"Had an Amega, Mega Drive and PS1-4, loving Fall Out 4 though my character gets more action than me!" Ah PS1 the console that killed Sega and should never have existed... (Sony tried to work on joint projects with Nintendo and Sega but got shafted by both before reluctantly creating their own!)

"At the moment, Minecraft is my 'zoning out' game. We have a nes, snes, n64, game cube and wii set up in the garage ![]() I emulate I've grown weary of games..I feel the magics lost a little..probably mainly due to the popularity of the other consoles/game types..that arent nintendo. I see most of the games just being clones of clones on ps4/xbox1.. Single player adventures are less catered for, and even then..half of them cant even compare to games such as zelda..even mario64 is still a gaming milestone...that's been attempted to copy and failed(even by ninty themselves ffs!) bringing me back to zelda..the new wii u one, just has something good looking about it...but the last few titles from zelda never captured me that much..I hope this will change that, and give me that feeling I got from a link to the past and ocarina of time(and a few of the handheld versions)

"I've played games most of my life, but I suppose I'd consider the 16bit era to be the pinnacle of gaming so far, the simple technology really pushed developers to use their imaginations, and much treasure was made as a result. Many 16bit era games still feel as fresh and fun as they did over 20 years ago, much 32bit stuff is nearly unplayable." Fair point but if you get a 32 bit remake it can be awesome, the game cube remake of resident evil is awesome...

"Ahh yes nintendo went with Phillips but never released n e thing Other then phillips cdi zelda which was crap.. Oh i got a cube also" they only licensed a game, for educational purposes..nintendo never liked the CD system..due to ease of piracy..and they did take a huge chunk of 3rd party companies monies in cartridge sales I think..

Love video games, fave console of all time I think has to be the SNES, Street fighter 2 and Mario Kart on it was ace. I'm on Xbox 360 now, thinking of upgrading to xbox one soon.

Are you sure you've played sonic 2? Mario was good on the NES but on 16 bits it was surpassed by sonic and Donkey Kong. In the 3D realm it made a come back though and I'd rate Mario64 over the 3D sonic games.

I think you should play some mario..make sure you complete them properly though...way more advanced than sonic...way more. Mario is alright but sonic has better graphics and sound. Donkey Kong is a stronger competitor really. Shining Force is also awesome... I think this is more about style over gameplay.. mario is a pixel perfect jumper, controls are so finely tuned.. its like saying tombraider has better control over mario64..they are worlds apart, with the latter being ultimately superior. Are you sure you've played sonic 2? Mario was good on the NES but on 16 bits it was surpassed by sonic and Donkey Kong. In the 3D realm it made a come back though and I'd rate Mario64 over the 3D sonic games. " super mario world on the snes,smb4...is heralded as the greatest 16bit platformer ever..and I bloody know why...its a brilliant game. It'll always blow any of the sonics out the water, and donkkeykong(which i prefer over sonic anyway), but as gameplay depth goes..you have to be inside the mario game to see how much more it offers..as..the rightly appointed ,king of the platformers.

Sounds self-appointed to me! Nintendo had ~90% of the 8-bit market and the megadrive sales were so so at its launch... what changed then? In a word: 'Sonic' Sega would just belong in the realms of interesting side products like the neo geo or jaguar if it wasn't for sonic. Mario was good but ultimately childish, repetitive and not very pretty, fast or particularly great music.

" I found the sonics nothing compared to mario I'm afraid...childish was often used to describe anything nintendo made.It was just ignorance that got worse..ignoring the fact there was deeper gameplay.I really dont see how sonic was less repetitive, because there is much more different styles of play within mario..plus its exploration aspect sets it apart. anyway...platform purists choose mario over sonic..its been the case for many years.

To me its like people arguing about the better of music bands..I have no interest in any music..growing up all I cared about was films and games.. the rivalry between sega and nintendo was always a passionate one.. and remember it has been for a long time that gaming has been a billion dollar industry- and now even greater, with a wider fanbase of ages, sexes all playing games.

The game I've been playing for the longest amount of time is World of Warcraft. But looking forward to Overwatch coming out next month, cant decide weather to get the xbox or pc version.

"Don't know how you can say sonic is better than Mario. Its format has barely changed since the first one and the poor reviews most of them receive just show how limited the format is. Basically running from one end to another. The music is a subjective thing. The mega drive may have been faster but the she's was more powerful and has a vastly superior sound chip. Mario has mainly evolved with the times and in some ways innovated the genre. Sega fucked themselves up by producing too many consoles in such a short space of time. Megadrive, mega cd, 32x, Saturn and dreamcast (btw dream cast wasn't hard to program for, it was windows based so actually a benefit at the time, just ridiculously easy to pirate games) " The first bit of that was silly, the second bit I agree with. Sega came out of nowhere in the 16-bit market, much like Sony did in the 32-bit one. Their early marketing basically involved putting 2 TV's next to each other with one playing mario and the other playing sonic. Overwhelmingly, people preferred the speed, sound and better graphics of sonic compared to watching a little fat man slowly waddle from one side of the screen to the other

"Let's be fair...... Charizard would fuck sonic and Mario right up. I started collecting old consoles, they're fun and it's nice to have a blast from the past. Snes was my favourite . But let's be honest they're a bit shit really." Hold your treasonous tongue! I'd take megadrive or a SNES over an Xbox anyday. Modern games are dumbed down, prioritise graphics over gameplay and you can't play online without some 12-year old nerd killing you because they play the game constantly while you work

"Oh pwned by a 12 year old ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fallout 4 is pretty shallow and add much as I hate to say it, a disappointing title. Go with the Witcher 3 (best game of the last 15 years IMO), Undertale, MSGV or The Last Of Us. Ori and the Blind Forest is a great single player platformer too. There are loads of great stories that never seem to grace the general population of gamers.

