There has been a smell in my room that has been getting worse for two days, my landlady came up to smell it and agreed it smells like something has died under the floorboards or could be electrical.

Either way it fucking stinks and I am honestly thinking of kipping in my car tonight and I've gone right off fish!!

That is all lol

If it's a fishy smell it could be wiring that's arking. It needs checking out asap.

She's going to get her electrician friend to have a look tomorrow. As soon as I told her she was up there taking floorboards up and checking the loft for anything

"I hate to be the one to cause worry, but I overloaded a couple plug sockets as a teenager, it smelled Luke fish as it melted "

Yeah that's what I thought, I remember a few years ago there was a similar smell at my exes and it was a wire. I only have two plug sockets in my room, one with my phone charger (over the other side of the room from the smell) and the other other is a extension lead with my tv, hairdryer and lamp. Thinking of unplugging the lot.

The smell is right where the fuse box is (in my room) so I'm guessing it's electrical. I'm not here after tonight for a few days so she can sort it while I'm gone

Turn the light off and open a window, give it some time and see if it goes

"Why does arching electricity smell like fish I wonder ? "

It's melting insulation, plugs especially, that have the fishy smell. Not so much the arcing, which smells like ozone (because that's what's being created). Something is shorting out to earth, or too much power is being drawn through a plug or cable, or both.

The RCD on the consumer unit should trip. If it really is a fuse box and not a consumer unit, then it's decades overdue for replacement.

I'd seriously kill the power to the fusebox/consumer unit right now, as in right now. There's a very real danger of a fire starting.

She's turned off everything that is not needed for tonight, she also agreed it's electrical, the smell doesn't seem half as bad since then but I have to admit I'm a bit scared to sleep now!!

She needs to turn power off to the consumer unit/fuse box immediately and not switch it back on until cleared to do so by an electrician.

I don't mean to be a scaremonger, but I'd not sleep in that building until the wiring has been passed as safe by a qualified electrician.

White plastic light fittings can give off a nasty ammonia / fish type smell when they get old. Turn the light on for a while and get close to it for a sniff test.

Sounds like she is the Electrician if she replaced the light fitting last week!.... Insist on qualified Electrician to attend amigo and isolate meanwhile.

an RCD detects earth fault currents. no earth fault current = no RCD trip. without looking at the equipment how can you advise wether it is in need of replacement?

granted it's a good idea for a periodic to be done on the equipment and also to turn the supply off at the board just to be safe but it's also best not to give technical advise unless you have a full understanding of electrical theory.

I have a degree in electronics - basic ac and dc electrics is Janet and John stuff for me.

You agree then with my advice (not advise, that's the verb) about isolating the power then?

So what issue do you have with my suggesting that if it really is a fuse box, rather than a consumer unit, it should be replaced? Fuse boxes are no longer used, certainly in domestic electrical installations. Whilst no, I'm not a certified domestic electrician, so not up on the regs, I'm sure it is illegal to install one these days and the advice (there's that noun form of the word again) is that they should be replaced with a consumer unit

no need to reort to being a grammar nazi over a couple of typos. i was just correcting the bits that weren't quite right (your confusion between different kinds of circuit protection). and to correct you further, while metal consumer units are now a legal requirement on new installations, as long as equipment was fitted to the regs current to the time of installation there is no legal requirement to updrade. a good example is when we moved into this house the wiring was installed to 10th edition (1934) with a d type rcd retro fitted. i tested the TT system and there was no problem so it stayed like that till i re-wired a year later.

I'm sure you're a very competent electrician.

So what exactly are you correcting this time?

I said I thought it was a legal requirement to use a consumer unit nowadays -which you have confirmed, thank you.

I said I thought the current (sic) best advice is to replace a "fuse box" with a consumer unit, which I understand is the case, but I never said it was a legal requirement. As I understand you, you are saying that so long as a "fuse box" was installed to a particular standard and is appropriately protected, and tested, that it is legal to use. I'm sure you're right and I never said otherwise.

Maybe it's just a phase you're going through
