easter bonnet competition

So my sons Easter bonnet competition was yesterday, and all I can say is, bloody over competitive parents spoiling things again.

I saw the other "kids" entries and there is no way in this earth that they made these hats, I've seen the paintings my sons class have done, and beautiful examples if how a child sees the world they are, but if you expect me to believe that the same kid, who paints pictures of people, without a torso, arms and legs stuck to a head, can make an Easter hat with flashing chic lights and no glue marks, you have another think comming, I gave my son a load of card and craft stuff, and just did the cutting out for him, we had so much fun doing it, and by the end it inky just resembled a hat, but it was all his own work, unlike the girl who won, and just happens to be the daughter of the woman who owns a craft shop.

I can't believe that some people put winning above having fun, they are children for gods sake

I think parents just get a little carried away, I know most people who have kids have been posting their Easter bonnets on Facebook and it just looks like their inner child has come out...maybe she won because it was creative parents have got to work somewhere...

Couldn't agree more. At my sons primary school it's so competitive. The hats they bring in are of great British bonnet bake off styleeeeeee!!!. My 5 year old spent 2 days doing his. He's 5. He was so proud of it. He pasted, stuck, built and painted. It had lambs made of cotton wool with little eyes on. Chicks the whole shebang !!!!

I could see the disappointment on his little face when he didn't get a place.

The winner had obviously been made by a grand designs architect interior designer who's just won an art award !!!!

But he was very good and said " never mind mummy il just try harder next to me "

My gorgeous boss at work who is in fact an art dealer bought it off him for a huge Fenwick designer easter egg made of chocolate . And said it was going to London with him. To he sold. My son said. If you sell it will you give the money to charity !!!

I've obviously done something right brining him up xx

And you're not bitter at all

Years ago I 'helped' my daughter make a Viking longboat over a weekend, I was exceptionally proud of it. She won second place with it because "it was obvious she had made it all herself with no adult help" she was 8 at the time

How do you know that though, they may of been consulted and the parents did their part...just seems to me that you are more competitive than the parents you are having a go about.

No not at all, like I said in my original post, all I did was the scissor work, the rest was his own creativity, and that's my point, it shouldn't be about who's parents are best at making stuff, it should be about kids making stuff, and laughing because daddy has got a chick glued to the back if his t-shirt (true story)

I just think that some parents forget its about kids.

It happens with every crafty competition. Saff's school had theirs yesterday but because she's 9 going on 45 she was far too cool to take part. Gutted!

We have a bonnet parade no competition. There was even a letter to say dont do it for them. Shows whats happened in previous years lol.

My youngests was spectacular and we just put cellotape where and when she told us

I helped my son one year. Well he made it and in my wisdom i added fresh daffadils in the morning thinking how eastery it would be. When it came to the parade he had a face like thunder and if you mention it now he will still say it was the time i made him look like a girl he was about 6 or 7

The brim was at the top of the hat at one point because he glued it on upside down lol, apart from that it was good

I remember my dad doing loads of work on my bonnet when I was a bit younger. Mainly because the garage door had landed on it and caused a massive dent.

That's when it's perfectly OK for parents to step in and make a bonnet look better.

There's a huge difference between helping your child make their ideas work and taking over completely.

You can clearly see when the latter has taken place.

My friend used to do this, she admitted because she was creative & never won at school it was her chance to shine. By Year 6 her daughter turned around & said no more as she was getting picked on by the other kids for always winning.

I don't think they forget about kids I just think some get carried away with it all, the parents inner child comes out. I'm not condoning over competive parents just seeing it from all angles. Well have fun building the egg...lots of newspaper, glue and a ballon and lots of paint

I think it's a shame those who run the competitions encourage it by picking those who clearly had a lot of adult help over those who did it themselves, as winners.

Aww we cheated slightly and just gave her an old hat to decorate. Bet he looked cute as!

I will say this, the bits he glued by him self, I just did the cutting out, but it stayed stuck, he knows his way around a glue stick, and some pva lol
