What's more manly than a creature that offers affection on its own terms. Comes and goes as it pleases, pukes on your carpet then has a little Knapp. Wakes up and licks its dick. Certainly more manly then a dog dependent on its master for everything!

I think cats are perfect pets for people that like a somewhat independent animal. They're intelligent, affectionate, fun, easy care and will make you laugh and will understand you. Easier to get others to care for them, if you're out for a night etc, than a dog.

Cats are utterly adorable creatures - love em to bits (male) - had 3 rescue cats (one sadly had to be put to sleep a couple of weeks ago)- now got 2 and feed another 4 that come to the house for food - and a fox - and the birds - and 2 squirrels - yours - Dr Dolittle

Seriously - the best thing you can ever do BUT please get a cat that needs home from your local cat place or RSPCA

I got 2 persians and a ginger (strawberry blonde) tomcat, he is by far the most entertaining out of the lot! Thinks he is a dog, goes out on a lead, crys when I pit him to bed, and he is such a tart.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. I'm fact if you saw the recent tv programme on cats (can't remember when the next one is on at the mo) ' you would have learned that they are wild beasts who choose to live with us and are strong minded individuals. I love em and you'll be entertained and loved (probably cupboard love kind you lol) by them. You get back what you give and if you're an animal lover you won't regret it.

Please don't do the stereotypical thing and let him or her out at night though....keep them safe. Cats can quite happily live as house card and never go out...it may seem cruel but it keeps them safe and if played with they will be content, especially if they have a same age companion.

Since my house was built in 1952, it has had cats as residents virtually all the time. It`s only had one dog. My current cat Bracken is a rescue cat. She has learnt that we disapprove of her catching birds but are happy for her to catch rats, mice and rabbits, of which we get quite a few out here in the sticks. Love her to bits! Like one of the dogs next door but he will jump up on you, fine when you have working clothes on, his mother is on a "see food" diet and sometimes comes into the garden to shit! Next door is a lurcher that if it had two brain cells it would be dangerous and a terrier that will nip your hand if you try to pet it! Cats all te way for me!

I had a big beautiful Maine Coon for just over 18 lovely years. ..she had health problems but was a lovely soft and loyal friend. I still miss her. If this is your first cat can I suggest a rescue cat from the Cats Protection League who is a hardy moggy may suit you best. You'll also get a health checked, micro chipped get and a voucher to have them spayed or castrated (a very good idea...in fact essential).

I got a diabetic rescue cat, and just inherited my nans 19yr old cat. Tho its currently the 14 yr old terrier who was also my nans that's asleep on my lap.

With my lot the place always had 4 litter trays, and emptied as soon as it was used, cleaned and fresh litter in.... no horrible smells as I had scented candles

Echo the grumpy fuzzy cat has owned me for 7 years.

We've been together through thick and thin and he's been one of the few constants in my life. He's had 2 "mums", moved 5 times, and has witnessed me get up to all sorts with all sorts in all sorts of states of sobriety

No wonder he's a grump, but he's my grump and I love him and he loves me

Crazy cat man here,just about as crazy as my new kitty,she's 5 months old n I've had her for the last two as my mum couldn't deal with her stalking n attacking her any longer!If I hadn't took her my mum would've got rid of her anyway.

It's awesome having a crazy attack cat Hours of fun play fighting with each other n it's totally worth all the scratches!

Another reason I love cats......never seen a police cat!

I strongly disagree with keeping them permanently inside.

It seems cruel because it is cruel. Akin to keeping a bird in a cage.

If I let Echo outside, he wouldn't last a day. Same thing with any house cat. That would be cruel.

I take him out to the front garden whenever the weather is ok (and when he can be arsed to) for fresh air and a bit of a wander, but he's scared of the outside. If someone walks down the pavement on the other side of the road, he runs back and hides behind me.

House cats are very comfortable and happy in their own environment, just like an outdoor cat would be happy in their outdoor environment. They are creatures of habit, who like what they know, and stay away from what they don't.

Letting my cats out would be cruel.

They are pedigree and were bred for their looks not their common sense. They don't have the survival instincts required to be safe outside.

They are safe and absolutely content as house cats.

Why do you think cats are playful? Cover their business when they're done? Clean themselves so much? Chase toys? Sharpen their claws? Spray? Hiss? Etc, etc...

