"MLOC being the MIDDLE LANE OWNERS CLUB. These people should have been drowned at birth to save a lot of frustration they impose on people day in and day out who use the motorway network. I truley feel sorry for people who use the motorways as there job. I approached a car this morning on the M56. I was travelling at 75ish on the inside lane then had to adjust my speed to 50 to stay behing them. I sat there for about a mile cussing them. then I drew alongside and stared at them. they never even looked. please these people either learn to drive or better still catch a bus. rant over!" No sympathy I'm afraid. If you were doing 75 them you were speeding and have no right to complain as what you were doing was illegal. The middle lane driver was just being inconsiderate.

Yep if people actually understood the rules of motorway driving such as the middle and and outside lanes are overtaking lanes and you return to lane if possible after overtaking it would cut down on a lot of congestion. mildly irks me someone wouldnt pull over 5 miles down i overtook them on the inside (the middle lane) and they had the cheek to to gesticulate i was wanker,, i could well be but rather that than an ignorant one

" By that reply I guess you dont drive on motorways that much!! incidentally an indicated 75 mph on any motor car speedometer is usually a good 10% inaccurate and overreads. so the true speed is +/- 70 mph so you will find I wasnt speeding afterall. And the other driver is still inconsiderate!" Unfortunately stating that all speedos are 10% out won't get you off a speeding fine in a court of law.....

" True, but if he was driving at 75 based on his speedo reading, then he'd not be up in court anyway as he wouldn't be caught by the traffic cops for speeding.

"So you are saying that ALL speedos in cars (apart from police cars) are innacurate....or COULD be?" Unless it's been modified to be accurate, then this is indeed the case.

The National speed limit ON MOTORWAYS was introduced somwhere in the early 19th centuary when there was not a lot of cars about and they were made of tin foil. A centuary on all cars are manufactured to travel nearly around double the national speed limit and car safety has improved greatly better constructed to absorb impact airbags etc. there has been many motoring official meetings by people with clipboards and pens about actually increasing the speed limit to 90mph. However if the government and police agreed to this they would seriously reduce the amount of money they take of us in fines, so i feel the only reason that motorway speed limit has not been increased is beause the authorities would simply be kissing goodby to a nice lil stealth tax fund raiser. Hear about mr Bloggs who got caught doing 72 in a 70 limit who lost his job and his family....Always those that believe what a thouroughly distgusting individual he was deserved everything he got for being a criminal ? Other thing why police love "speedsters" without them there crime detection figures would probably fall dramatically, heaven forbid they should have to go out and catch real criminals.

The reason I dont speed is that it was a speeding motorway driver that almost killed me and my kids a few years ago. Don't see the point in getting wound up about people that travel in the middle lane. Far more important things to worry about. Time more people took a chill pill about these things.

" I think you mean 20th century, not 19th The trouble with this argument is that increasing the speed limit would have to apply to all drivers irrespective of what car they drive. So although today's cars are capable of driving - and more importantly stopping - at speeds in excess of 70mph, there are plenty of cars which are older and not as technically advanced, but would still benefit from such a change in the law.

"Fookin hate every single one of them. 5 days a week they cause me no end of misery and frustration. They are so oblivious to everything around them. Four lane stretches of motorways... don't get me started on that one. I just wish it was perfectly legal to undertake on the inside lane. Roll on 80mph past with everyone on my right hand side " I had an excellent solution to this problem which i actually spoke to my local Police force about. These people are, in essence, muppets. There's no point in trying to educate them, or get them to change their behaviour. They will take the view that 'I'm doing the legal limit' or 'I'll need to overtake that truck on the horizon in the next ten minutes' or they neither know nor care that you are behind them. These are the same people who use the motorway once a year and reckon the problem is that there are too many trucks on the road which 'sit right on my bumper' but are oblivious to the fact that trucks are speed limited to 56mph and as such they, not the trucks are the problem. Anyway, the solution I proposed to the local constabulary was that rather than getting all hot and bothered about them or trying to get them to see sense, I would simply pull them over to the side of the road and shoot them in the head. One shot, a clean, quick and painless death and one less wanker in the world. The fact that this would have both social and environmental benefits - fewer muppets using fewer resources, plus reversing the slowdown of Darwinian natural selection caused by universal healthcare/advances in medicine etc can only be a good thing for all of us in the long run - would be an unintentional but desirable by product of my idea. Anyway, the local Police listened politely enough to my suggestion, but were MOST emphatic that there were NO circumstances under which I should put my plan into action, even on a 'trial' basis. So now, I undertake the cunts. Every day. Fuck 'em.

" The 70 Mph speed limit on motorways wasn't brought into until December 1965 though was it?, at first as a temporary measure on a trial basis...which then was written up in law.

" ......... What i do want to know though is it true that what your speedo says isnt necessarily true? And is a sat nav a true indication of the speed you are going?" Speedometers almost invariably show a higher speed than the vehicle is travelling at. Don't put any faith at all in any speed indicated on a sat-nav.

"To be fair, i give up on this lol, sometimes i cruise in the middle lane but only if i am overtaking someone, i then toddle off to the slow lane. ................." It isn't a slow lane - it's lane 1. The speed limit there is the same as the other two lanes and the hard shoulder.

I didnt say it was, i just wanted to show that i dont hang around in the middle lane. Yep, speedos are not a true reflection of your actual speed. You can test it yourself next time you're on the motorway by driving for 15 minutes at exactly 70mph on your speedo... your mileage should be 17½ miles more than it was at the start - but it won't be. Satnavs are slightly more reliable but they're not exact because it's based on your position being calculated against 3 satellites, and they're not so accurate that it can pinpoint exactly where you are, they're usually good to within a few metres, but for calculating your speed a few metres can make a big difference.

"so what you are saying then, if his speedo said 80 mph, thats more likely what he was doing " If his speedo said 80 then he was actually doing just over 70, probably nearer 72 or 73 as generally they tend to over state by approximately 10%.

"well i got done clocked at 74mph so i disagree with the 10% above or under or then again maybe i am just unlucky. I had the "pleasure" of sitting through the driver awareness course rather than take the points, where myself and other despicable motoring criminals were lectured to about the evils of speeding and how it kills, i mentioned surely its just a stealth tax, and that it was highly probable that drink drivers kill more people than speeding ones. The grey man put on his stats hat and said no my statement was incorrect to which i said how could you put a percentage on the two, speed cameras can not exactly pull over suspected drink drivers and breathalyse them can they. Five minutes later i was kindly escorted from the premises and informed i had failed my driver awareness course i didnt know it was an exam ??? i ended up copping 3 points. "Why didnt you just use the outside lane to overtake " Perhaps there was someone fast approaching in the outside lane, thereby stopping him from doing that. I've had this happen to me. I've been driving in the inside lane and caught up with someone in the middle lane. Not wanting to undertake them, I move into the middle lane, but then see someone zooming along the outside lane. I'd then have to brake because otherwise I'd either cause a crash with the person in the outside lane, or go into the back of the person hogging the middle lane. Section 138 of the Highway Code states clearly what you're supposed to do: "On a three-lane dual carriageway, you may use the middle lane or the right-hand lane to overtake but return to the middle and then the left-hand lane when it is safe." Hogging the middle lane is dangerous as it causes accidents.
