We live in an interesting time where men are increasingly obsessed and insecure about their bodies (increase in advertising directed at them?). Pecs and protein shakes everywhere.

I like a hot body to perv at but narcissists tend to be lazy lays (only from my experience and watching in clubs). Give me an average chap anyway.

Who gets your vote?

I prefer somewhere between ripped and average. And most of the guys we've met have been awesome.

I don't see how this is different from the slim vs. curvy threads. Surely it's the person and not their body that makes the sex good?

I like a range of male body types, height is my only deal breaker, and that's more about me than them.

As with the equivalent female body obsession, it's not really about what the opposite sex think most of the time.

Average to chunky (I love a little furry cake baby to stroke!) is my preference for my own private reasons, but as long as you are kind, respectful, don't smoke and want me I don't discriminate.

Hence why I'm asking all genders, not just women.

And of course preference is about the person, not about physicality. I don't mean to turn this into one of those hateful BBW v Skinny threads. Just curious.

Not the slim vs ripped bod bit, as I'm not into guys

But I do prefer someone who takes care of themselves

We equally live in a time where some fems and males consider looking after their bodies a non starter. Based on the above logic that must be because they're secure about their bodies ??

I suppose the OP reality is the difference between those who's focus is image, how they look in the eyes of others in contrast someone with a natural focus to keep fit, trim for something within themselves and no one else.

Meets we have had with ripped guys tend to be not as good as the average guy. So we now don't really message guys with the muscular body. We also like to go out drinking and socialising and for some reason guys that are ripped aren't really into that.

I know I am a skinny fella, and for a long time, I would never post pics of my body, just my wang.

But then I got to thinking, that I was setting myself up for a fall, in that by not showing a body pic straight off, the people that maybe wanted to meet me, weren't getting the full picture.

So now its face/body/wang in my photos and if someone messages me, I know that they might like what they see, nothing hidden. It made me more body confident and i get to meet people whose preferences I fit.

So regardless of size, I think its a confidence thing (with all things actually)

I like a variety of male body types but generally fit. The 6 pack is a hard one for guys to maintain, so I'm not expecting just those guys. ShagTonight has it all - what's not to love!

But I study with sports science guys and tons are insecure, packing muscle to cushion themselves.

I go for the good lover who is fit, rather than just a guy who's bulking but clueless in pleasing me.

Ok maybe I'm not making myself clear. I'm not attacking anyone who looks after themselves, good for then, groovy. Same for anyone who likes a cake, its all good.

Just questioning the recent increase of ripped culture, especially with men. Most lads played a bit of sport and kept fit when I were a lass. Now so many are obsessed with muscle definition and selfies. It's no bad thing, people can do whatever they want with their bodys, merely an observation and a straw poll

I do get what you mean - and I think it's a source of new competitiveness between men, which is sad. There was a thread a while back where a lad was asking opinions on his abs and a load of other guys (and a few women) jumped in telling him he was too skinny, should eat a burger, that abs on a thin guy "don't count" - and it was all about appearance rather than fitness. It's no wonder that more and more young men when subjected to that kind of chat feel like they have to get bigger, and have enormous pecs.

I think it's the generation we are now in. When I was a kid many cartoons like He-man and Thundercats had characters full of bulging muscles, WWF wrestling was popular and all the kids wanted to look like/be like the wrestlers (Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior). Maybe that had an effect on kids growing up in the 80s and 90s? Film stars like Arnold Swarzenegger and Jean Claude Van Damme were ripped and big. Now it's in mens advertising for aftershave and mens underwear. There seems to be media pressure saying this is how men should look.

Its not just the media though so many people on here go crazy for a six pack and pecs. It sends the message to guys that to get noticed you need the body. I'm still yet to see a thread started in honour of the nice guy with the average body where all the ladies line up and declare "but look at how kind he is..."

Personally I find guys who look like that to be selfish and self obsessed in my limited experience of meeting them. Not the kind of person I want to hang around with

Saw a post about Wentworth miller from prison break on Facebook the other day. The post had 2 pics of him, one from prison break where he was ripped and another where he had put on a bit of weight and was walking about town doing his own thing. The post was a response from him explaining how his depression led him to abuse himself via food rather than drugs etc but I actually thought he looked much better post prison break.

I started to lift weights when I was 18, my inspiration of it started as I was reading muscle mags and watching wrestling, ever since then its become my lifestyle and I enjoy every moment from first meal to last and all the meal prepping, my favourite quote is from jay cutler, to be a living legend you need to train like one

I believe that your body is a temple and you should look after it the best you can.

