Lots of people claim to have a good sense of humour, and it's generally a positive trait, but what exactly is humour?

It seems to me that many jokes, and things we find funny are very often derived from negativity (like slipping on a banana peel/Del Boy going to lean on the bar and falling through it), so is humour attractive, because it highlights a persons ability to draw positives/pleasure/amusement from otherwise negative/destructive circumstances?

No. It is just funny.

I like humor that shows intelligence. In order to joke about something in a witty way you usually have to be intelligent enough to understand it, and to twist it into something funny.

So that's the type of humor I find atractive because I like intelligence, but not someone who us always serious. It doesn't really depend on positivity or negativity.

I think you over analyse it too much if something is funny you laugh at it. Does it really matter if it's laughing at something positive or negative?

Only fools and horses on a whole is funny, my favourite programme ever. But I don't get the hype around that bit

This is so true. take the del boy bar flap, it's the ability of the writer to see the humour and translate it to a visual spectacle for our pleasure that is deserving of our laughter. bl***dy funny, never to be repeated.

Humour is just humour. I can be crying with laughter and others around me laugh, at my laugh. Laughing can be infectious.

Sometimes we laugh to hide pain or awkwardness but laughter is a tonic. I'm going to smile insanely tomorrow and see what reaction I get.

Sheldon in BBT is a great example. He shouldn't be funny , but he sure is.

But what is it which grants the identity of something being funny or humorous?

Our brains. Someone will probably be able to tell us why some laugh at slapstick or stand up or situation comedy. They all boil down to your senses and your brain.

I get what you're saying, and I honestly would need to think about it a lot more to get at exactly what makes something funny for me, but it isn't necessarily negativity. Think about puns, irony, or sarcasm. These are just some forms of humor that don't necessarily rely on negativity.

Slapstick comedy can be somewhat negative, but as I mentioned, I don't necessarily find it funny. Some is, some isn't.

Not all humour is derived from others misfortune. A carrot that looks like a cock can be funny. The look of surprise on a child's face when they open a Christmas present can be funny.

I'm no psychologist or medical scientist but I guess humour is attractive as laughing releases positive endorphins that make you feel good. The more the people around you make you feel good, the more attractive I guess they would seem.

The humour in the Dell Boy falling through the open bar flap is the irony of him telling Trigger "play it cool, you know what I mean' not the act of falling over. Humour is found in all sorts of situations and being able to find it and from time to time express it in a witty timely way for me constitutes a good sense of humour. I don't have one though. I have a sense of humour but it's not a good one