These are all natural survival instincts. They are not learned, just like they cannot be "bred out". That's the definition of the word.

You should definitely show your cats a bit more respect

If he asks to go out then he potters about in the garden and comes straight back in

He is 15 now bless him

Cats are outdoor creatures but I can understand someone owning a show cat wanting to protect them

"The stereotypical thing?" What a crock of shit. Some cats are not suited to going out and will be perfectly happy indoors. For others it's far more cruel to deny them their basic nature and instinct and keep them indoors.

I've had my rescue cats since they were 6 weeks old and they were always dying to go outside before they even knew what it was. I tried to keep them in for 3 weeks when I moved house and managed 5 days before they were miserable as fuck and I had to let them out. They get more exercise and are much healthier because they go out. They are safe and much happier. There are inevitably more risks if they go out, but it's like having a child and saying you'll never allow them to leave the house because it's not safe.

I think cats are really pretty but I wouldn't own one. I've always preferred dogs as I enjoy the companionship and interaction with a dog, walking a dog along a quiet beach is one of life's luxuries to me. You can't get that level of interaction with a cat.

I do think the hautiness of cats is appealing and the no nonsense, independant attitude, but the scratching and sharpening claws on furniture, the spraying to mark territory etc puts me off wanting to live with one.

You misunderstood what I was saying....I said don't let them out at night - I didn't say don't let them out full stop! As you say different cats do different things and I'm all for letting them develop their own characters and despite me being surrounded by fields I have one cat who won't cross the threshold no matter what but is super confident inside the house. The reason I like the cats in at night is to reduce the risk of injury or death from foxes, other cats or the two legged vermin called poachers. I get what you're saying but I know very well the nightime hazards which lurk. I also know that there are people in towns and villages who categorically hate cats and will use air rifles and so on using darkness and lack of other people around to harm them. I hope that clears up what I said.

Bracken has one piece of furniture she`s allowed to claw - a wicker log basket! She did start to claw a chair but we solved that by moving the throw we put over the chair to save the cat fur!

Thankfully, being a female means she doesn`t scent mark, unlike one of her predesessors who once sprayed the Xmas tree!

I'm sure you can buy stuff from online hunting stores that mimics the scent of various predators though I have no clue if the smell would be too much for you to 'bear' or if you could use such a small amount it would only be sniffed out by your cats nose or not.

I bet some of the other posters on this thread have a lot more sensible n non predator piss related solutions to your problem though lol.

I'm pretty lucky with mine... I've always been a dog person (technically I'm an animal person generally) but I can't have a dog cause I work full time.

I rescued my kitty a year ago and she's more like a dog in personality. She's not destroyed any of my furniture. She follows me round like a dog does, runs to the door when the buzzer goes, steals the mail when the postie delivers, likes a full on tummy/back rub like a dog does and comes running from the other side of the room if I pick up her brush. She'd let me brush her all day long and if I stop and she's not finished with me, she puts her paws round the brush and pulls it over her head.

I get a full blown welcome when I come home from work and she throws herself at my feet for a tummy rub.

Anytime her paws hit my skin, her claws retract immediately and even when I fight her to get her into her pet carrier for the vet visit, there's not been so much as a scratch.

I'm super lucky cause I totally scored with her. I've never met a cat like it. She shows very little signs of normal cat behaviour which suits me just fine. We have a mutual adoration thing going on.

I think it's a little bit luck to be honest, mine don't scratch much in the house at all, but my mum's cat is a shocker for clawing the carpets. Mine have annihilated a fence post in the garden though. Spraying doesn't tend to be a big issue with neutered cats.

My stress and furniture are completly scratched, but I have 5 cats its there home, I cover them up with throws they have their own settee and the dining room is dedicated to them and that's generally where they are. But it's to be expected of 5.

Fancy swapping . No ours is a really good cat actually apart from not being able to leave her that much for fear of my furniture being wrecked. She lies on her back as if she wants her tummy rubbing,but when you do she doesn't like it,she has learned to be gentle though.

How about keeping a spray bottle of water handy when you're home,when my cat's up to its nonsense I blast it in the face with a skoosh of the wet stuff n she hates it! I just need to aim the bottle at her now n she bolts for cover....although this only works if you're home.

Cats eh...they do what they want!
