So? Tea? When do you put the milk in?

When I visited my gran as a kid, she used a teapot. So I was brought up with this order..... Milk then sugar, let the tea brew, then pour.

Now I'm a grown up, I drink coffee and I put the milk in when waiting for the kettle to boil.

(Inspired my this......http://youtu.be/FtK_vfp8po8)

on the road to nowhere in particular

Tea from pot = milk in first.

Teabag in cup = milk in last.

Nothing to do with manners or etiquette and everything to do with science.

If teabag tea then milk last, but tea leaf tea it has to be first as to check it's not too strong, both MUST be accompanied by Rich Tea Biscuits though without a doubt

Just how it should be but can't remember the last time I had tea from a pot.

If it's a proper fine-bone china teacup, always put the milk in first as the hot tea may crack the cup. If it's a mug, do whatever the hell you want

Milk last. I do my brew in the cup so I always go bag, water, sugar (two please) then milk. Instant coffee though has to be milk before water.

Always last as the hotter the water the better the tea. Cold milk spoils the brew....

Milk first, but not that fussy. Number One Chap however has phenomenal tea and coffee OCD and I genuinely can't remember his hot drink making protocol.

Just had the news flash that my brew making skills were in demand.

TEA

Water off the boil. That means just under or over as not to burn the leaves. Add water to cup/pot with bag/leaves. Add sugar to the cup if using a pot people. Milk goes in last after tea has brewed for at least thirty seconds to a minute then continue to brew until your likeness has been achieved.

COFFEE

Coffee and milk in cup first as not to scorch the granules. That's why you get the bitter taste. Then add the water and sugar.

Adding milk first does not allow the tea to release its flavours.

the bitter taste in coffee comes from using cheap coffee or filter coffee that has been left to stand too long.

Incidentally, I make my coffee with fresh grounds filtered into a jug and then mixed half and half with warmed milk

Warmed milk - bleugh, just the smell of it makes me retch. However, proper, fresh coffee (black) yes please, but not too much as it kinda makes me loopy. Bad chain drinking coffee moment when revising for my a levels actually made my mother think I was on drugs.

Yes cheap coffee beans do account for a bitter taste as well. Just ask Starbucks.

Tea last, coffee depends if it's instant in which case first or the hot water burns the granules. For ground coffee though hot milk in last

To add, regarding tea, the above is true for black tea. Green and white tea should be brewed with water well off the boil (as they are more delicate than black tea)

Optimal coffee temperature for ground coffee is about 91 degrees C. No idea about instant coffee because that stuff tastes like ass droppings (but when I make it for other people I add milk in first and no one's complained yet)

Surely it is bad manners and poor etiquette to make a crap cup of tea?

Also... Agreed!

Crap brew makers never ride shotgun.

Alas this is as far as I dare to go without sounding like a coffee wanker, I refer to my thread of last week on rant Thursday.

Milk in first so the milk doesn't scald. It affects the taste.
