drivers awareness courses

Who's had to do one of these before? I very stupidly got caught speeding

The police have offered me one of these courses, if I do it I don't get points on my licence is that correct, and do I have to inform my insurance company, or is that only if I get given points?

I've had to do one a couple of years ago. They're pretty good, to be fair and it's just a few hours out of your day. No points so don't believe you need to tell insurance company. If you get caught again within 3 years - I think you've no choice, you'll have to have points the next time.

I've done one it's fine pretty boring but it's worth it to avoid the points... No you don't need to inform your insurance company if you do the course but if you don't and take the points then as your aware you do

I actually enjoyed mine - it was so long since I passed my test it was a refresher. It was me, loads of Lorry drivers & an elderly lady

Or just knock on drivers door windows, and ask them if they are a driver. note down the answer, look for patterns, and you should have an awareness of a driver. there.. saved you 90 quid

Some require you to inform them now. Admiral do if you read the small print, also if you phone to renew your insurance they ask you specifically if you've done a speed awareness.

I've just had to renew is how I know this.

Chances are if you've been driving a while and this is your first conviction then neither will make a difference to your premium.

I had to do one a year ago was going 40 in a 30 .I didn't realise.But I enjoyed the course but didn't enjoy paying for it . A few months previously I took the piss out of my friend for speeding ,so when I got mine ,she was amused.

I got a ticket yesterday 37 in a 30 zone at 3am.

No offer of speed awareness. ..yet!

It depends who is running it; some are very good; some not so:

At least it avoids the points;

And if it is well run you will find it extremely informative.

You will also be astounded at the lack of of basic driving knowledge of many in the room....

Agreed. To my knowledge if the ins co does not ask you are only obliged to tell them about changes to your health in relation to your fitness to drive or changes to your licence.

And an awareness course neither of these.

I fought tooth and nail when i was caught speeding and only 7mph over the 30 mph limit.

I asked for the calibraion certificate of the camera, i asked if they had council permission to park on a verge. i asked all sorts of questions and the police answered them all correctly.

After a week i was offerd the course and took it......to be fair i did learn something and found it interesting.

I saved 3 points and the fine but the course cost £90.00.

Yeah there was a article on it saying that the police should be advising people to tell there insurance . Instead of letting people think they don't need to . It can void any future claims

Check if it was asked on your insurance proposal form when you took it out, if it was, you'll have to tell them or your insurance is void. If they specifically ask at renewal, then you must tell them or your insurance will be void.

Avoid Admiral, they ask and load an extra £60 on your premium.

Yes, I did a course, couple of mph over going out of town down a hill, hidden camera (I mean totally hidden).

Found the course dull and uninteresting, but was amazed at the lack of knowledge displayed by the participants - personally, I didn't learn anything new and it hasn't changed my driving style.

However, what did amuse me, was during the break, a member of their staff returned from the shops and reversed into a lamp post in their car park.

Most of the providers are run by ex- police, the provider gets half the fee and the prosecuting force gets the other half - nice little jobs for the boys earner.

I did one 3 years ago.

I didn't lie when I said at the end that I would change how I drive.

I am now more aware of the speed I'm doing, also more conscious of surroundings/situations when driving.

So yes I found it informative.

Don't get me started on "Driver awareness" courses

I got caught speeding 33 in a 30 about 5 years ago. Had a clean license at the time and the officer offered me this course which I was relatively pleased about.

I booked online and my confirmation letter came through the post with the address of the local Holiday this was taking place at.

Due to abnormal heavy traffic on the day of my course I arrived 15mins late and the receptionist refused my entry. Said that I had to rebook. The problem is you can't rebook so I received a court hearing. Surrey Police rejected my reason for arriving late and I received 3 points and a total fine of £670. The course also set me back £105, making my 33 in a 30 very costly indeed. £775 + 3 points. And they call it the Justice System. What a load of tripe. I was extremely angry to say the least

I understand the hassle etc about the course and not getting there on time however if you hadnt been doing 33 in an area where the limit is 30 then none of the rest would have happened.

Done one last week. Some interesting stuff learnt. Nothing to worry about worth it . Just group discussions . Remember to take your pen home because it's the most expensive pen you will ever buy £79 haha

if you do the course which I do advise you to do there's no need to tell your insurance company and make sure you get a date for it if you don't here from them after a few days phone them to make sure of the date as if you miss it you get the points and a fine to

I had to do one a few years ago. It was really good, and I actually enjoyed it a fair bit. Mine was a full day course (for dangerous driving) and I got a couple of hours of advanced driving lessons in the afternoon which has made me a much better driver.
