What are people's opinion on St George flag, union jack and bulldog/lion and other patriotic tattoos?

Personally I think it's very sexy when a man has a very British / English etc tattoo on his body. Even better if combined with the emblem of military unit be served in. I love a bit of patriotism on a Man

What are others thoughts? Sexy or intimidating or simply indifferent?

Well I think that's a bit unfair. I don't think anyone who is proud of their country has to be a Britain first supporter. That's ridiculous.

Quickly becoming apparent on here that they certainly give a certain impression of people.

Any perspective from any men or women who do have these tattoos?

The only bloke I know with this kind of tattoo is a bulldog owning, St George flag wearing, skinhead (well mostly no hair ).

He's also as nice a bloke as I've met and I've never heard anything racist said by him.

Wouldn't shag him though.

Yep, a Welsh dragon tatt would be as equally cringeworthy and a turn off too.

I do admit to being a bit stereotypical here and, of course, it doesn't mean that everyone with those kind of tatts is what I've just described above but it is probably how I would interpret them from a pic on fab alone.

I'm a hypocrite: I agree with you, that would be my stereotypical view too. Yet the only person I know with a Union Jack, navy and Royal Marines tattoo is my son-in-law who doesn't fit that mould at all.

I don't like any sort of patriotism.

We don't benefit from it at all. The rich and the politicians most likely benefit from the good people of Earth being divided and dumbed down. We are better as one planet and not as one planet divided.

Loving where your from is one thing but I think when it gets to the point of patriotism then it's for fools. What does your flag even mean? And usually people don't even know the history of their "saints" etc...

I really hate patriotism. It is there for the purpose of control. Divide and Conquer. We are divided by flags and conquered by lack of critical thinking.

I got a shitty Scotland flag tattoo a few years ago before I realized that being patriotic is a bad thing not a good thing. I'll be getting it covered up with something else....maybe Batman

I do think it's a shame that our flags have been tainted by the "Ing-ur-lund" brigade but sadly it is true.

Everyone I ever met with a "Patriotic"themed tattoo fulfilled every stereotype you might expect.

I know a lot of guys with military tats, mostly Paras and that I can understand as it generally done in the spirit brotherhood rather than patriotism.

For me, it's tribal all the way.

LoL! What a load of uninformed crap!

Just to be clear member of any armed force who has or would have their National Flag or cap badge tattooed on their body is an idiot!

In one single move they make sure that if ever caught behind enemy lines or if they fall into enemy hands their body identifies them and gives the enemy information that they are not obliged to reveal and at time directly ordered not to divulge. In fact in my day there were a number of units that having any tattoos was an automatic bar to entry and I would be surprised if that had changed.

Not something I'm into. I always think of it like sticking a logo on yourself. In the US lots of people put the flag all over the place, including tattoos, and it just makes me roll my eyes.

I have seven tattoos two of which are bulldogs , one wears a union flag waistcoat. I am far from being a thug. I had all of mine done as a young British Soldier. A career I left 20 years ago. I consider myself to be a true patriot even though i amay not fit the stereotypical physical appearance of one lol

Having said that id be unlikely to get an england flag on my body, maybe a union jack though

My OH has a patriotic bull dog tattoo, had his done when he was in the Army with with a group of other squaddies. He is a completely different person to who he was 20 years ago when it was done, so though he wouldn't have another similar tattoo he doesn't regret it did to the memories it holds.

I can see where people's opinions come from though, I have a similar dislike of tribal tattoos

Thus is pretty much like judging a book by its cover. It matters little if it's a British military tat/Welsh/Irish etc. It's a class thing and when we see that type of tattoo we assume the person is very laddish or lower class now that might not be the case but any Irish folk I know with the flag as a tat wouldn't get near me, simply because I have tattoos that I consider art and I look upon that particular type of tattoo as a bad choice.

We shouldn't judge a book by its cover but when it comes to tattoos it seems it's a pretty accurate bookmark

I've never owned a pair of Doc Martin boots and the only time I have had a skinhead was when John the barber cut my hair at Depot Lichfield back in 1984.

I also mentioned Welsh just incase you didn't notice for the simple reason that I didn't want to make this into a British V Iish thing. There are no hidden motives in my comments, if I don't like you I will tell you.

I also thought this was about tattoos and as the op liked British tats then that was her thing. The whole point of the forum is to gather differing opinions right ?. Might I ask what you think my motives are seeing as you felt you had to call me on it

It's almost worse here because we have moron using the tricolour and IRA symbols as a front for general moronic criminal behaviour. Something very fewell Irish support in this day and age. It sickens me to see my countries flag linked to conflict but again I find well worked original tattoos extremely hot on a guy or girl

I have a military tattoo, I lost my brother who was in the forces , its to respect him , yes I have memories to remember him by , but I'm also proud of him and others he stood along beside . funny you should say that. in greece in the 80's and 90's lots of members of the Ultras wore union jack patches as a far right symbol. not sure if that's still the case

As mentioned by several people here, the UJ id often brandished by a certain kind of person. Patriotism could shown more pleasantly by a St Georges Cross or a Red Rose. We have similar issues too with a certain class of 'people' who don Harp tattoos and Tricolour.

In fact, I've come to dislike the tricolour due to the naff and negative sentiments it now conveys.

This is quite a sad thread, its a shame that flags are seen as somewhat right-wing.

I was going to get a special tattoo that involved three flags, basically my geographical make up if you will.

A republic of Ireland flag, and a Trinidadian flag tied together with a union jack, that to me is me, both my parents flag, tied with the flag of the country I was born in.

Not one person I spoke to about it thought it was a good idea, especially my Irish friends and family, who thought that a republic flag tied to a union jack was offensive.

I do wish that we lived in a world where we could brandished what ever flag we wanted, without being seen as right wing dick heads, I'm about as far from being right wing as you can get, but I love my country, from the mountains of Scotland, to the valleys of Wales to the beaches if cornwall, and every bit of it in between, I love Ireland, and I love Trinidad, but I'm British born, and there fore British.

The reason that flags are treated with such contept, is the way they have been used over the years as symbols, by the far right, its my flag, and I would like it back.
