Looking for a little advice, considering getting a tattoo for my shoulder, chest and upper arm.

What should I look for in the 'parlour' and is there an average cost?

ask the artist to see his work / portfolio.

Look around in the parlour to make sure it's not just clean but hygienic.

a good artist does a lot of free hand work.

Price doesn't determine if it's a good place or not imo ... Altho I would be a little alarmed if somebody offered a full sleeve for £200.

There again if you have something in mind they come to a 1 off fee

Or charge by hour absolute minimum of £40ph. Anything less and I'd be worried.

Don't go off the reputation of the parlour go off the reputation and portfolio of the individual artist. Decide what you want before going and make sure your happy when they pen it on, remember it's there for life x

I go off the quality of someone else's tattoo!! If I get talking to someone and I love the style/quality of their tattoo, I always ask which artist did it for them. Portfolios of artwork only really show that they can use a pencil....no proof that they can hold a tattoo gun lol! I also dont judge parlours on their fresh tattoo pics, as most tattoos look great to start with , I want to know that mine will last, that the ink wont bleed or fade etc due to an unskilled artist.

Definitely take other peoples recommendations into consideration, but then use the above to judge for yourself. Just like any other artists, tattooists all have their own unique style - some you'll like, some you wont.

Agree with the above - £40 an hour minimum!

Don't do it, its more cool to be without; far too many people getting tattoo's today, people are better recognised for being without
