I've noticed it a lot the last few days... why are people replying to posts by typing above the original text?

One person's bilge is another's beautifully administered blowjob.

Have you tried skimming, or scanning text? Makes it easier to follow/understand.

If you look out for the differentiated(on purpose)text(ie the bolder)it helps with understanding each posting.

Interesting is so subjective.

How about content over form anyway?

Or: how about just ignoring things we don't like and not making judgements about how 'interesting' other people are(or keeping such judgements in our heads)?

I certainly don't call people out on how stupid, rude, or deliberately attention seeking for the wrong reasons they are.

I prefer to try and make sincere comments which are meant to amuse/connect in a positive way.

Instead of sniping over things which may seem trite and banal(and coming across as banal/anal myself).

Ok that obviously touched a nerve. Wasn't meant to be personal.

But this contrived style of replying makes posts and threads incredibly hard to follow.

So yeah, I still think it's wank. Deem me banal if you wish. I've ignored it on other threads, except this one where it's the subject of the thread and therefore felt relevant

That's why I write work emails in polite language even though I'd like to tell them to get fucked. That's why if I want someone to be able to understand the note I've written, I'll write it legibly. It did. Sorry. - The OP brought it up on the terrorists thread, to which i was a contributor(and contributing in the upside down way).

She then started this thread about it after mentioning it on the other thread.

Therefore I feel that I am involved unfortunately.

And it's not contrived: that's subjective(based on your perception of why i do it'upside down'). I have been posting 'upside down' because it

a. seemed the natural way for me to do it.

b. I was unaware that there was a convention the other way.

c. that I'd be breaking etiquette and making such a massive social faux pas if o did so.

d. That it would upset people so much that they'd start a thread about it.

Another vote here for it being wank.

To me it looks like a good way to get people to ignore posts rather than a good way to be different and stand out.

It seems like a lot of effort to go to in order to be ignored.

I have to wonder at the motivation of anyone who intentionally, knowingly makes posts and threads difficult and/or uncomfortable for others to read, quote and comment upon.

I thought there was only one such person but it appears there's competition now.

It does make it more difficult to follow a thread though.

Since all quoted text is grey, without the convention of the new content being at the bottom, it's impossible to work out the order without tracing it right back to the start.

It's bad enough when people accidentally reply to a comment inside the quote tags.

Okay. Fair point. Not AS important though. To some anyway. It undoubtedly helps though, agreed.

I'll just hang myself off the nearest tree.

Thing which gets my goat: I understand people finding it confusing, bu it's not really a big thing for most people(I'd have got run out of town five weeks or so ago when i joined if it was upsetting so many people), and for those for whom it is, then all they had to do it send me a private message to explain how they found it difficult/what the convention was. Especially if they had been around for a while AND seen that i was relatively new.

But no.

They decided to start a thread exclusively about it instead.

Research suggests women who wear makeup are taken more seriously at work than those who do not. I don't think Ruby is saying it's right, or that she feels that way, just that it happens and she reacts accordingly.

I think unless you're following every post that someone is making or replying to on a thread, it is WAY more confusing, because you have to try to work out which are their posts within the quoted bit and work your way down to the bottom, then scroll back up to read the latest. I've only noticed it recently and it made me skim over the posts and not bother reading them because it seemed like too much effort. I go to the newest post in a thread, so I would rather quotes and replies ran chronologically down in the same fashion.

It also makes it a lot more difficult to trim quoted text down using a 'phone, (and that's difficult enough already), so you're not quoting a mile of text each time.

That's why I write work emails in polite language even though I'd like to tell them to get fucked. That's why if I want someone to be able to understand the note I've written, I'll write it legibly. Form is always important in written communication.

so if someone doesnt wear makeup their not to be taken seriously?

If they have a face full of spots, dark circles and look pasty and ill then yes, I'll probably be distracted from what they are saying to me.oh right so your talking about extremes

Yeah, that's what my face looked like when I woke up. "

oh right i thought you was talking about an average face without makeup i misunderstood

You see: these are reasonable, measured responses. Thank you.

Which are also genuinely helpful.

Instead of making snide comments which I obviously can't pretend don't affect me personally, or addressing me either head on, or via private messaging, to explain how me posting the wrong way around to convention had upset them/upset them so much they wanted to mock me(i'm sensitive, so shoot me!).

All you need is Love people.

Otherwise Instant Karma's gonna get you(or should).

"It did.

I have been posting 'upside down' because it

a. seemed the natural way for me to do it.

b. I was unaware that there was a convention the other way.

c. that I'd be breaking etiquette and making such a massive social faux pas if o did so.

d. That it would upset people so much that they'd start a thread about it."

Just to clarify...

A) in no way was my thread personal to you, I've noticed several others doing it this way and I've been away for a week so wondered if I'd missed an in joke.

B) I didn't want to hijack the other thread as was happening so I started a new one. The Lounge is generally for banal chatter hence its appropriate.

C) You've not committed any faux pas... knock yourself out posting the way you like to post, within the rules you can do what you like with your posting style.

D) I'm absolutely not upset about it. I'll forgive you that, you don't know me. Takes a shitload of shite to upset me. This doesn't mean you should try but I'm rarely offended. Mostly irreverent and curious which is why I asked.

It's just downright stupid to answer a quote that is below your answer.

People read your answer and they don't know what it's about.

DONT ANYONE TAKE IT PERSONALLY AND WHINGE

Cos it'll still be daft in my eyes.

Eh, doesn't bother me. I prefer things quoted in a consistent style because it's a tad less confusing, yeah. But since e-mails run newest on top to earliest at bottom I'm pretty used to reading things that way around, too.

I am too - but it works in that case because the newest email is always at the top, whereas here the newest post is at the bottom. And everyone's replies work that way in an email conversation, not just a few people's.

I just find it odd that someone would specifically go out of their way to move the cursor to the top to reply there, when it defaults to the bottom of the post.

Yeah, I get why it's easier to follow if it's at the bottom, I'm just saying it isn't something that has bothered me as I'm pretty used to reading things either way around.

Although I did get a nasty message about putting my name at the bottom of my posts so maybe I'm just sensative to the critique

It doesn't with mine.

Which is another reason I start from the top as it's easier to click at the top of the message box instead of scrolling down to the bottom.

As i said previously, I don't do it as an affectation.

Thanks for the considered input.

As you would have picked up if you had bothered to read practically any of my posts on this I don't do it on purpose.

Apart from on this specific post, of course.

Because someone was deliberately rude.

Petty of me, I know. But I don't respond well to such thinly veiled, aggressive, snide comments upon me(or anyone else who decides(HEAVENS above!)to quote 'upside down').

I might write 'wank'(so pithy), but at least my attitude isn't.

"Another vote here for it being wank.

I thought there was only one such person but it appears there's competition now."

My answer is fine. fair enough. That IS important to know.

As is a person's attitude to this knowledge: do they believe that appearance is important in order to be considered seriously, or that it's useful to know that some people find it important?

"Oh, and it's my view that if you want people to take your content seriously then form is important. That's why I put makeup on this morning. Form is always important in written communication.

so if someone doesnt wear makeup their not to be taken seriously?

Research suggests women who wear makeup are taken more seriously at work than those who do not. I don't think Ruby is saying it's right, or that she feels that way, just that it happens and she reacts accordingly."

Who was deliberately rude? Me? Because I suggested it was an affectation and something someone might do as a way to try make their posts look more interesting? I don't think that's rude, I think it's a perfectly reasonable suggestion, and one that I still think to be the case.

It wasn't aimed personally at you, I have no idea who you are or what any of your posts on other threads have been about.
