"surely he is guilty of inciting racial hatred?"

The United States has a very liberal approach to freedom of expression. Protection of the freedom is included in the First Amendment to the Constitution!

It's why groups like the Ku Klux Klan are still allowed to exist over there. And why dinosaurs like Trump can spout their bile.

"It is good, they are thinking, we don't want illegal aliens in our country lol."

I would imagine that most countries would feel the same. However, there are ways and means of expressing and enforcing this.

What many people abroad don't realise is that Americans don't really know much about the world. They live in the massive bubble that is the USA.

During the Bush/Kerry election a few people voting here in the UK were asked why they had voted for Kerry. They said "Because we have been outside the US". Only a small percentage know much about how their leaders are perceived in the outside world.

The American political machine is helped by this ignorance. So if the right soundbites reinforce often familial voting patterns, you could end up with the likes of Trump in the West Wing

Interestingly, the safest place for him would be the White House. He would be nullified by so many areas then. Political impotence is not unusual for a President.

If he doesn't succeed however, but can still act to incite those who are drawn to him, then he could do some harm.

I still wouldn't vote for him though.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with with. Some of the most conservative and racist Americans I know have traveled extensively. Every time they come back to the US they tell us how is has reinforced their belief that America is the best country in the world. Conversely, some of the most open minded and liberal people I know have never left American soil.

And as for familial voting patterns, I find that not quite right as well, since it has been widely reported that many of the people voting for Trump have never voted before and that Trump has acted unlike any candidate in recent American history.

I'm not going to pretend that I know how to explain this whole Trump nonsense, because I honestly never thought he would get this far. But if you want my guess its that a load of racists have been sitting in their homes for the last 8 years getting themselves all riled up about a black President and this is their chance to speak up.

And his anti-immigration, nationalistic rhetoric should sound pretty familiar because it is not unique to America. We just do it in spectacularly fucked-up fashion. Instead of just continuously talking about how screwed up America is, we should be trying to stop this type of sentiment in the UK and across Europe (and yes, in the US as well) because it is an ideology that is becoming frighteningly popular.

I'm not sure whether to be more concerned about the bombastic, ridiculous, emotional Trump or the cold, calculating woman who leads the new far-right party in Germany and talks of shooting people without blinking an eye.

We in the West get a great deal of comfort from telling other people how civilised we are, yet it's only 70 years since millions were being murdered on mass for the same kind of irrational hatred that is being so recklessly brewed and encouraged by these people.

Its a matter of weak opposition. But this is only Republicans who seem to have taken a rightward lurch in recent years I Clinton wins the democratic nomination she will be president because all democrats will come out..its like our elections no one wants to speak up against a strong person with a loud following but you can vote against them.

actually that's a common misconception, the " British army" is the most powerful and most efficient army on the planet, 40,000 troops can be deployed into any country on the planet within 45mins, & we also have the most nukes. People think America is the richest most powerful country on the planet becuase America tells the world they are but they haven't been that since the mid 90's. This is what you get where there's not much impartial media(the opposite, most of it seems partisan to me)and a two year run up to the election where it seems like a race to obtain the most funding from interested parties to fund your drive(surely this should be capped).

WHich then leads you to be compromised to satisfy their special interests over the needs of the civilian population if you get elected.

Barking.

The most amazing thing for me is that we have all seen movies and shows where the president is some cripplingley flawed, power crazy ego maniac with emotional issues and no ability to fulfill his duty and and you watch it thinking "yeah, it's good for the plot but it's all a bit far fetched"

clearly not.

It's actually the intellectual idealist President, portrayed by Marine Sheen in The West Wing, that seems to be more of a fantasy I am afraid

".......actually that's a common misconception, the " British army" is the most powerful and most efficient army on the planet, 40,000 troops can be deployed into any country on the planet within 45mins, & we also have the most nukes. People think America is the richest most powerful country on the planet becuase America tells the world they are but they haven't been that since the mid 90's. Watched a whole thing about it 2weeks ago. "

I am assuming that is a "tongue firmly in cheek" comment.....?

It does however appeal to my infantile sense of humour to hear serious broadcasters saying trump

His support does seem to top out at about 40% amongst those voting in the primaries but this has never happened before so we'll have to see how it pans out.

I could understand the logic if he was a grassroots campaigner but he's not.

He's a rich New York liberal (in the sense that most of his past positions have been liberal).

Hillary needs to start calling him a Welfare Queen now!!!
