mobile 'phone upfront cost

How soon does the upfront cost of a newly released contract mobile start to fall?

i.e. how long will it be before the price of a Galaxy S7 on one of the cheaper contracts starts to fall?

(This isn't specifically about me, I want an S7 and I'm out of contract but I've not asked my provider what they can do yet. I've been with them for 17 years so they usually offer me a good deal. I'm wondering how soon I'll have better offers to pressure them with if they don't offer me what I want).

I've only been with my provider for 7 years but it still helped me when I negotiated for no upfront costs with an iPhone 6 where it should have been £50. I know its not a lot in the great scheme of things but I just said I will look elsewhere if they couldn't accommodate me...

Don't knock it, a £50 discount is a £50 discount.

I found when I changed phones that as a rough guide they drop in price after 4-6 months after launch and then appear as a free option on the more expensive plans after 10-12 months but to be fair that was a couple of years ago so it might be different now

Depends. Usually, when the competition starts to catch up so its not quite so shiny and new.

Have you checked out Carphone Warehouse? My contract is with O2 but I got my S7 through them...cheaper tariff than O2, gave me £110 for my S5 (with a broken charging port) and massive discounts on accessories - around £35 for a wireless charging dock, tempered glass screen protector and shockproof case. They were really helpful

PS the S7 is awesome!

The S models seem to come out every year so prob about 9-10 months after launch to start clearing stock.

I'd expect sooner, once the flurry of initial demand has dropped, to try to get more people to buy/upgrade.

My tip, from some bitter experience, is to find the contract you want and then call your provider and tell them that you are leaving. They will generally better whatever is out there without you having the hassle of moving.

The deal I want probably isn't available yet though.

Although I will look around carefully and ask my provider what they can offer.

If it's not what I want, I'll wait a bit.

I'd wait til may time ish if can as the s7 just released and so a premium price. Usually go down in a month or two

Yeah don't go through upgrades, ring the cancellations number and they'll give you way better deals.

One of my colleagues who is a known haggler got me my s6 before Xmas on a 5gb tariff for £5 a month less than advertised, £20 cash back and no upfront costs (it should have been £50)

All because he said I was leaving for another network.
