Aren't you part South African too, if I remember rightly? I only ask cos my ex was brought up in SA & he uses a fair few American terms too, like Mom, ATM instead of cash machine, thongs instead of flip flops & pants instead of trousers.

And pavement is a road ( though not used so much in the US nowadays .

And it's logical ; " pavement is a surfaced ( paved road as opposed to dirt road)

Sidewalk is path for walking at the side of the road;

Biscuit derives from the French " bis cuit" - twice cooked, because original biscuits were baked, then cooked (dried out) again to make them crisp;

" cookies" derives from the Dutch " koek" - little cake; so " cookies" were originally softer biscuits.

Except that " chips" in UK used to be fried slices of potato( round), if cut very thin, so they went very crisp, and were " crisp chips"

The square "chips" were introduced into the UK after WW1, as they were already a French/ Belgian dish, and were adopted by soldiers in France and Belgium during the war ( hence the US term French fries. )

So the US " chip" for Crisps derives from the UK " crisp chip".

A dual carriageway is a 'divided highway'. They use highway much as we will use (and misuse) road.

The equivalent to our motorway is freeway or turnpike (toll road) and also Parkway (motorway with no trucks, aka lorries) - Parkways have lower bridges so trucks don't fare well.

I do have fun with this; when my American freinds ask for the bathroom; especially as I don't have a bath, just showers, " sorry, you won't be able to have a bath; you can have a shower"

" Oh , you need a shit? Toilet is there...."
