I usually shop in Tesco or Asda but today I was driving past Aldi so nipped in too get some essentials. I couldn't believe how cheap it was. I ended up with a trolley load of stuff ! How do the big four explain their higher prices compared to the discount supermarkets ? I'm now an Aldi convert.

They can't explain it, that is why the big supermarkets profits have dropped, and Aldi and Lidl are taking their custom away.

i was in asda a few days ago shopping on my list was a microwave, they had them on shelf, one i wanted wasnt boxed , they wouldnt let me buy it as its a display model,so i ended up going to tescos to buy one, as far as im concerned if its on the shelf its for sale

Went to asda first and parked in their carpark got a few bits in there, walked to aldi put the stuff back in the car then walked to farm foods the 99p shop and iceland! Do it every week and saves loads, like 6 tins of princes tuna is £3.39 in farm foods, you'd pay 5 quid for 4 tins in asda or tesco. Works for me because they're all in spitting distance and you can park in asda car park and walk to each of them. B&M for cleaning stuff when I need it.

I now find Aldi such a difficult place to shop. Odd brands of food I've never heard of. Cramped and cluttered isles. Feel rushed at the tills. So on the rare occasions i do a supermarket ahop i go Tesco where i feel i get good food for a reasonable price plus i can actually recognise the food on the shelves.

My local grocery store is Aldi. It's easy to get round, and nice and cheap. Plus at my store when the queues at the checkout get past 3 people, they always open up another one so it's nice and quick. I much prefer it to other stores now

I'm an Aldi convert too - I think a lot of their items are the same as lots of branded goods - just in different packaging! And lots cheaper.

At the till - you have to go like the clappers to keep up and there's no frills in that way. I prefer a lot of it to the others - even Sainsburys and Waitrose.

Funnily enough I started shopping there a few months ago and have had the same conversation twice this week.

There are people out there who think it's the be all and end all and I'm not too sure and this is why.

Nearly all of Aldi's products are branded to look like famous brands but they have not gone through years of perfection like the more well known products. Unlike mainstream supermarkets who have there name on their products in a prominent position. All of Aldi's have some other name with there tiny logo or caveat on the back making it appear a more expensive brand at a cheaper price.

If you were to buy all your produce in say Morrison's and their own branded products. Would the price work out roughly the same?

Admittedly some of their products are very good. I like their smoked salmon and cheese. There frozen stuff not so. As for the chocolate and crisps I'll go with what I know. Their cereal is well priced but not as tasty as a supermarket or a well known brand.

Just my two pence.

I am a bachelor but I do like Waitrose as all the fresh produce is just that fresh

The butchers and fishmonger always have great fresh wares. I just don't feel right buying tuna chunks from Chernobyl the size of fluffy dice ?

We have started shopping in Marks and Spencers too. They have various offers and currently it's possible to get three fresh chickens for £10.

I didn't say they were inferior i said i didn't recognise them. Sometimes i found it hard to even know what item it was inside the packaging. I have no interest in wasting money on food that i don't recognise ! I usually buy Tescos own brand.

Plus there were other reasons i prefer to shop elsewhere.

I do the bulk of my shopping in Lidl we don't have an aldi. Few things lidl don't have I have Tesco deliver on a £1 delivery works like a dream. Lidl have some wonderful things just had a lobster for lunch great.

I get a big shop from Tesco every fortnight. I used to use asda but Tesco will Carry my shopping up my three flights of stairs for me asda point blank refused. If I've forgotten something there's an aldi at the top of the street.

Have you made a direct comparison of quality? I have and can truthfully find no difference in the fresh produce apart from price. Aldi also source as locally as possible but I don't think they are as good as Waitrose etc

both Aldi and Lidl import most of their goods..........including fresh produce. If you look at the eternalities then cheaper at the till maybe costly for the environment?

If Aldi was nearer I'd always shop there. Excellent quality and interesting produce. Waitrose is my Dad's local, overpriced and nothing special. Do like M&S though some good offers and always new items.

how do you know it's always a mess if you won't step foot in there?

I like Lidl because it's smaller and the staff don't get in my way all the time and pretend I'm not there. Also the people that shop there tend to be more attractive

The top shelf aged meat is outstanding and I know ex butchers who buy it, venison burgers brill, frozen speciality prawns outstanding, 36 month aged cheese yummy, fresh fruit and veg generally good, aged port excellent -

"Funnily enough I started shopping there a few months ago and have had the same conversation twice this week.

There are people out there who think it's the be all and end all and I'm not too sure and this is why.

Nearly all of Aldi's products are branded to look like famous brands but they have not gone through years of perfection like the more well known products. Unlike mainstream supermarkets who have there name on their products in a prominent position. All of Aldi's have some other name with there tiny logo or caveat on the back making it appear a more expensive brand at a cheaper price.

If you were to buy all your produce in say Morrison's and their own branded products. Would the price work out roughly the same?

Admittedly some of their products are very good. I like their smoked salmon and cheese. There frozen stuff not so. As for the chocolate and crisps I'll go with what I know. Their cereal is well priced but not as tasty as a supermarket or a well known brand.

Try Ocado for gluten free items. Massive difference to the major supermarkets. Morrisons have upped their game regarding gf... I pop to M&S too (they have also added more items to their gf range). My kids had scotch eggs & pork pies for the first time ever a few weeks back

aldi banned all gmos while the big 4 still stock food covered in harmful chemicals I love aldi but don't have one near us its the other side of mk so we don't use it sadly their food is better quality than Tesco own brand or Asda own brand its rather strange and they pay better wages to their staff than any other supermarket

Never lived near a Waitrose. M&S does seem to filter out the riff-raff but Asda/Morrisons/Sainsburys/Tesco - I see the same kind of scum in all those places, along with everyone else. If anything I'd say I see less of them in Lidl.

Some things are cheaper in Aldi/ lidl etc because they are a lower grade product you may not notice the difference but it may be down to a vegs shape or colour etc and the big guns won't accept them.

I was greeted by the bread making machine churning out millions of cheesy buns. They made me pay in cash! Waitrose never make one carry cash?"

Time is a great healer, visit Waitrose, help yourself to the free coffee from a machine and wander among the fragrant aisles, you'll soon be restored to normality.

The stigma of shopping in places like aldi and lidl have dissapeared now compared to a couple of years ago it's pretty much savvy shoppers now alot of M&S etc converts out to save a few extra pennies !!

in Manchester there is a Lidl directly next to the GUM clinic now that is a stigmatic choice !

Aldi have a very unique way of dealing with suppliers. They invite people to tender for a product, with a per piece wholesale price.

They then select based on a blind taste test. Regardless of its the cheapest or the most expensive in the price range it's chosen.

The packaging may be different but the contents are often exactly the same as in M&S, sainsburys, asda etc. Just a different label.

So true, but it's the only exercise many Americans get, as they have not yet brought in drive through supermarkets

Lidl /Aldi don't stock everything I want to buy, but for most shopping trips I can get what's needed in minutes not hours
