Is this acceptable today?

Imagine the hell that would break loose if the brand was called "White Farmers"

.

its a fairly crap advert anyway, and I prefer Aberdeen Angus

.

but all the same, a poor choice for brand name

.

remember not so long ago;

Thousands of Zimbabwe's white farmers must decide by midnight tonight whether to fight President Robert Mugabe's government and risk jail or to flee lands they have farmed for generations

To be honest, there aren’t really many black farmers in the UK, so it is kind of his unique selling point. If you have an advantage in business, then you use it.

I can't for the life of me see the correlation between Zimbabwe and this guy trying to sell Sausages in the UK.

Don't get me wrong the situation in that country is bad but it's not down to the Black Farmer brand.

Zimbabwe is down to Mugabe - not a farmer over here. And i'm pretty sure there's a lot of history behind what's happening there now.

If they were actually branded "White Farmer" there would be riots in London & Birmingham, but heck its okay because he is black, he gets away with it

not much difference from MOBO awards

you will never see a MOWO award because that would be a scandal

Blacks are boycotting the Bafta awards as not enough blacks are winning

you need to look at a fuller picture and if it is unacceptable for one it should also fall in line of the other

It's his usp. He sells a good quality product and as it has been pointed out it is an unusual story. I would much prefer to purchase his products than some cheap nasty imported rubbish. I have no issues with him labelling his products black farmer, a large proportion of my family are farmers and if any of them called their produce white farmers sausage, it really wouldn't distinguish them from the countless other white Farmers produce.

What next? Change the name of reggae reggae sauce because Levi Roots never wrote the book?

Why is black regarded as pejorative, or white, or red, or yellow, or blue for that matter! I was and am anti apartheid in the 70's, 80's amd now. The freedom we demonstrated for, was not to pretend we were all the same colour, but to recognise we all had the same importance (for want of a better word!)

Marc and I were at breakfast in a B&B once and we were listening to the people at the table next to us complain about breakfast. They got to the sausage and then said "THAT is an expensive sausage." And suddenly it was the best breakfast they'd ever had.

It's an inside joke now. Instead of asking each other if breakfast is good we ask each other if the sausage is expensive

Wow, a black farmer calling his products Black Farmer's. I've not seen the sausages but I highly commend him for being open and honest.

However, I wouldn't link it to the situation with white Zimbabwean farmers at all. Some of my family were white Zimbabwean farmers forced out of their country through fear, totally different scenario.

I mis-read it - you mean it should have a warning on it? Well all sausages should, but aren't his gluten free and I imagine more pure ingredients than some. I think like anything - you take a view of a risk and sometimes it'll get you, whatever you do.

I'd still eat his sausages.

It's a cause close to my heart. I don't think it's ignored at all. There is an NHS screening programme for it as well.

We don't know what actually causes a lot of cancers - not fully. Yes we can minimise risk but sometimes - whatever you do , it might still happen.

Anyway , this is way off topic.

However, I wouldn't link it to the situation with white Zimbabwean farmers at all. Some of my family were white Zimbabwean farmers forced out of their country through fear, totally different scenario.

It's a cause close to my heart. I don't think it's ignored at all. There is an NHS screening programme for it as well.

We don't know what actually causes a lot of cancers - not fully. Yes we can minimise risk but sometimes - whatever you do , it might still happen.

"Is this acceptable today?

Imagine the hell that would break loose if the brand was called "White Farmers"

.

its a fairly crap advert anyway, and I prefer Aberdeen Angus

.

but all the same, a poor choice for brand name

.

remember not so long ago;

Thousands of Zimbabwe's white farmers must decide by midnight tonight whether to fight President Robert Mugabe's government and risk jail or to flee lands they have farmed for generations

"

What an outrage, how dare a black man use the title by which his neighbours have identified him by for so many years. We must stop this at once.

OP, would it be comfortable for you if the brand was a called 'Chalkie Farmer' or 'Midnight Farmer'?

It's only sausage

I saw he sells eggs too, organic chicken and cheese. Not just saussges. Plus his sausages are gluten free so suitable for those with chrohns disease and coeliac so it's a good product.

I'm all for buying his produce now. This thread has turned out to be a good advert for him.

you shouldn't link it to anything to do with south africa as he was born in Jamaica, raised in inner city Birmingham and now lives in Devon, as stated earlier...he has a great website

I shall giggle it, but South Africa does not have the same issues as Zimbabwe, just in the interest of clarity

Giggle?? I mean Google

Well considering he came as a child with his parents, I'd hazard a guess he didn't have a say in it.

I've never tried them - I've seen them but they seem a bit pricey. I don't reckon commercial pork really tastes massively different once you get up to a certain scale - When I had pigs, you could taste the difference, but that had more to do with diet, breed and the fact that I am fucking awesome at curing meat.

Yeah, its to do with the ammount of sawdust.

What I meant was, that there is probably a difference if you compare an outdoor pig to an indoor one, but to operate on any scale in the pig world, you pigs will mostly eat very similar pig nuts - my point being moe that the "black farmer" sausages would taste much like any outdoor reared pork sausage because the systems would be much the same.

Pigs kept in the way that only people operating in a small way - ie, outdoor, fed various (legal) things (we used to feed ours loads of veg trimings and windfall apples) are a completeley different thing.
