Woe is me.

Admittedly a bit of a woe is me thread. I recently gave up my full time job to become a full time nursing student. I've found a part time care job that I can do, so I'm able to get a bit of money along side.

But I have a gap between pay checks of nearly two months!

My frustration is just lack of help whatsoever from authorities etc to accommodate people in similar situations.

It's totally backwards that someone who chooses not to work has a nice little weekly wage come to them.

Before I'm attacked about this- I understand that not everyone reviewing JSA chooses not to work, but are honest people seeking employment.

I'm guessing it's because you gave up work to study. Is that why you don't qualify for any help?

That sounds tough. Could you not have planned it a bit better so that you weren't without money for that short time?

Good luck with the nursing

Yeah,

I'm in full time education so I won't qualify for anything.

And because I'm doing an NHS funded course - I can't apply for a student finance maintenance loan. I've had to rely solely on an NHS means tested bursary which works out to be £250 a month.

Due to the payment schedule they double paid us in feb, and I won't have another payment until the third week in April.

Argh.

Do you not get a bursary as a student nurse? Also,if you knew you were going to make this change did you not make provisions?

I replied earlier about having a bursary which is about 250/month.

I made the change fairly quick due to the course starting in Feb of this year.

Yes I could have waited another year to save money, in an ideal world but when is there ever a perfect time to do things.

East Sussex

Is there a student nurse welfare officer or similar? I only have experience of government funded education but might there be an equivalent set up with a student services provision?

They certainly do!

And from 2017 they are cutting all funding for nursing. Including payment of tuition fees.

So people will have to have studied loans to train to be a nurse. Approx 9k a year (Just for tuition alone)

Along side working placements (37.5hrs a week)

We will essentially be paying to work a full time job!

Can you do bank work or is that only allowed after year 1 on the course? I had a place for nursing and ended up having to withdraw before I started due to illness. I knew it would be a struggle financially so good luck to you!

Signed up to NHS professionals (the bank agency)

Back in february... They are still 'processing my application'

Hence why I went and found myself another care job.

"Why do you want to be a nurse ?"

I can't imagine doing anything other than care or nursing or medicine.

One of the most versatile careers, you can teach, research, be a surgical nurse, a medical nurse, work in the community, anywhere.

And the world will always need nurses.

Did you know the bursary was paying out double when they did it?

Also, December to February is probably enough time to save something.

Could you not get a job in a pub or something that pays weekly to tide you over? Or something you can do from home?
