The price of a funeral......not going to be morbid but you cant hide from it ??

I just recently had to help a friend in manageing a funeral, i was shocked at the price for a basic funeral.

1x car.

1x hearse.

A priest to give a few words of benediction.

The buryiel plot.

Ancilliary bits and bobs.

£5600.00..........

Excluding head stone....extra £1200.00

Costs more to pass away than stay alive now a days ???.

Yeah it's expensive. Very expensive. I hope I just get thrown in the trash. But then, that's what my dad used to say and yet we gave him an expensive cremation...

Yep:

Get one of those " pre- paid" ones now;

You can book everything you want; even pay it by installments;

Then all your relatives have to do when you cark it , is take the papers to the undertakers and they deal with it;

Two of my relatives did this and it made my life dead easy. And saved the inevitable family row about " what you would have wanted".

Plus it inflation- proofs the cost.

Set mine up already ( includes making sure the medics can have any bits of me they need for organ donations etc)

There is no reason to spend thousands on a funeral.

It can all be done DIY, there's no legal requirement for bodies to be transported in a hearse, you can bung one in the back of a van. Coffins can be made of cardboard, no need for flowers. You'll have to pay the crem if you want burning and make sure that if you want a hole in the ground, it's done legally.

Bung me in a tea chest and bury me in the garden. That'll do.

I'm having a simple green lower cost one. I don't like funeral directors generally - just been to two. The hearse etc seems like something for them. Burial not crem though.

co-op funeral plan is the way to go;

both my elderly parents have the top plan which is the "gold Plan" costing £4195 each, I also have this to prevent anyone having to pay up in future when the time comes

If you are thinking about taking out a co-op plan, become a co-op member first and you will be entitled to £250 off, which is a good saving and better in your pocket.

At the end of the day you should be responsible for your own funeral, why put the Burdon on a loved one or kids

A lot of people are opting not to have funerals & go straight from funeral parlour to Crematorium in a very basic coffin. I can see why!!!

I see a lot of funeral bills through work & would say they average £4K

I wouldn't go for a cardboard coffin. I was at a funeral once where they had one and it was so flimsy that the body nearly fell out of it when they took it out of the hearse.

A bamboo coffin looks much better

Thats why i set up a funeral plan

My partner sadly passed away almost a year ago

he had no life insurance

So raising 5grand wasnt easy and it just added to the pain

hence why i set up a plan i dnt want my family having any added stress when i pass away

My concern with plans is what if you move away? I don't plan on living in Leicester all my life and who knows where I'll go. So can the plans be sent to a different funeral home or can the money saved be transferred back?

I've always said I'd rather be cremated, so no need for an expensive coffin, just to burn it, just put me on a slab then take me off to be cremated

Not quite sure why people are paying nearly £5,000, when my ex died his brother paid £1700, think that's quite sufficient and I'm paying into a pot with Legal & General for my funeral so my kids don't have to find the cost when I die. I've also told them what I want in case I go before my mother so she doesn't interfere and do it how she wants it

I have one as part of my pension. Pays out a lump sum for my funeral and a lump sum to a named person.

Many complain about the costs and that they want to be buried in a cardboard box, if that's what you want fine

but consider the dignity and respect for family members if they turn up to see you off

Its all very well saying these things but I do know I wish to see my parents get the best funeral money can buy, I also have financed this for myself so that my kids don't have to fork out, yet when the time comes, it will be a respected affair with dignity and no embarrassment or bad feeling that only a cardboard box could be afforded

again if that's the way you want to go fine, but consider other family members who are seeing you off

If it's with a large firm, they'd have bases all over the country. Just make sure you tell a couple of loved ones who it's with and where the paperwork is.

Several insurance/ financial companies do one that can be used to pay any undertakers:

And there are a few where different undertakers are able to transfer it between different companies because they are all part of the same association .

