You may be aware but HM Government is splashing out £200m on a new polar research ship.

In keeping with the times, it was suggested that the name of the vessel be put to public vote - expecting, I dunno, RRS Shackleton or Attenborough or something.

Anyway, the runaway favourite with 89,280 votes is:

Boaty Mcboatface

Aside from the leading contender, ideas included Its Bloody Cold Here, What Iceberg, Captain Haddock, Big Shipinnit, Science!!! and Big Metal Floaty Thingy-thing.

One of the British Antarctic Survey ships is called the Ernest Shackleton already though.

And he had a plane named after him, but he recognised the importance of music. And therefore was responsible for the Shackleton banjo company.

That would probably explain some of the dumber messages on here! Remember the guy who said "Hitler had it right"!

Things like this kill social media though... what possible good can come from bots contributing to social media.
