right... found out at 3.30 this afternoon that it looks like as on the end of july... i will no longer have a job....

don't worry... i am okay....

what i would like help with is that for basically the last 11 years i have been in the travel industry... how do i now start the job hun... do i circle everything in the papers... do i go to employment agencies ect ect...

if there anything that i need to know that i haven't really thought of just in case... for example house/mortgage/card protection... council tax... ect ect ect...

just as well i have a long weekend... i have decided beer, kebab and a blowout tonight to get it out of my system... then as of monday morning the search starts....

start looking now, join 'linkedin' and create a good profile and ask for some testimonials from reliable people who have worked with/for you ... a few headhunters recruit from there.

my partner has also found out today that no money is available in next years budget to retain his services.

im gutted for him as i know how hard he works in providing valuable support to help turnaround the lives of young people who have had a shit start to life.

thats the council starting to cut back on statutory services.......some painfull years ahead me thinks

duno how much help it'l be but try- jobcentre.gov.uk reed recruitment, agency websites, if yr in the travel industry try major airlines for all sorts of jobs??

My job finishes next Friday and while there are plenty of jobs about, there are also plenty of peeps chasing them.

I would update my C.V and send copies to all travel companies in my area. I wouldn't bother with the job centre they will point you in the wrong direction like they did with Reno. He's a chef, lost his job the job centre put him up with jobs that were not cooking. We ended up sending over 100 C.V off and we got lucky he's got a great job at Combined Universities in Cornwall

working in the kitchens.

Maybe you could consider a complete change of direction and retrain for a totally new career. A friend of ours was a high flier at Tesco's and took redundancy and retrained as an electrician, and says work is booming and he's never been happier.

There is always worked for Cisco-trained people and the courses to become one aren't expensive.

Gas engineers are in high demand too and the job pays c.£35k.

Sorry fer yer news.fella ...I was laid of 5 weeks ago ...the 3rd time in a short couple of years ...

A good cv ...portfolio is a good start..

Do it all ....widen your net...A really good agency has given me a couple of prospects ....I mean a really good one ..not these exploiters ...

The local rag here has 5 jobs in it today ...dire to say the least ...

I`m also registered online with the jo agencies ...talk but no play yet ...

In my experience its just as important to look after your well being ....keeping positive and healthy in your outlook ....It can be demoralising ....trust me ...get a routine sorted and structure sorted ...I still get up my normal time ....and found things to do aside from bumming on here ..

Training is a good option ...yer might need some disposable ...

Sorry to hear that, Fabio. Hope you find something that makes you happy sooner rather than later.

I'm afraid I know very little about the industry you're in as I work in IT. However, I think the suggestion about getting a profile created on LinkedIn is a good one. Over the years I've found networking is an important part in managing my career, and LinkedIn helps me keep in touch with people without the risk of them seeing my idiotic Facebook updates.

hey _abio,

u mentioned sortin bills, mortgage etc. Dont be afraid to contact your provider earlier rather than later. Usually if you keep them informed they help or at least understand better, if you get into trouble. (and im sure u wont, bet u will get things sorted quicker than u think)

Im with the other posters, keep positive, and be very proactive. Dont rely on job centre, ur an intelligent guy, you can sort this without their help/hinderance.

Join all the agencies you can that specialize in your skills not just your job area. I remember your job area, I don't think there really are any agencies that specialize in that. Anyway I digress!!!

Be prepared to document every job you apply for, because the JobCentre (assuming you sign on, personally if you can hold it off, do so, they are horrid in there!!!) will insist on seeing everything. I made a spreadsheet of mine.

For every application you send around 1 in 10 will reply.

If you do sign on, one benefit, is you can usually re-train at a much cheaper rate. I started Open Uni when I lost my job last year, it was all paid for. So maybe look at that. It'll help you stand out amongst the other 300 people applying for the same job.

Try voluntary work to keep you occupied. It also looks good on the C.V..

Any other help, you know where the PM button is.

2 rules of jobseeking.

1) most jobs are never advertised publicly. A lot of firms don't even realise they have a vacancy till a cv arrives on their desk.

2) a lot of jobs advertised by agencies don't actually exist. They're only intersted in getting your cv on their books.

Actually the job I'm in now wasn't advertised. I just filled in an application pack online, and was invited to inter_iew 2 weeks later.

What a bum. However, they have given you sufficient notice to plan ahead, which is good on them IMHO.

I would advise getting your CV in order. If you need help with that, let me know.

Once you have that in order, join an on-line job site relevant to your industry, and publish your CV, so that it can be searched by prospective employers.

If you have had your mortgage for sometime, you may be entitled to a payment holiday for as long as a year. Therefore, it may be worth making enquiries now rather than later.

Hey geezer

You've got a decent work history and managerial experience so that's easily transferable into a variety of new roles. It's all about selling yourself to prospective new employers on your CV.

Plus these days with *ahem* free software readily available you can always train yourself on any relevant IT packages if you've got the time and dedication.

And I'd echo the above; speculative applications show initiative and even if there's nothing available immediately, they've got your CV in front of them when they need to hire somebody.
