what freedom?

i can't get a passport but even if i could i'd need that to travel (and money), nothing is free, there are records of my info everywhere, someone made laws that i can go to prison for breaking, my taxes pay for shit that i don't agree with, i have to campaign for justice, i have to protest to be heard.

"We pay a high price for it !!"

Freedom? It is a somewhat loose concept.

Freedom to do what?

You're free to wank in front of a supermarket if you so wish but you will probably be arrested for it.

You're free to attack someone but you will probably serve time.

You are free to ... Well, I could go on. A plea to the great and undefined concept of freedom is a little unthinking?

I'm just amazed at the comments of those who have all the freedoms that millions of others don't have, and have all the freedoms that those who commit atrocities like Belgium this morning would take away.........freedom is not free. It has to be fought for and when you lose those freedoms you will truly miss them.

I am in no way saying that North Korea is a better or easier place to live.

I value the system that we have here but it is by no means perfect and does not bestow "freedom" on our citizens.

The cry for "freedom" is unthinking and might very well be interpreted as a cry for "anarchy."

You need respect for other people's freedom, too. And that is where it becomes rather more difficult to define properly.

You are free to come onto an open forum and comment, you are free to come on this site and meet who you want.

You're free to enjoy your leisure, music, films, any number of kinks, sexual situations, foods and many other things.

Of course there is a price, we pay taxes, we pay for services, we pay for health care. But they are all things I am willing to pay for that, to live in a country where if someone wrongs me, I can get justice. I don't agree with all the laws, I don't agree with our current leaders but the laws are in place to protect the many.

It's not a perfect system, there never will be. Someone will always feel aggrieved, like they are the victim.

But you are able to think what you want, say what you want, be who you want to be. You can be free if you want, live outside of the laws they put in place but when someone wrongs you, you can't call for justice because it is someone simply exercising their own freedom.

No, we aren't completely free, but we have a hell of a lot more freedom than a lot of people.

Limitless freedom does not exist in any country on earth.

We are limited in many ways.

If by freedom you mean the ability to leave in peace within the confines of the law then I'd say there are lots of things that endanger that; antisocial behaviour, domestic violence, terrorism etc etc...

And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!

London / Herts

Freedom, like everything else, is subjective. My mother sees no issue with everyone being chipped, and cctv cameras being installed absolutely everywhere. I on the other hand think it's an outrageous deprivation of privacy, which in turn curbs liberty.

And, as the above example demonstrates, freedom is also a very amorphous concept. Am I more free than a Bedouin wandering the deserts of Syria and Saudi Arabia? What makes him more or less free than me? Is it money? Privacy? Pressures of culture, even?

Interesting...

Now we're treading on more philosophical grounds.

Are you all aware of negative vs. positive freedoms?

That is:

* Freedom *to* (positive - eg freedom to have multiple partners)

And

* Freedom *from* (negative - eg freedom from being stoned to death for having multiple partners)

Yes that's about right 7000 dollars per person or about 4000 pounds, yes we'll all live the good life on that money for all malarky?.

Just a thought not for you but the other guy who claimed there's plenty for all?.

The world currently uses 85 million barrels of oil a day, in reality 85% of that is used by about 20% of the global population, so for everyone to lead the life we lead, you'd need to up world oil supply to about somewhere around 400 million barrels a day, at that rate you'd use more oil globally in just 8 years than we've used in 130 years of oil usage!.

The world pretty much Max's out it's grain/wheat harvest at the minute and that's with 1.5 billon people on the verge of starving, I guess we could go full on GM and increase harvest by about 15% maybe 20% but in reality it means the people in the west cutting back massively, I mean sure they need it but you see if they'll volunteer it!.

And I didn't even go into the Chinese acquiring Western tastes for meat eating!!!... I mean you'd need a 20% increase in crops just to feed the cattle for the meat in China?.

.

.

Everybody wants to help the world's poor and starving, but that's because they all think it just involves billionaires giving up boats and footballers giving up flash cars!

The rest are just democratically agreed regulations

The freedom to punch as enshrined in our democratically agreed legislation.

Sometimes, I wonder. And that is not at a boxing match..

Lol your free to punch somebody who's offended you, we just agree it has consequences!.

I'm free to offend anyone and I often do, it's one of my freedoms I enjoy

As far as I am aware, there is no law in our society preventing you from voicing that opinion, which is probably a good thing as my farts do indeed smell from time to time. I am, however, a little unsure as to how that advances any "freedom" argument - other than that I am generally free to fart.

I really can't understand why there so coy about it?

I'm all for depopulation, there's way to many of you buggers about!no such thing as overcrowded there's plenty of money and food for everyone it's just rich elitists trying to convince everyone ..

Divide one by the other see what we all get each?

It sounds like a big number but google calculator is telling me it's only about £7000.

well tbh cutting down on meat is a good thing (for farmed animals and humans), and your farts don't smell as bad.

same for the amount of obese people could be cut down to feed the starving? maybe eat people if we have to...

as for oil, we could produce more efficient cities, where people don't need to travel to work, make it so we only import/export necessary goods (which i've probably underestimated the amount of necessary stuff here).

Freedom is a priviledge we all take for granted sometimes.

The concept of freedom to most people is the ability and right to go about our daily lives without being bothered or told what we can or can't do, obviously within reason.

However, laws have always been there to curtail our freedom in the sense that certain things are illegal to do, and rightly so, and also to provide us with security and rights to do other things freely.

The events of today, and other terrorist or other atrocities, will not affect many in their everyday lives, some of us it does. It should, however, make us stop and look into the freedoms we do have and how we as people manage those freedoms personally.

.

Where do they keep this huge stash of money you think they have?.

Also are you aware that even if they had trillions and trillions and trillions, stashed away the minute they released those gazillions it would debase the currency anyhow, meaning you'd just need 50,000 to do the same as 4000?.

You can debate it all you like, I'm just telling you factually, you cannot get all the people in the world to enjoy the standard you do in the west without you coming down to meet then coming up... Ie you need to get alot poorer (and the Rothschilds if you insist) for them to lead the life you lead!.

Forget money, think about elements.

Copper... To electrify Asia to the standards enjoyed by the west, that would use all the copper in the world.... Sure you can do smart electrification, local generation, smart usage, you might at a pinch be able to do the whole world but that probably require all the aluminium in the world as well, forget the oil, that's impossible, we might be able to push out a hundred million barrels a day maybe 150 it still would never get the WHOLE world to Western standards, sure you could electrify 80% of transport and live in smart city's you might if you could double the oil output get that done, but then you'd need at least another 100,000 twh probably more like 200ktwh of electrical generation...

Take it from me, it's impossible for the WHOLE world to enjoy your standards even if the Rothschild's conspiracy theory were true!.

What that conspiracy is really about, is how much extra wealth you in the first world could have! But don't bullshit me telling me the whole world could live high on the hog because frankly I've read to many real books by clever people to know that's anything like remotely possible!.

The fact remains were highly overpopulated and that will end whether we choose to depopulate or nature takes its course
