Should we try and teach foolish people?

Often a point of contention between me and j. If someone drives badly I am of the feeling to let them know. If someone is rude I point it out. If someone queues in a pub like it's a post office I stand at the bar (all be it I let them get served first normally) any point in my stubborness or are they beyond help?

Try not to be intolerant about it but yes, there's always room to improve on other people's ignorance.

The only ones who are truly foolish are those who think that they have nothing to learn....

Only if they seem open minded enough to learn and not just think their way is the only way, it's good to teach but not everyone is prepared to learn

Your examples do not suggest any great degree of "foolishness."

We can all learn. If you believe the words of business leaders, then a little foolishness is not a bad thing.

I think it's you that has a lot to learn.

Let's begin by wiping some of the superiority off your sleeve.

If I fell uncomfortable about someone's driving I tell them I don't feel safe and would rather enjoy the rare experience of being able to look around instead of making sure I didn't have an accident.

Usually works.

My Dad bless him used to say "any idiot can drive fast but to drive smoothly & safely takes more effort"

So I shouldn't point out dangerous actions of others and those that put others out? Surely if nobody tells you that you are wrong then you won't learn??

Not entirely sure why queuing at a bar is an inately dangerous action.

What do you think ? Are you qualified to ?

Take care of your own behaviour.

That's all it takes from everyone for the world to be a good place.

Criticism of a mans driving is like telling him he is a bad shag.

Proceed at your peril

But what happens if they're not in the wrong & it's your judgement that is actually incorrect?

Foolishness I can generally forgive and I hope others can forgive it in me on the occasions I undoubtedly display it.

Ignorance on the other hand, I really, really struggle to tolerate and feel almost compelled to act upon.

Yesterday's example was queueing in a very crowded KFC where people were struggling to find seats and it was too busy for the staff to spend time clearing tables.

I asked perhaps 4 or 5 separate groups of people if they would be good enough to clear their table imto the bin so that others might use the table after they got up to leave and left the table covered in trays and wrappers.

Every single group apologised and cleared their table, which in itself suggests to me they knew they were being ignorant and so had no retort.

we can all be foolish or unknowledgeable with some things, and be top of the game in other aspects in life,

one person may appear the fool in certain circumstances but also have a huge wealth of knowledge

never presume

I am an advanced motorist. I learned long ago that if a less experienced driver makes a poor judgement it is best to keep my distance and aim to keep the roads safe for myself and others. Sometimes they like to 'PARP' loudly. It's their lack of confidence, their fear and their lack of knowledge and courtesy that make them think they must 'defend their own honour'...... they will grow up eventually and teach by example and HOPEFULLY lose the need to appear arrogant , condescending and supersilious.

So your reaosn for leaving a table covered in your litter for other customers to clear up would be what? If not selfish and ignorant?

So do I. Literally. If I've unintentionally been ignorant or impolite I would much rather have someone mention so that a deserved apology can be given and appreciated than have them think I'm an ignorant twat.

You can do what you want but be prepared for a gob full from some people who don't wanna hear what you have to say, and they might point out what they see as your faults also.

I'd say education is best, but it has to suit the person you're trying to educate and not the educator.

Not whilst driving no, best to just concentrate on your own not dangerous actions especially when behind the wheel..

none of us despite some liking to assume so do 'know everything' and the day we stop learning is probably the day the lights go out..

Yes,if you leave it behind in an establishment that doesn't have waitress service.

I'd have to be absolutely sure i was correct before I'd pull someone up. And generally give the benefit of the doubt in most areas. Or just keep my nose out.

But treat my child badly and woe betide you lol - someone pushed in front of her when she was queuing politely and were left in no doubt they were behaving like ignoramuses. I have developed a skill of being very pointed whilst remaining very polite and few know how to respond

What if it is a place that SHOULD have a table cleaning and clearing service, are you not helping to teach then by leaving it on the table?

Any of the fast food places with litter bins and tray stacks are giving you the opportunity to put your litter in the bin.

I can't imagine why you wouldn't. Your hardly teaching a 16yr old in minimum wage a lesson by leaving your litter on the table.

Generally I'm not bothered if people do or not but in this instance (a KFC opposite a cinema half an hour before the big film on a Good Friday) it was just exceptionally busy with families waiting for places to sit down and people having to clear other people's litter to get to a table.

In this circumstance, if you think it's reasonable to stand up and walk past someone who now has to throw your litter in the bin to sit at the table then you are ignorant and selfish In the most literal sense of the both words.

I take your point, and I wouldn't be in that place so not personally affected. but you missed my point, it is the owners of the restaurant that should be taught they need to be employing 2 16 year olds on minimum wage. not expecting the customers to do it for them.

Who are we to deem who is foolish and who isn't? Education is one of the most important part of a youngsters formulative life. And we should never stop learning. But it's a dangerous game to decide who dictates who needs to learn what, based on personal preferences.

lf something is disgarded then yes by definition it is litter. You have a very feable arguement for what is effectively Slovenliness.