Everyone has their own thoughts and some people don't enjoy the gym.

Personality is what pulls me in the most when getting to know someone.

There was a fascinating documentary about this trend on BBC3 a while back presented by Tiger Drew-Honey.

I think it has elements in the erosion of traditional male domains and the shifting balance of economic power in society increasing womens independance from male support or approval. Men feel that their bodies are their only uniquely masculine attributes.

Some women seem to be enjoying their ability to treat men as sex objects and the swing scene is a perfect environment for that. the societal effects of this loss of of place for men is already showing in rising male suicide and violence against the person rates.

Fwiw if a guys 'ripped' or better lean, through doing some physical activity that's enjoyable n gets you out n about, climbing, run, cycle, not to the extremes some people like to portray themselves doing, that's great, its a by product of doing 'stuff',if its just to look good in a t shirt, two sizes too small, after repetitive lifting through same small range of movements, bit sad,but then the so called 'fitness' industry, gyms, shakes, other 'stuff'does have a big appeal, just look at number of u tube channels offering to show you quick fixes for pecs, abs, six packs......oh yeah n selling stuff

I love the look of a buff, ripped body and the sensation of tracing the ridges with tongue and finger tips. I'm very tactile, sexually. I also respect the effort they put in.

However, sexual attraction for me is about the person and whether we can 'connect' with me and they can engage my mind. If they can't, (or can't be bothered to try because they think their looks trump everything else), even if they look like a chiselled Adonis, I won't be interested.

I get (when my filters are open) a lot of messages from men with really awesome bodies but they're often unappealing, (crass, monosyllabic, text speak, full of cock pics etc), and the body, for me, doesn't make up for that.

Now, obviously, I also get a lot of unappealing messages from average men too. I'm not saying crap messages are limited to buff men!

Ultimately, if someone clicks with me on a mental level then it doesn't matter whether they are ripped, average or slim. The attraction is the mental aspect and a scorching body is just a nice to have.

I'm turned off by fat men though. I'm told that makes me a hypocrite but I'm attracted to what I'm attracted to. I don't like my fat, (and yes, I am doing something about it but it's going to be a long journey), so why would I like anyone else's fat?

On the subject of "looking after oneself", I know often it's a euphemism for not being fat. People feel more comfortable saying they want someone who looks after themselves than saying they don't want to meet overweight people.

Even so, as an overweight person, I do still look after myself. I'm healthy, I'm well groomed, I'm clean and I make an effort for meets. I'm just fat. That doesn't mean I am happy being fat, lazy, slovenly or can't be bothered how I look.

"Fwiw if a guys 'ripped' or better lean, through doing some physical activity that's enjoyable n gets you out n about, climbing, run, cycle, not to the extremes some people like to portray themselves doing, that's great, its a by product of doing 'stuff',if its just to look good in a t shirt, two sizes too small, after repetitive lifting through same small range of movements, bit sad,but then the so called 'fitness' industry, gyms, shakes, other 'stuff'does have a big appeal, just look at number of u tube channels offering to show you quick fixes for pecs, abs, six packs......oh yeah n selling stuff "

Why is it sad for someone to want to look good?

Whatever its for it takes hard work and dedication. Not sure how you can say fit is only ok if its by accident?

I don't see how this is different from the slim vs. curvy threads. Surely it's the person and not their body that makes the sex good?"

I agree, it is the person in side the body that makes it good, you can have a hot bod but if you don't know how to use it what's the point !!

"Its not just the media though so many people on here go crazy for a six pack and pecs.

Not the kind of person I want to hang around with"

It's often difficult to get to know anyone's personality via a site like this though, which leaves us relying on looks to a great extent.

There are some people on the fora that I find attractive for their personalities though, regardless of their body.

I'm probably going to embarrass him now, (sorry), but as an example, Howard is a genuinely lovely bloke and I would meet him because of that, without his build coming into the decision. He's a really nice guy.

I don't mind admitting that I don't have a great body at all. Given that more guys generally tend to look after themselves these days I do get a little paranoid about it.

I'm far too lazy too do anything about though and and it doesn't bother me enough to make me do it just to look better.

