Seems to me people who obsess about spelling and grammar might suffer from a diminished understanding of the human condition and therefore find themselves with a limited ability to appreciate people for who they are rather than what they are,,

I believe the proof of my theory is they wont agree with my theory.........

I do notice errors and they annoy me, especially incorrect apostrophes (mothers mother's and greengrocers' apostrophes), but you leave yourself open to scrutiny yourself if you pick people up on

them ..and I'm not perfect, particularly with commas.

It's not like your brain can't cope with a slight error in grammar, if I can read something when my brain jumbled it up before it registers, then surely you won't die without proper use of an apostrophy or however you spell it

True.

But if you can use correct English in your daily diction and writing, it will identify the quality of your character immediately.

I think I am just conditioned as such, hence why I correct them.

More importantly when someone messages me saying 'your beautiful' it takes me a good while to figure out they meant 'you're' but I genuinely get confused with bad grammar.... I sit and think my beautiful what? Why is there an incomplete sentence?

Most of the times though I piece it together but like above .... I shouldn't have to. Get enough of that in my day job.

No - of course not - English is a wonderfully fluid, adaptive, co-optive language.

As you say, that of Shakespeare sounds stilted, that of Chaucer is almost unrecognisable, whilst before the Anglo-Saxons invented punctuation sentenceswerewrittenlikethis.

But there are modes of speech that are applicable to certain situations.

Getting the best out of a situation can be swung by correct English usage, although if I were talkin' to da yoot I'd adapt my speech accordingly.

Bah. To be pedandically pedantic. English doesn't even exist. It's a misnomer.

The natives of the Island(s)were Celts, and their language and culture was basically destroyed by the latin speaking Romans.

Then the Germans(notably the Saxons)came along, then the vikings with Norse, the the French with Norman French.

Basically our language is made up of loan words from other languages and then how those words themselves have been altered over time.

Standard English didn't really start emerging until the Fifteenth Century.

The point is, the 'language' is a mongrel contruct, and has always been changing, and will continue to do so.

Saying that, standards in standardisation need observing eh?

But who should make these rules...?

Back to prescriptive and descriptive use of English again..!

I'll get me coat.

Then eat, shoot, and leave.

"Bah.

Then eat, shoot, and leave."

You just proved that English does exist. You described how it came to exist.

Your argument that it doesn't l is like saying that bread does not exist because it is made of wheat, water, yeast and salt.

Also there were more than Celts when the Romans rocked up.

Wasn't meant to facetious or disassembling(even if it came across that way). My point is that a prescribed idea of what constitutes 'proper' Standard English is difficult to agree upon even by linguists, not to mention the people who actually use it. Throw in to the mix the was it has never stayed the same and...BOOM!

But yeah, I am a pedant myself as it happens.

Dunno about others being here with the Celts(you could well be right) before the Romans I'm just going by David Crystal.

But that's the joy of English - it's very flexible

I really don't see why you lot are still banging on with this..... I gave you the correct answer ages ago,,,,

But then again maybe I'm just to generous with my gifts of worldly wisdom...

Ok carry-on as you were..... you have my permission to continue your thinly veiled intention to engage in some same sex wrestling with one another where winner takes all...and the loser is left in a bedraggled state of smug satisfaction that can only result from pulling off a plan to fail .....

What was that about pulling off?

Nah. It's an interesting discussion.

Impossible to be resolvable too. Which makes it more interesting.

"It's what I tell my daughter - you can mangle the English language as much as you like, once you've learned to use it properly.

Do you know how complicated those that make the rules have made the English written word?

True.

But if you can use correct English in your daily diction and writing, it will identify the quality of your character immediately.

What if you don't want to be identified and judged? What if you change to suit your surroundings and people around you? Why does having learnt proper English make you more acceptable to society and have people looking down their noses at those who haven't? "

I'm going to test it out later

Grammar and spelling isn't the be all and end all. I'm not going to do a written sex exam, I'm going for more practicals instead.

Bravo. You're exactly right.

The fact that the majority of people these days have smart phones and tablets etc, means text speak belongs in the past. You gave a full qwerty keyboard, so use it!
