"Write or email as opposed to phoning, make sure you keep all correspondence then you have evidence of it goes to court or appeal. The HRMC are understaffed and have a lot of poorly paid and poorly trained people on help lines. " flaming hell!.. Yea will start doing that. I did get a form where i had to write down why i hadn't complied and the advisor told me to ignore it and chuck it away. Thanks will do that

Thanks will do that" My other half had the same problem, his fines went back 8 or 9 years, they had changed his tax code to take back the money as well. I am a bookkeeper and dealt with it for him in the end. His fines were upto £6k !!!! I couldn't believe it! He phoned HMRC and then gave me authority to speak on his behalf! I was told to write to them, which I did. It does take a while to get a reply but they wiped out all his fines and had to give him some tax back and amend his tax code back. Don't worry it is sortable but just a major pain in the behind ![]()

"Do these people not listen?! An agency incorrectly put me forward as being a self employed contractor.. A job i never went for.. Now i get endless fine demands.. I have been onto these people countless times FFS . . It!s like the twilight fuckin zone with these people!" been trying to sort this out myself for a few years. Write everything with a proof of postage. Still arguing my case... Still getting told why haven't I filled in self assessments... Don't seem to understand the fact because I'm not self employed. ![]()

"My understanding is that ANYONE can be asked to fill in a Self Assessment form. I don't think its related to being Self Employed. I know lots of people that aren't that have to do them every year. When you fill out the form, it asks you if you're employed or self-employed, which suggests that HMRC themselves make no distinction between the two. Also, I wouldn't rely on advice from a forum (even mine!!), because it may not be correct & you'll still be liable for any fines incurred…after so many months they start charging £10 per day until you submit a form ![]() Yes you can be asked to fill in a self assessment form even if just employed. I have filled them out when an employee before, plus if you have any other incomes apart from your normal wages you should fill them out as standard I.e. rental income, capital gains, etc.