"We live in an interesting time where men are increasingly obsessed and insecure about their bodies

(quickly regrets thread)

I do get what you mean - and I think it's a source of new competitiveness between men, which is sad. There was a thread a while back where a lad was asking opinions on his abs and a load of other guys (and a few women) jumped in telling him he was too skinny, should eat a burger, that abs on a thin guy "don't count" - and it was all about appearance rather than fitness. It's no wonder that more and more young men when subjected to that kind of chat feel like they have to get bigger, and have enormous pecs. "

I remember that thread. It made me feel really sad.

It used to be boobs on a fat woman don't count but now there's a body shaming equivalent for men too

In this aspect, we are moving towards equality but we're doing it in absolutely the wrong way.

I'm a skinny guy and I'm constantly told that I need to eat more (although I probably eat more than the people saying this) or need to go to the gym when in reality I'm happy the way I am. Society seems to have a problem with the way I look yet I personally love the fact that I can eat whatever I like and not put weight on. I'm sure one day it will catch up to me and then maybe I will go to a gym but right now I feel fine! I don't feel the need or want to look like every other guy however it can be a littl discouraging reading profiles on here or wherever of women looking for the "muscley guy with tattoos" You never seem to find a profile with women looking for men of my body type.

100% with you on this.

Just because I'm a big girl doesn't automatically mean I'm attracted to big men!

I like who I like and it the face that's the main attraction for me..Although I prefer guys not to be too skinny as that just makes me feel bigger! I like a beefy man to make me feel petite ( ).

Central

We are forecast to be the most obese nation in Europe in a few years. Although I sense that fairly overweight is already our average body type here.

Maybe our body descriptions should be recast, such as

Thin defined, slim defined, height weight proportional, some padding, curvy, very muscular/ripped, fabulous or something that describes more than relates to some mean average etc.

I don't have the "average" figure

however I have no heart disease / diabetes etc and

I lift serious weights for fun...

So people can look after their body shape and health no matter what they look like.

It does not mean they "love themselves" they just might like being strong, lean, healthy or yes look and feel in peak condition.....they are to be encouraged ...

AND those that don't workout are just as valid as they are chunky and delicious - solid and I adore feeling their cuddly fur and soft bits ...

Some men - both types - can be adorable

I go for all sorts of blokes (and girls). Only one of them is especially into going to the gym and is what I would call ripped. Average, podgy, skinny, ripped etc. has never made any difference to me in terms of attraction; I liked them all as people and therefore found them all attractive. It sounds like the world's biggest fence sitting answer but it happens to be true.

Is body size indicative of whether you will have good sex? If it is then it probably means that your psychology is designed that way.

For others it's the mental connection that improves the intensity of a meeting.

If the two don't meet correctly; sex may well be meh. One partner feels physically inferior, the other mentally inferior, so saying someone is lazy because of x-type, is also the same as, I felt inferior or I just didn't do it for them/they disn't do it for me. We didn't connect. When both sides are in tune seldom is one side lazy....(please note that size is not indicative of intelligence, but it is indicative of lifestyle, interests and psychology).

Erm ? They have all been done that was my point and all rightly treated with disdain and contempt just as the premise behind this or should be and is be

And the

Well I fucked a ripped guy and he was shit so the op is right argument is rather foolish

If a person looks at a man's physique and profess to be able judge his personality and sexual prowess , I'd suggest they are simplistic in reasoning and have a mind set comparable to any race or sexist

That said of course all girls who wear short skirts and loads of make up , must be gagging for sex with anyone

"There was a fascinating documentary about this trend on BBC3 a while back presented by Tiger Drew-Honey.

"

My ideal shape that I'm after is stocky, relatively lean but not ripped.

I used to gym for cardio benefit, but have never sculpted, and never felt the need to.

I appreciate channing tatum and the likes are usually going to be the head turners, but I prefer the supporting actor role - in the background!

Just like the gym goers have spent time and money getting their bodies and so would like to maintain it, I too have spent time and money on mine... just in a more abusive manner!

Or to answer more succinctly, I have never felt pressure to be ripped!

We didn't connect. When both sides are in tune seldom is one side lazy....(please note that size is not indicative of intelligence, but it is indicative of lifestyle, interests and psychology).

Body type makes no difference to me . I'm attracted to different people for different reasons!

Connection, chemistry, character is a biggy for me. Somebody who is beautiful on the outside can fast become unattractive if not beautiful on the inside!

Admittedly I'm a sucker for a cheeky chappy with mischievous eyes ,a big smile & a black/caustic sense of humour !

