So we have bought a 2002 Saab to tide us over till we can get an engine rebuild done on our 207 gt. Anyway recently it will not start if you take it on say a 1 or 2 mile run. Leave it 4 or 5 hours and it starts. It's so confusing.

Is the air cleaner inlet hose system intact and as per the original........

if it has been modified in any way you may be getting carb icing......

The Saab specialist has checked this and the throttle body and checked the on board computer for faults . No faults recorded. He is perplexed.

It's the 2.0 ltr turbo. I thought it could be a bad earth but they have all been checked and cleaned.

Could be anything from heat sink problems to crank sensor. Crank sensor should come up on the computer. Is it a Vauxhall Saab?

Crank sensor would be first guess (presuming its the petrol). If its the 2ltr dti then check the butterfly valve operation in the intake manifold. Had this on an old signum and it would kill all power to the car, fixed it by removing the vacuum pipe and plugging the pipe with blu tac.

Crank sensor all clear. That us what we thought originally. It's an automatic. The nss has been checked and found to be working correctly.

find the fuel pump relay, jump wire it.. see if that works. Does it shut down when driving?

Does this happen randomly? Ie. Will start and run fine then refuses to start after a short run? Does the starter motor turn? If not check the starter motor is bolted on correctly as it earths to the engine block. Had one on a mondeo that was only secured with one bolt and it caused random failure to start unless helped with jump leads even though battery was brand new and fully charged.

Random failure to turn over is a different thing to failure to start.

Has the coolant temp sensor been checked for accuracy? that can cause similar issues.

Not starting randomly? Does the yellow spanner come on the dash and you lose all power then it refuses to restart? If so I have the fix

That's what I wanted to check, the OP mentioned having the earths checked which lead me to wonder if it is not starting or not cranking over.

Sounds like a starter motor not engaging but is hard to tell without listening to the noise (or lack of) when trying to crank. Ideally you need to check with a multimeter when cranking to make sure you are getting enough current to the starter. When it refuses to crank over, are you able to start it off jump leads?

Next time it refuses to crank, get someone to rest a piece of wood against the starter motor and tap the wood with a hammer. If it fires up then its the starter motor or earth to the starter. Not too expensive to put a new one on.

Done, hope it helps. I know it drove me mental for weeks until I got it fixed, Vauxhall wanted 4k to replace the entire intake side of engine. Cost me 5 pence to fix

as someone prev stated saab forum, if you type in fault in search engine you may have someone on the forum who has had the same problem
