Foam roller - I can't stop laughing

Jump to newest

Somewhere in North Norfolk

I've got tense muscles in my shoulders and neck and it's really painful.

Earlier I tried working the knots out by rolling a spiky massage ball between the muscles and a wall. It helped but not enough, so I just tried using a foam massage roller.

Imagining what the contortions must look like had me in fits, despite how sore it was. It must have looked absolutely ridiculous.

Does anyone else use a foam roller? Do you think about how funny you must look using it?

I go to an osteopath - bloody hurts but well worth it. Foam roller must be lots cheaper though so I might get B rollering my shoulders later.

Do you add paint ?

Sarah

Hah, yes, inner thighs is entertaining

I use mine for my calves mostly and even that can be awkward.

How to look ridiculous and torture yourself at the same time!

This is a wide foam tube used for physiotherapy. A lot of people use them for treating tight muscles, especially after sports.

Most painful part along with stretching, I'd happily run for miles or go gym for hours but roller and stretching I swear buckets, must be doing it wrong

Very very painful, I can't take it for long, on quads especially after a week of hitting the gym hard. But it's a necessary evil.

Big Annie says she uses a foam roller instead of a tampon. It's cheaper and she can rinse it under the tap afterwards

Mine's a bit more extreme

It's got knobbly bits all over and is quite hard

I have a smooth one and a firm knobbly one. I had the smooth one first. It hurts less but isn't nearly so effective.

I give a strength and conditioning class for an hour which involves a 20 minute foam rolling session. About 20 rugby players screaming like babies and walking around with jelly legs afterwards. Very funny to watch, but they keeping coming back for more!!

No but I often think how funny I must look even without the help of a foam roller

You roll the offending tight muscles over it. It can require some very inelegant and peculiar manoeuvres! Hence my fits of laughter and what I must look like, interspersed with swearing because it's so sodding painful.

A qualified physio would probably be best to advise on any physio aids you may find beneficial. I'd ask a professional.

It's not going to be pretty. It's my quads and glutes in most need but if I don't do that before yoga then I'm fairly sure I'll cry.

Always avoided the roller in the gym... Some things should always be kept ptivate

I do but they need strong thumbs! I expect my sports therapist to be doing my shoulders with her elbows this afternoon *wince*

A physio once told me I had the most tense shoulders she'd ever encountered. She said they feel like someone poured concrete in there.

Yep, I wouldn't want to do my rolling with anyone watching. The facial contortions alone are bad enough!

Michael thinks it's the funniest thing to watch but I can't stretch my legs out properly without it and I went to a body conditioning class yesterday that was enough to bring a grown woman to tears (melodramatic much?!?).

My massage will bring me to the verge of tears later. I'll be able to move my shoulders afterwards though.

Update:

Gym roller in use so no rolling for me.

Yelped a lot in yoga.

Idea that yoga would help lengthen my muscles again was ridiculous.

Exercising on DOMS is stupid.

I am stupid.

"Foam rollers can make a grown man cry!"

We all know men have a low pain threshold. They make women cry too. Damn them for being so effective!

(Tongue in cheek, I'm a big wuss!)
