Budget around 3k. Looking for a reliable, cheap runaround to get me to work and back and multiple 70miles to mufc most weekends.

Thinking a focus.

3k is good money for a motor. Go for small japanese if you aren't doing loads of motorway journeys. Honda Jazz was the no 1 car in the Uk last year and it is Uk built too. Toyota have some cracking little cars and none of them ail much. I worked for Honda and you can't question their reliability.

Hello Bedhead,

don't think of a specific model, have a look at what's around that you like at the price you want to pay. If you look at larger cars you may well find one for less than your budget. My wife bought a 2000 Mondeo off E Bay (but local to us) for £700 about five years ago, apart from servicing and fuel it's cost nothing to run, no problems, completely reliable.

on the road to nowhere in particular

A focus is a great car. Think of a mondeo and you will get more for your money. A Honda Civic is a great car if you can get one for the money. Same thing with the Accord, more bang for your buck.

The Focus is a workhorse, the diesels can be troublesome though and avoid the 2000 - 2004 models. They used crap steel and they were rot boxes.

Could pick up a Skoda VRS diesel for about that price, really reliable and fun to drive. Or a BMW 3 Series.

Three grand!!!! Christ, Easy will testify I'd have a forecourt of cars for that money and they'd all last for years. I bought her one for £120, 34k on the clock, FSH, one old dude owner. Transit scraped the bonnet and I wanted it sprayed but the insurance company wanted to write it off (Volvo). Gave us £1300 for it. (and you wonder why car insurance is through the roof.

Avoid the 1.6tdci, look on eBay, see loads for spares or repair. They blow turbo's for fun.
