¿Una buena pregunta?

Does anyone use a particular language when they're abroad, or do they rely on people speaking English.

I lived and worked in Mallorca for 3 years and learnt the basics before I went.. Just so I could get by ordering food and drink etc .. But even tho the office where I worked was full of Spanish speaking people they were more interested in brushing up on their English than helping me with my Spanish

I can understand more than I speak

I picked up a little Dutch in Belgium, though found it easier to read than speak. Picked up quite a bit of Spanish when I was in the Canary Islands and know enough German to get by when over there.

If I speak the language, I will use it. ¿Qué tipo de pregunta es?

I always try and learn some of the language in every country I visit, even if it's just a few phrases.

I studied Physics in French, but that was actually fairly easy as the language of Physics is Mathematics.

I can get by in Spanish.

I tend to speak a limited mixture of French, Spanish and German.

All at the same time, whichever country I am in!

Except this one of course.

Very minimal basic, Mandarin, Spanish and German.

Fairly decent but also basic, French.

Nothing to shout about though, so completely rely on them speaking English.

I try to make the effort a learn a few phrases at least.

In Berlin in Feb., a couple of times I asked for things in shops in German and was surprised to be returned with:

"I do not understand your question, please ask again."

Cheeky fuckers.

I was once so smashed in Amsterdam that I started to ask for everything in French.

The barmaid said my French was slightly better than my English which confused matters even further.

LOL

I love the Dutch.

You ask, "Do you speak English?"

And they say, "A little bit."

And what they really mean is; A little bit better than you.

I can order beer, coffee, and a bed in all European languages, do a small amount of conversation in Spanish, but tend to need to listen to it for a few days to pick it up again.

There used to be a restaurant in Derby called Outer Mongolia and my mate took great delight in ordering everything in Mandarin which confused the fuck out of the waitress

I always try wherever I am to pick up a few lines. I still have some residual knowledge of French and German from school days, but Spanish is almost alien to me.

If all else fails, I use the language of love

The best way to communicate with foreigners is to SHOUT as though they are deaf retards. A bizarre accent will also help.

I speak a bit of Welsh

Schoolboy French and Spanish help me through, and I've picked up a bit of the other Latin languages.

I think it's only polite to try and soak a bit of the language, whatever you go

I did 6 years of Latin at school from aged 7-13 and a lot of our words are derived from that particular language.
