I've been chatting to someone and it was all going well. Moved it to kik and his profile pic was of Enoch Powell. Kik shows his full name so went on Facebook (as you do) and it was so racist!! Have politely explained I find his political view off putting and won't be taking it further. Took me very much by surprise. Anyone else declined a meet due to similar situation??

Champion of the poor, champion of ethnic minorities, makes a speech in parliament that they all strongly disagree with, rendering him the poster boy for racism. All previous accomplishments forgotten and will only ever be remebered for a that speech, bit sad really.

just look him up hs passed 2 greek exams in record time spoke urdu, enlisted in the army obtained a high rank at early age, people should look at his background then judge him, he was remembered for his speech in 1968 but majority 74% backed him, he was a very clever man

Couple of years back I spent 3 months chasing a (cute) ginger Frenchman down to a rematch.

We met for a second time just after he'd finished work. He'd clearly had a bad day but embarked on a right-wing tirade for nearly an hour.

I was like, uh, can you please close your mouth a little... you're ruining this.

:/

He also campaigned on the same side as Tony Benn and Michael Foot to get Britain out of the common market in the 1970's. Resigned from the Tory party and told people to vote Labour in order to get a referendum on our membership as the people were never asked. It worked, Labour got in and we had a referendum, even though he ended up on the losing side of the referendum. Tony Benn would not say a bad word about him when he passed away, he sacrificed his career for democracy.

He was no racist, just a wise realist who had the courage to say how it was.

I find Enoch Powell's views repugnant and would have voided a meet, too.

I've certainly learned more about Enoch Powell than I knew before... Regardless of his particular history, the views on Facebook were far too right wing for my tastes!

Everyone always "knows" about that "rivers of blood" speech from Enoch Powell - not realising that he was actually quoting one of his constituent's letters to him.

He was actually trying to make the point that feelings and attitudes were getting dangerously out of hand and endangering the social structure from all sides.

He also had the finest command of written and spoken English that I have ever heard.

Yes, he had his faults, but he was not the evil racist that he's often made out to be...

And yes, it's disgusting for anyone here, or on Faceache, or anywhere, to hold those views - so avoid!!!

He supported grants to resettle immigrants from whence they'd come.

But I don't know of him to have advocated bringing British emigrants or their descendants back to the UK.

I'd love to know if he did though.

There's an awful lot of revisionist history going on here.

Powell held some repugnant views on the difference between the races (and religions - note his speeches against Roman Catholicism), that were not just the product of one outlier that was misrepresented.

What next, Adolph was an animal lover who was kind to little girls?

I'd have done the same thing. I don't tolerate racists and if I found someone held those views there is no way I'd meet them.

We once went to a couple's house for a private meet. We had evidently been speaking to the female in the build up, who seemed really nice. Once we arrived and during the small talk he launched, without provocation, into a racist diatribe.

After exchanging some choice words we made our excuses and left and are much more careful over who we meet privately now. The worst night we've had in our swinging journey by far.

(M) replying - Wish British people would get a "real" life... Go abroad and see what the world is in real terms

Sorry, I am as British as it can go (Scottish family roots with recorded family tree back to 842...)

But I speak 5 languages fluent and the reason! We moved in 1970 under Labours Mr Wilson, who destroyed the wool industry to a country of which all think it's a land of mountains, chocolate and happy rich people.

You think that Mr Powell was racist !

Then live there, learn to speak their dialects as these change every 20miles or in every valley... As a kid I was beaten up because I could not speak their language..

3rd generation Italians/Serbs/Spanish are "removed" from the country because of small crime ...

foreign speakers are avoided and the press is anti everything foreign.

Where even the insurance companies state very clear, that "if you are not a citizen we will charge £300 plus depending: if you are Italian, American, Serb whatever"...

Racist is where police will lock you up for nothing, but just because you are not a citizen of the country.

Racist is where police can beat up an innocent man in the middle of town just because he has a different colour.

Racist is where because you do not speak the local language you are spat on, beat up and mistreated.

Now you will say that is not possible in Europe, but believe me it is a daily situation in this country and the rest of Europe.

Where people are allowed to use a very specific salute and are not prosecuted by the authoritiesas they specify that this salute is not racist.

When you find researching your family tree that relatives of yours "vanished" in the camps around Munich, just because they were members of the Socialist Party or that your Grandfather was on the list for a camp.

That just because he hated members of Nationalsozialistische Partei and was a member of the Free Liberal party.

That Fabbers is what Racism is - Nothing else. What happens in the UK is "kindergarten" and we should be all more worried about the divide lines been drawn up between the various beliefs.

I'd say anyone who describes black children as 'grinning picaninnies' certainly had some racist tendencies.

I saw him once in the seventies. He was on the London to Glasgow train, sitting in first class reading a book.

It was quite amusing as people kept going up to look at him.

No idea where he was going. Somewhere between London and Glasgow I'd guess

Out of interest - what was the reaction of the female to his outburst?

She looked embarrassed and did try to shut him up but didn't disagree or contradict. Worryingly, she said she was a teacher with a largely Asian class.