It's not quite as straight forward as that, you need somewhere to store the body and doctors to sign the cremation forms amongst other things which is all extra costs and extra stress at a time you don't need it.

But it is is all doable and DIY funrrals are increasingly commen as are basic ones with no service.

It is also possible to do a DIY burial in your own garden

After my old mum died I paid for mine in advance. I could not believe the cost. I wanted too give the old girl a good send off. My mum and dad adopted me when I was a baby and gave me the best upbringing they could. Something I will always appreciate dearly.

and councils. Ive had phone calls to say relatives have died whom ive never ever met or met once or twice. Sounds cold but i refused to pay and let the council pick it up xx

If you have a burial, you have to pay the local authority for that bit of land and for an employee to attend (nearby) to ensure the burial is taking place. But that piece of land where someone is buried is only for a set time (down to L.A), where I have a loved one buried its only for 10yrs then I have to pay again or they can bury on top of her. It's almost been 6yrs and that's flown by, so in 10 I doubt it'll feel like she's been there long enough to have someone buried on top. Obviously I don't think the LA will do this straight away, just a way to make money, which is sad really.

This is actually why there are grants available as the local authority spend a fortune on funerals. It's a surprisingly complex legal situation

They are pricey but should be considered when you're saving and of an elderly age or if living unhealthily. I'd pay good money to ensure my parents have a great funeral, understated and dignified, but I won't be burying them in a cardboard box or anything, it's not of their generation and wouldn't suit them individually.

I always think it's a shame you can't attend your own funeral. Just to see what people really thought of you.

They are expensive. The saddest thing is those funerals that are organised by the Local Authority and only the coffin bearers, vicar and maybe a representative from the Local Authority are there. Some people almost seem to be forgotten by society.

Yes it's expensive but can be done a lot cheaper if your not in shock.

What I mean by this is six years ago my brother died and his funeral cost £6000 my dad and I were in deep shock at him dying as ir was so sudden and unexpected and when arranging the funeral we went along with all the undertakers suggestions.

Eight weeks later my dad's brother passed away but we were expecting it and was more aware of the costs and his funeral only cost £3000 and he had just a lovely send off just like my brother.

My mums cost a little over 3k but we used her savings to cover it..

We had 2cars.. Lots of flowers and a small service and cremation.

that was 4 years ago though

DWP grant is excellent.

Cardboard super expensive.

£3K to £4K is about the cheapest cremation.

It's a super stressful time so make your wishes known or prepay.

Well i wanted the best that i could afford for my man

And as my may was Welsh i added some Welsh to his funeral

played the Welsh national anthem going in

and we all placed a daffodil on his coffin

i know that he would have loved his send off

I am considering my family hence as cheap as possible as no idea what the future holds for them, anything could happen between now and when I die so long as I've a decent coffin, a car to take me there and a headstone that's all that matters to me

I've only got a few rules.

Don't mourn me, I've lead a bloody good life!.

Don't spend money burying me... FFS I'm dead, buy me a pint while I'm alive!! .

Spend the money on a nice bench,I think placed on the welsh coastal path with a brass plaque (put your feet up and enjoy the view, there's plenty of time)

When my father died last year, we just had a hearse from the house and a service at the crem. Co-op was £3,300 and by shopping around we got it down to £1,700

It's crazy expensive. My parents passed away but fortunately had enough money to cover it. Would be awful if you're short on cash.

After watching 2 close relatives pass away a couple of years ago one having nothing and had made no plans and their partner having to find the money and organise it at an already difficult time, the other having a savings account for the cost of their burial and seeing how much easier it was on those left behind I saved the cost of a cremation and stuck it in account but after looking at those pre paid ones might do that instead over the next couple of years and spend the savings on a fecking good holiday while I can.

That's all well and good, a lady I knew passed away last year in a care home, she donated her body, it was in her care plan and will but by the time anyone cared to listen to me it was too late or simply her wishes wasn't carried out.
