I'm due to have my mirena coil changed very soon and am feeling a bit nervous about it! I was told that I will have a local put in my cervix, then they will whip the old 1 out, give me an examination and take measurements, then the new 1 will be inserted! I know they are going to have problems because I push the speculum out when I have my smears done!!!

this is the 1st time I've had 1 taken out and was wondering if it will hurt or if I will be able to feel it coming out? Thanx in advance X

I had this but with no local. It was only slightly painful and uncomfortable for a few minutes was not really a problem at all.

Well your lucky you get a local i get nothing. Feels like a red hot poker seering through your stomach. But it lasts a couple of minutes and then total bliss again for the next five years

When I had mine taken out it was virtually painless and over in seconds. The procedure for putting the new one in will be the same as it was when you had it done before

Who told you that you would need a local?

I'd recommend some painkillers before hand for sure.

I didn't have anything as it was done last minute.

It was very uncomfortable putting it in.

I would try not to get yourself worked up about it, you'll only stress yourself out!

A local? That seems unusual. I went to have mine replaced a month ago....they dug around a bit but couldn't find the strings. This was no surprise as they couldn't find them when i went for my last smear test and ended up going for a Scan to check it was still there. Despite them having to search for the strings there was no pain. I'm going to the sexual health clinic in a couple of weeks see if they can remove it otherwise it will involve a Hospital appointment. You've had it put in. I can't imagine it being any worse....especially with a local? Really???

I had mine taken out twice and a new one replaced, both with a local. Taking it out was fine, putting it back in hurt in my stomach the second time but not for long x

You may feel discomfort, feel them poking about dependimg on if the strings easily found. Then stomach cramps for a short time but nothing unbearable.

The local only involves a squirt of Instilagel on the cervix,it's not an injection or anything like that.... Having it removed is fairly painless,having it put in depends on every individual... If your cervix is quite high up,then ask them to use a longer speculum as that would make it less painful,also if you've had children already it makes the insertion much easier. I would recommend taking something stronger than paracetamol,cocodamol works really well or ibuprofen lysine is great. Good luck,it's no big deal,just a little uncomfortable. Try to relax as much as you can,though I understand that it is easier said than done!!

When I had mine removed I wasn't given a local, she just found the strings and counted down and told me to cough, I did and she tugged.

Popped straight out, no pain just a little discomfort for a couple of hours.

But be warned if you aren't having it replaced there and then you can have horrendous bleeding 48 hours later, I mean flooding! They never warned me and it scared the shit out of me, a pad was sodden after 5-10 minutes

I told the nurse if she didn't take the bloody thing out there and then I would do it myself, and I meant every word.

Nasty thing, caused me health problems for years!

Apparently it's not supposed to hurt having it removed. Mine had moved and the pain was hideous as she had to yank it out.

I decided there & then not to replace it and opted for the mini pill instead.

Most people I know though OP have felt a slight discomfort. Take some ibuprofen a few hours beforehand.

Having my first one fitted was not pleasant but replacing it with the second was a breeze.

Take painkillers beforehand and good luck!

Have to say having mine fitted was the worst pain I've ever had (and I have some extensive tattooing so I'm not pain adverse)

They removed some ovarian cysts at the same time though so I have no idea which pain was that, and which was the fitting.

Just know having my cervix opened was excruciating

Had mine changed Wednesday...

Took painkillers an hour before (as advised) but in vain.... When she took it out there was some cramps in the stomach which was gone in like a minute... Hurt like hell though... She then used an anaesthetic gel, for what I don't know... Not like it helped...

When she inserted the new one oh my lord!! I actually screamed and cried; and the dr just goes 'it's okay to have a good cry'... Patronising much?

I was in pain for two days and had some cramping and stuff but it's all okay now..

I think the key is remember to breathe...

I passed out 10 mins after having mine inserted. The pain was unbearable I couldn't cope. I've only had it in 15 months and never experienced cramps and pains like it. I'm too scared to have it taken out tbh as the pain was too much!!

I had my last one for 5 years and I never had any issues... If u are experiencing problems just get it taken out.. The pain taking it out was horrible but over too quickly..

I've just relocated so now I'm settled I can get it sorted.. Rather go back to the injection every 3 months!!

Thanks... It's the hormonal one.. They suggested it as I'm on insulin as I'm diabetic. Not sure why as I was doing OK on the injection lol..

I've never heard of it being done with a local. I've had mine changed and it was fine. A bit uncomfortable but not painful. I have a low pain threshold so if I had no real pain then everyone should be fine. Unless of cause it is in at a strange angle then I imagine that may hurt a little

Good luck with it and try not to stress as it will be worse if you are all tense.

Thanks... It's the hormonal one.. They suggested it as I'm on insulin as I'm diabetic. Not sure why as I was doing OK on the injection lol..

I believe it is because the hormone levels in the body can affect your diabetes and other forms of contraception cause an increase in the hormone levels; where as a coil only releases the hormones where it is inserted rather than the whole body. I would probably consult your diabetes dr/nurse just to make sure.

Well I went today to have my coil removed and a new 1 put in. I had taken 2 co dydramol before hand. The removal didn't hurt at all, just felt like a tampon being pulled out! Had a local after which was a gel which was cold lol The insertion of the new 1 wasn't painful as such but felt like really bad period pain in my back and was a tad uncomfortable! Glad it's all over for another 5 years xx

I had to have mine inserted under sedation,apparently my uterus tilts backwards, but removal was painless,done in a couple of seconds by my GP

I was really nervous about it and was thinking that they wouldn't be able to take it out! Had all sorts running through my mind!! Lol sorry to hear you had to have yours taken out surgically that was my worst fear! The things us women have to go through!!! Xx

Never heard that and I've had 2 out... I just took a few painkillers and it was fine

I'm blessed with a weirdly placed cervix and had to have it removed at hospital

Nearly didn't manage it but after perseverance, they got it

I have it in a wee sample pot

Had my copper coil removed and replaced with mirena last week. I was offered an injection beforehand (YES, an injection in my uterus), but opted for the 'numbing cream'. It was painful this time around. Heavy cramping for two days with a bit of spotting. All is fine now though