Sony f-ed both of them up in the 32-bit era but not many of the iconic games on this thread came from them - hence the difference between commercial and artistic quality

Mario has numerous classic tunes, I think most people would be hard pressed to remember many classic sonic tunes. Either way if your theory was right, the sales would reflect that. Sonic has never innovated, the mario games on the whole have progressed. Like I say it subjective which one you prefer but the sales alone have dwarfed that of sonic and the megadrive was hardly a failure

Megadrive, mega cd, 32x, Saturn and dreamcast (btw dream cast wasn't hard to program for, it was windows based so actually a benefit at the time, just ridiculously easy to pirate games) The first bit of that was silly, the second bit I agree with. Sega came out of nowhere in the 16-bit market, much like Sony did in the 32-bit one. Their early marketing basically involved putting 2 TV's next to each other with one playing mario and the other playing sonic. Overwhelmingly, people preferred the speed, sound and better graphics of sonic compared to watching a little fat man slowly waddle from one side of the screen to the other Super Mario World sold approximately 20 million units, Sonic The Hedgehog sold 15 million. Just saying. Lol Yes we've established that nintendo was more of a commercial success than sega, a lot of that is due to how useless sega's management was. Sony f-ed both of them up in the 32-bit era but not many of the iconic games on this thread came from them - hence the difference between commercial and artistic quality but you said "overwhelmingly" - which suggest that Sonic sold more and its not true. Either way, it'll be interesting to see what Nintendo do with the NX which is apparently meant to come out this year. My comment stands, Pepsi was preferred in the head to head 'Pepsi - challenge' over . Coke still sold more. The two aren't directly correlated. Total sales have more to do with distribution and the fact more people owned a SNES anyway. But put the two side by side and as the average gamer which one they'd rather play and it was sonic by a landslide. Some of that translates to them going out and buying a megadrive, some doesn't... So graphics make a better game? Why do you assume it was just the graphics people liked? Well you suggested the comparison. You're quite welcome to throw the music in too. Mario has numerous classic tunes, I think most people would be hard pressed to remember many classic sonic tunes. Either way if your theory was right, the sales would reflect that. Sonic has never innovated, the mario games on the whole have progressed. Like I say it subjective which one you prefer but the sales alone have dwarfed that of sonic and the megadrive was hardly a failure" Can't you distinguish artistic and commercial success? Are you honestly suggesting avatar was a good film just because a lot of people went to see it? (It's not a film, it's just like a really long game from the mega CD)

I personally think the love and the effort they put into making some of their games shows through, despite the restrictions. Mario has evolved and there are classic levels in a lot of them. I don't think sonic ever went anywhere other than a quick 5 minute blast to reach the end of a level. The mario soundtrack is a classic in some parts. "ok..my last foray into the mario vs sonic debate is lol: its slower paced, has more to do,explore, more replay value, as in the latter games(ie the fantastic suppermario world), going back to levels with new powerups etc. much like the vastly underrated metroid series(super metroid being a fave)- slow paced again..but actual game design, and not feeling so much on rails as sonic games... someone mentioned spectrum Chaos..loved that game! I suppose we should all think of the current consoles soon becoming 'retro' lol...soon its going to be augmented reality..I think it'd be amazing walking around a REAL derilict building or a spacecraft set, wearing something googleglass like, with your gun, and your zombies/aliens/soilders will displayed as if they are in that environment.. so in 5-10years time..I'll still say mario fucked sonic up the arse many times over ![]() You understand the occupational hazards of arse fucking an animal that has spikes on its back from behind? Besides, if mario fucked sonic then it was consentual sex anyway because lets face it, sonic could always run away from the little fat man. Face facts, the reason princess keeps getting kidnapped if that the koopa troopers all gang bang her and she loves it...

I liked alex kidd games over sonic, so I'm not just sega bashing.

In all seriousness, go to you tube and listen to: Sonic 2 - chemical plant Sonic 3 - ice cap zone Sonic 2 - metropolis zone Sonic & knuckles - flying battery zone Then tell me what Mario has that can compete with that? The only remotely listenable bit of mario is avicii's levels remix! music was never my interest, sound quality yes..megadrive could not compete.fact. ![]() I think you just have a fetish for plumbers to be honest. Let's put sonic to one side. Donkey Kong Country 1, 2 & 3 had better graphics, better soundtrack and all the depth and gameplay that mario ever had. So I'm not just nintendo bashing...

I played the first one all way through. Only played a demo of 2.

"Double dragon on the Sega Master system. ![]() YES! Head over Heels was bloody brilliant. Similar graphics(monochrome, 3rd person, quarter side on view), but Great Escape was good too. Just could never work out how to avoid the dogs when the alarm went off.
