I appreciate her drive and charisma and what she did for blues/rock but I just find her voice as irritating as a dentists drill!

I've got a few albums but prefer janis joplin with big brother and the holding company now that's a raw sound perfect for her vocal. Band should have got more credit than they did.

Speaking (or should that be singing) as a moderately successful blues/rock/roots singer/songwriter/harmonica player, I can't stand her. Such a scratchy whiny overdone delivery.

I'm in awe of truly great vocalists, the likes of Joe Cocker, Tina Turner, Michael Bolton (don't care much for his repertoire though), Lowell George, Bonnie Raitt (Ms Raitt, my offer of marriage still stands), cone to mind. But Janis Joplin wouldn't make my top 100.

Actually both spellings are correct as both are used. Watched a really good program on bbc4 earlier about her and both spellings were on there.

She would never have won the x factor, but then again, nother would Joe cocker, Ronnie James Dio, or John Lennon, I think people sometimes judge on technical ability, and forget the soul if the music, all of westlife are better singers than Phil Collins, but even with the range and ability of mariah, on their cover of against all odds, they couldn't convey the emotion of Phil, not singing from the diaphragm, but from the heart.

I think she was amazing, but sometimes overdid it a bit.

My favourite stuff tends to be the slightly more reigned-in vocals mike on Bobby McGee and the quieter bits of Cry Baby.

I think part of the problem was that BBATHC were a very loud, not very subtle backing band!

Actually, its full of talented people that can sing, but get screwed over by cowel, it serves no purpose for him to have winners who's carerers last mire than 12 months, there have been some awful singers on there that have won, but some great voices have home out if it, but not git anywhere near reaching their potential, for example Rebecca Ferguson, great voice, beautiful girl, reminds me a little if both Sade, and Aretha Franklin, where is she now?

I hate x factor, it sells the dream.of overnight success to a generation obsessed with having everything now, rather than 10 years of gigs, and honing their craft

I seen a little girl getting interviewed. When asked what she wants to be when she grows up ,she replied saying she wants to be on x factor. And yes some can sing but still reckon it's a rigged show.also me as a guitarist did have a college band ,we could play well together but grew up and sex drugs and roll .I think we wouldn't have made it past audition, but do see were your coming from .plus I do know a few people who made an attempt to action.

I do know that the band themselves admitted they were often way too loud for her.

They also got criticised in the press and by people in the industry for being too loud and out of tune.

The documentaries and recordings I've seen/heard, the band sound a bit lumpen to me. Always felt she sounded better with the bands she formed once she ditched them.

Just my take on it though. One man's bog-standard guitarist is another man's guitar-God. The way it should be

I know watched the documentary. But they also got there act together and got tight I like many different bands. There rawness captured me.

Tell you what - it's been a few years. I'll listen again. I'm not really into loud guitary stuff these days though, so that'll influence me probably!

Tell you what - it's been a few years. I'll listen again. I'm not really into loud guitary stuff these days though, so that'll influence me probably!
