Hi all, anyone else into running I'm finding the hobby quite addictive. The training is hard but the rewards are worth it.

"Hi all, anyone else into running I'm finding the hobby quite addictive. The training is hard but the rewards are worth it."

I used to compete in cross country, half marathon, marathon and fell running.

I used to love training. A brisk 6 miles in the morning and night (and a 90 min or 2 hour session a couple of times a week) in boots wearing jumper lightweight cargo pants and skeleton webbing with about 40lbs of sand in the pouches on the road (used to take round 30 mins) and was a great way to clear head and relax at start and end of day and clock up 80 to 100 miles a week.

Then when I put on shorts and trainers for races running felt like I flying!

Knees pretty shot now but I am pushing 60.

I hate running. With a passion. But it's a necessary evil for OCRs.

Search out your local hash hound harriers club and join them. You may find that hashing will make your running more pleasurable at least once a week.

You were running 5 minute miles in boots and carrying 40lbs?

Yes times do seem a bit quick but I do hate and love the training side so worth it at the end of a race

"

"

Yep...

On the flat mind, not as good as you may think, but it did mean that I could manage the same sort of pace running up hills and through mud (never could sprint or had a kick mind).

I was rather fit. Maybe I should say that I was in the forces and when on exercise I regularly carried between 120 and 140 lbs on my back and could cover between 40 and 50 miles a day over parts of the West Highlands.

Google your local Park Run. A free timed 5k happens weekly.

There will be lots of local running clubs there, they'll be able to give you hints and tips.

But literally going out and running until I was bored was how I started!

Again look for your local HHH (google Hash Hound Harriers) . It is great fun and designed so that everyone starts and finishes at around the same time.

Someone (the hare) goes out and lays a trail with lots of false trails off the main trail. Then at the start time everyone else (the hounds) set off to follow the trail. Fast runners run further because they have to clear the false trails and find the main trail, slower runners don't cover the same distance and still get to be part of the whole thing.

The hashes I have been in always finished either at a pub or a members garden for a social drink and barbie sort of thing!

Give it a go, you have nothing to loose!

I've done 10k's and half marathons. No sense of achievement. Just a sense of 'oh yay, I can have pizza now.'

Used to train twice a day six days a week and had a half marathon pb of 68 mins. Unfortunately the knees can't take it anymore and for a few years I fell out of love with running but am back in training now albeit at a much slower pace. Great time to do most of my thinking did most of my degree work whilst running.

Not bad! I used to run that sort of time too. In my day (late 70's early80's) it would usually mean a top 50 finish with the odd top 20 dropped in when the real quick guys were elsewhere. Your sort of 20 years younger what was it like for you?

In that race I was 28th, but at the time I did not appreciate what I was doing now I look back with pride, it took a lot of hard work and effort.
