So this is my, Jez issue. We have a 2008 Peugeot 207 which was a great car till timing chain tensioner failed. Result needs a new set of valves and guides and a new timing chain kit. Average quote from garages is 1500 quid which we don't have. Now the car is on hp and my attitude is if we hand it back will we still end up paying for it. So my question is would you think sod it and attempt the engine strip down yourself.

Yes you can hire any special tools you need but before you go ahead get and read the manual and make sure you can do the job before you start.

I would have thought you could get an exchange re-con engine fitted for less than that.

Mate of mine had a re-con engine fitted in his transit, exchanging the old one. Cost him £300

This engine is in really short supply. Cheapest recon is 1350 plus vat.

If I was to do this myself I would take my time . We bought a cheap car to tide us over. So I don't have to rush the job.

Go to a scrap yard and get second hand bits! A complete head will cost a fraction of that price and fitting is relatively easy. Timing however is another matter. Once you have got the parts, look on a Facebook "spotted" or sales page for a mobile mechanic who would be prepared to fit it all for you.

Ours only has 78000 miles on it. Really disappointed in what is a bmw psa engine. Had previous Peugeot do 150000 miles with no issues.

Is it the THP150 or 175?

I had the S16, real head turner whenever it went. But had ridiculous problems, I bought it second hand and had it about 5 months. 1 of which it spent being repaired

Find a mechanic you like who swings, I'm sure with a bit of flirting you could get it done cheaper

try some smart car repair people, they usually do repair fairly cheap, i had quote from ford to replace a tiny 4-5" dashboard screen as went faulty after warranty ran out on car. quoted me £920 excluding vat. used a smart repair guy only £250. big difference

It's the THP 150. Tensioner failed with no warning.

Knock out the door lock and ignition barrel, tow it a few miles away dump it somewhere quiet, tell the insurance it was nicked

Depending on your mechanical knowledge, I'd say buy another engine from the scrappy and swap them yourself. You can hire an engine hoist and if you need tools, Halfords Professional are good for the home mechanic. As someone said buy the manual and read the different forums on the subject to gain tips.

As above. Its a big job and if your not mechanically minded you won't do it properly .. An engine swap is probably the easiest route.
