After recently watching my nan struggle to breathe and waiting for her heart to give up absolutely I am in favour of assisted dying.

You wouldn't put a dog through what she went through, it would be considered inhumane. Just morphine to make her 'comfortable', well she looked and sounded far from comfortable to me!

I have always said, even to my older children....if I was terminally ill I don't want to linger and make my families life hard and sad....i just want to die with them remembering me as I am and not a withered up miserable shell.

I'm all for euthanasia

And its probably a horrible point...more cost effective than dragging out all kinds of medical procedures that ultimately make the process longer and harder than it needs to be

We put animals down who suffer....surely doing the same for people is a kind thing

I've had to put a dog down and it was heartbreaking

I cried more about that dog than I did about my mum dying

Absolutely

I have rested all my elder dogs head in my arms as they were gently put to sleep at home, in the comfort of the home they live in, its sad to see, but the best way.

Watching your pet family dog lose the power of its legs, whilst it is making every effort to get outside to do the toilet is heart breaking and you cant carry a 14 stone dog outside.

You watch them deteriorate to the point you have to do the most humane thing possible which is to end their pain no matter how much you love them, I hope when my time comes, it comes quick rather than the torture of a long slow death

Aye he was a big gsd, legs were going, he snapped his teeth and caught my daughter.... We'd had him from a baby and I knew he'd never bite anyone (except an intruder)so we went to the vets where they discovered a tumour... They said kindest thing was to put him to sleep

They gave him an injection that was like 10 pints of Stella ( was a bit worried as my ex would have 10 pints and become violent...) he was all relaxed and cuddled up on my lap when he went... Lovely dog R.I.P Pete

But would you want them to have to make the choice? or give the injection?

My mother has dementia, she like me has always feared the illness and hoped she would die before she got it.

But that is now forgotten, as is 5 minutes ago, and she seems happy in her world. So I am not going to take her out of it, though I do look at her and hope I die before it gets me.

I do ensure that she has lots of booze and pills that don't play nice with it available, if she has a clear head day she has the opportunity to step out, but I won't help her.

I thought i could but when my dog was dying of kidney failure i just couldn't bring myself to put her down.

She did suffer for several hours because of it and i like to think i would do things differently next time and not be selfish and pretend she was going to live forever despite what i'd been told.

The vet never recommended me to put her down either. Just said she wouldn't last much longer and wrote a prescription for a months arthritis meds, then said oh just do 2 weeks worth. Which meant he knew she wouldn't live for a month even.

I think it's good they didn't push for me to kill my dog because i would've always had a 'what if i hadn't put her down...' going on in my head. I mainly wanted to give her a chance to prove the vet wrong i guess and have my happy ending where she didn't die.

I acknowledge it was a completely selfish decision. I don't regret it and not sure if i wouldn't do the same thing again.

Yes: they don't have to do it; or assist; if they wish to be involved they will have my blessing; but they do not have to put themselves into legal jeopardy by assisting, but they are under no illusion that they are not to intervene under any circumstances to prevent it;

Hopefully the world will become sane enough to allow this to happen legally in more places than currently. I have already made some arrangements to facilitate this, should I need it.

Oh, and by the way, I would have no moral problem at all in "assisting" a freind or loved one in this way.

It's just the legal issues which are annoying at the moment.

Depends how low the stock of soylent green was getting

But on a serious note yes I'm in favour, no one should have to die slowly in agony if a painless option is available.

It does however raise huge issues about consent and coercion.

Mmm, generally in favour.

I (T) watched over my Dad while he died in Cyprus. It took a couple of days. There was nothing wrong with him. They told me he had pneumonia but it didn't look like it to me. My Mother had died a year before, no autopsy and no questions as she was 84 and it was assumed she'd had a heart attack. He couldn't handle life without her as had let her do practically everything for 50+ years, couldn't even write a cheque or pay a bill.

I suspect (or a little more than suspect) he had an arrangement with the private hospital they used to attend, that if he had any illness at all that they not treat it but put him on a morphine drip.

Effectively he let himself die or was 'helped along'

I still question my own part in what happened.

Absolutely ! Having gone through helplessly watching somebody's final days i'm all for euthanasia , it is inhumane & I can't believe that in the year of 2016 we don't have the option of calling it a day quickly rather than suffering. Me - I'd rather scuttle off & go out with a bang given the choice.

I would, after being a carer and seeing people clinging on to life for weeks on end was just heartbreaking to witness, no one should have to die like that, our pets don't go through that pain so why a human being?

I really can't say until I'm in that situation. I would hope that a relative who wanted help would be able to set things in place before they got too bad. While I agree with the likes of the clinics abroad I'd feel like I'd killed someone I loved if I had to arrange it.

And before anyone jumps in.. yes it would be bloody heartbreaking to see a loved one suffer... I just don't know what I'd do until I'm in that situation.

I agree completely, I had a lovely lady cling on for nearly three weeks, we all sat with her day and night so she was never alone and watching her was so painful. I had another lady, who was a beautiful sole, with advance dementia too, she didn't suffer as long and again I sat with her until I had to leave and she died alone, with no family or friends to be with her, seeing someone that was so full of life despite her dementia she was such a fun lady and see her just lying their, in so much pain (our district nurses and doctors that used to come to the home never put a driver in anyone that I know off, despite us pleading) was awful, I have to say I do like end of life care, being able to help someone in there final weeks, days or hours was humbling and something I never thought I could cope with but I did and I found a strength I never knew I had, care assistants and anyone who helps dying residents are all amazing in my book, it's the side of life and work nobody wants to think about or talk about, people that get paid lots of money to work in a bank (sorry ads) or whatever have no idea what people that get very little money to care for people that are dying go through, I like to think the reason so many of my residents in the home I worked in lasted so long because of the wonderful care they received, sorry for the long post but I get white passionate on the subject

A human no, its against the law in this country and I don't fancy my daugher going into care because I'm in prison, sorry if that sounds harsh but the laws the law and my kids come first

I dont think I could assist in someones death, it would affect me too much and I would always wonder if I had done the right thing.

I have heard many people say they wouldnt want to be a burden on their families and Im not sure that is a good enough reason.

Its a very emotive issue and its not something any of us can really answer until its happening to us. Its easy to say yes I would, there are huge implications.

I hope im never in the situation. I dont think I could allow my children to be put in that position.
