friend becoming ill to decide to be an organ donor.

Me, I'm patiently waiting for my 3rd kidney transplant.

What you all really need is a living will,so your next of kin cannot object to your wishes of transplantation, i have a living will, but wont let them take my eyes ,when my 11yr old son died i said they have what they wanted except his eye's as they are the gate way to the soul.

near kings lynn

My mum in laws husband died suddenly and his eyes were perfect for transplant.

Now thanks to him and the choices his family made 2 people have some sight i believe.

Can understand how some people feel their eyes are them.

But it made such a difference to the recipitants.

They can have any part of me.