"Its not just the media though so many people on here go crazy for a six pack and pecs.

He's a really nice guy."

Exactly this!

We live in an age of InstaBook and FaceGram where everybody is constantly visible and on display. It's Inevitable that both sexes are put under pressure to look good and "keep up with the Jones's" lifestyle wise. It's this constant broadcasting which emphasise looking like one is having a good/successful time fuelling a materialistic and body image culture.

A very interesting topic but I think a little narcissistic albeit unintentionally from the op.

Most peoples insecurities start from the minute they roll out of bed and places like fab put us under a super charged microscope. If another person was never to see me naked it wouldn't bother me in the slightest because I am happy in myself and that does not depend on my body shape.

My reason for staying fit are to stave off the dark clouds "depression". Works for me .

Its human nature to be attracted to the stronger fitter member of the opposite sex...or same sex. Me personally as a preference I just want them to be healthy and healthy isn't carrying an extra 15kg but drinking diet . To keep it on topic if I had to chose I prefer fit but not ripped and apologies to the OP for my opening line. It wasn't meant quiet how it sounds

Slim does not necessarily equate to healthy and overweight does not necessarily mean unhealthy.

I'm 5st overweight and physically very healthy.

Oh and I drink Pepsi Max. The cherry flavoured one if I can get it.

All this "I prefer someone healthy" when really they mean "I don't want someone fat" is bullshit.

Practicing doctor Mark Hyman wrote this in an article back in 2012:

"The common wisdom is that if you are overweight you are unhealthy, and if you are thin, you are healthy. But new research points to just how dangerous being skinny can be — if you are a “skinny fat” person, that is.

The medical term for this is “MONW,” or metabolically obese normal weight, which I prefer to refer to as being a skinny fat person. It means you are under lean but over fat — not enough muscle and too much fat (especially belly fat). It seems it is better to be fat and fit than thin and out of shape."

And yet still we hear, "I want someone healthy and healthy means not carrying excess weight", which is not necessarily true.

If you prefer slim, at least be honest about it. Don't hide behind nonsense about health.

Not everyone with a "ripped" physique is a narcissist. I've trained all my life and love the healthy lifestyle. Living this way has helped me attain a decent physique, but hopefully my modesty and mind are as much a turn on as my body.

I like clever, funny and twinkly eyed people... their outer shell is just that. There has to be an attraction but it comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes. We, as a society, appear to be obsessed with too thin/too fat/too tall/too small and quite frankly I'm more obsessed with people who are decent and kind, have a brain and a sense of humour.

I'd never look for average just as I'd never describe myself as average. There's not a 'one size fits all' there's just a spark and I know it when I see it. I can list my preferences but there is no type, there are just people.

What about a guy who is a little cubby but gyms 4 times a week, plays squash twice a week and doesn't eat carbs. No because I am insecure but because modern life is very bad for our Health and I don't want to die of a wasting condition before I'm 50. Also training for tough mudder this year too.

"We live in an interesting time where men are increasingly obsessed and insecure about their bodies

(quickly regrets thread)"

Don't regret it , it's a valid question and you shouldn't be made to feel bad about your curiosity , it might have come across as a slight generalisation , but this is a place we can all grow and learn about each other and what better way then putting questions out there .

I'm a narcissist and I'm not a lazy lay. I like guys to not wank for at least 3 days before a meet because I like him to blow his beans really quickly. I like guys to cum and cum and then cum again from their reserve tank after some prostate massage.

I've always always been into fitness and looked after myself. I go to the gym ALOT and whilst I'm not overly strict with my diet, I do eat a very healthy diet, including supplements etc.

I'm naturally drawn and attracted to others who are similar to me in relation to fitness, keeping fit, healthy lifestyle, non smokers etc and every single "ripped" person I've slept with has been far from lazy or not good.

I'll often admire a ripped & defined body from afar and think pwoar!

But in general, I prefer the average but in shape male body to get jiggy with.

Ive met a couple of really gym fit guys and they were lovely and the sex was great. However I just felt a bit too aware of my wobbly bits next to their solid ones.

This....I live in the gym and eat what I eat because I love the lifestyle, not because I have to or not because I'm unhappy with my body.

I've never been big by any stretch of the imagination....why I'm so into the healthy lifestyle is difficult to explain, I can't describe the buzz I get from the gym, I love seeing my body change and surely the best investment you can make is in yourself.

If this means some people won't be attracted to me because I'm too "gym fit" then fair enough
