We've been watching Being Human on Catchup just now.

We really enjoy the show but why oh why do they have to have one third of the screen given over to a signer?

We feel bad taking issue with it but it really ruins the pleasure of the show when you have a woman pulling faces and waving her arms about at the side of the screen.

It makes it very hard to concentrate, surely it must be just as bad for deaf people.

We have total sympathy with deaf people but why can't the signer be made optional like the subtitles are?

Do others feel this way or is it just us being insensitive and selfish?

Doesn't really worry me... I'd hope that if I were deaf I'd be able to watch some things and be able to have a signing person there to help.

I guess you could record the show when it's on rather than watching catch up?

What i wonder is why i tends to be late at night the signer is on , do tv companys think deaf people are insomniacs ?

to be fair i think that the deaf people have the raw end of the deal having to wait till the wee hours to watch signed programmes etc

paying for a person to sign a whole progrme cant be cheap so i doubt it will be someing that can be an optonal extra by pressing the red button etc - no as easy to automate signing as it is subtitles

lol, no what we mean is....it must be just as hard for them trying to watch the show and the signer, off to one side, at the same time.

It would seems easier to read subtitles on the screen.

Just can't understand why both aren't optional in these hi tech times.

cos your liscence fee would rocket and then you'd be bitching about that

is it really that much of an inconvenience? hearing people can watch ANY programme at ANY time, deaf people who prefer to watch it with signing have to wait until the wee hours or watch it on catch up etc

do you really feel that hard done by??

At a guess - it's a good way of brushing up/learning signing skills.

Not so easy to have subtitles running along the bottom of the street when you're out & about.

BSL does not use conventional sentance structure etc and so it may be harder for deaf people to understand subtitles (i struggle to understand them if its on a live programme as the automated system doesnt pick up on accents etc well)

A number of (admittedly) older deaf people were never taught to read or write because their parents and the education system never imagined they'd have any use for those skills

Exactly, give it a go, try concentrating on the signer and watching the action at the same time.

Much harder than the subtitles that are directly in the line of vision.

Plus, the signer will sometimes be absent or motionless through some sections of dialogue.

Bloody Hell, this sounds like Karl Pilkington!
