It's been a while since I mentioned them but 6 years ago today I lost 1 of best friends.

Good thread OP - really sorry to hear about your friend.

I was very surprised recently to learn one of my friends who works in the medical profession had never had a smear. She was scared of infection from the medical instruments - it's all disposable now . So she's finally going to have one done.

Thought I'd bump this. Got my letter today to say everything is normal.

And how times have changed in 3 years it took less than two minutes never felt a thing just the swab running over my cervix.

Good news is now I'm an old fart only have to have them every five years.

So go ladies it really is nothing these days.

I'm glad to see that this has been bumped again xxx

I was very lucky, I had my 1st smear at 19 but was diagnosed with pre-cancerous cells. I dread to think of what might have happened if I'd had to wait until I was 25 (if I'd made it that far!!) I've received 6 monthly smears until 2014 when I got my very 1st completely normal result

I decided to have a hysterectomy after many years of problems. Got high risk HPV cells on the cervix. That was the last straw. Feel great knowing that potential killer is gone.

I am back to every 3 years after 10 years of annual ones. I hate it. I would have been due it this month and feel so angry that I'm not getting one. Rant over but off to the corner for a quiet sob

Me too. I had a period of having abnormal cells so when I had the womb and ovaries taken I opted to have the cervix taken too.

It's brilliant that they now have the vaccine given to girls in secondary school. Gardasil protects against the two types of HPV, between them responsible for more than 70% of cervical cancers in the UK. A bonus of using Gardasil to prevent cervical cancer is that it prevents genital warts too.

Smear tests are still needed though as 30% of types of cervical cancers aren't vaccinated against.

They can especially if there's an issue. This isn't a smear for screening, it'd be a diagnostic one.

The GUM clinic can examine this as well as the STI tests. If your doctor is pushing you to go there, maybe you should? May speed things up for you.

Many GP surgeries have doctors who specialise - if you can, ring and get the gynaecological one.

I get very upset/angry/annoyed when I hear people dont/won't get a smear test.

It wasn't till it was to late that I found out my mum had missed a smear, she passed away in October last year of stage 3 cervical cancer. Its been the worst 18months of my life and I still can't believe she's gone. A simple quick test could of saved her life. I'm angry at her for not having it.

It's likely that it's not anything sinister. Your GP in this circumstance would be unlikely to smear but refer to colposcopy (gyne at hospital/clinic) where they will look into the cause.

I've had a potted history with post coital bleeding, irregular bleeding, pre - cancerous cells etc. All the occasions of bleeding have been down to either eroded cervix or damage to my now scarred cervix. The pre - cancerous cells had no symptoms. All my issues are dealt with by the same doctors in the same clinic so it's that referral you need. Smear is just a test that the GP have little choice in who they invite for one that ultimately just get you to that referral point. Don't worry about that smear but do be clear on wanting that referral. All instances of post coital bleeding should be investigated.

Not sure how good your GUM clinic is but when I've wanted a good chat and check over I've booked with the Dr there to have a proper look. They can't do the referrals in our area but did put my mind at rest with the last lot of post coital bleeds. They have longer appt slots and the correct equipment. I have the security blanket of annual testing smears though due to my history.

Near enough

I had an 'abnormal' smear in March this year, had to go and have further investigations, especially as my mum (who passed away in 2009 of ovarian cancer) had had many gynae problems over the years. I had to have 3 biopsies done and just wait for the results.

I finally got my letter this week...all clear, for now. Back in 12 months time to do it all again, I'd rather go through the 5 minutes of awkward/uncomfortable than have to go through what my mum did.

Don't EVER put off a smear test!!

Then as I and others have said, try your GUM clinic but don't cancel your GP one until you know how far they can progress things. It sounds like different health trusts allow different referral routes. Mine don't allow referral to colposcopy from GUM only from GP.

Also would you not be able to get GP cancellation appt? Not wanting to turn the thread into a GP appt rant though, just suggesting possible solutions.

My aunt missed a few smears had loads of signs and symptoms that something was wrong but still refused to go and get a smear done for months. When she finaly went it was already to late the cancer had spread to far. She has been gone 5 years now.

I always get mine done and anyone under 25 who thinks there's an issue should go to a doctor and not leave untill one has been agreed. It's a few minutes of your time, it's not embarrassing they see it all the time and it's not that uncomfortable either.

Marie Stopes offer them to under 25's. If you go private it looks to be @£200.

GUM do them but might not offer to under 25's - might be worth a visit to the family planning clinic to see what they say???

If you have excessive/prolonged bleeding I would expect your GP to investigate further do another GP at the practise sounds like a good idea. Stand your ground, do not let them fob you off. I had to get my dad to fight for my treatment xx

They are horribly important.....

Due to these and my annual hysteroscopy I'm due to have a hysterectomy. Was supposed to have it in March but bless our NHS it didn't happen.... Instead they did a quick fix and removed cells and are taking it all out in August

Get them done ladies x

Ive never had a smear test

I woudlnt take treatment if i did have cancer that a dissision i made many years ago for person reasons so i dont see the point taking tests for it when somebody who would take treatment could be using that appointment

I can only thank our lucky stars that Mrs Lust never misses her smear tests. Pre cancerous cells were found 2 years ago but treated and cleared. Waiting for the "all clear" was the worst time of our lives. I just could not function at all

Thought I'd give this a bump as I searched the forums to look for advice to try and stop my worrying.. My results have come back from my first ever smear test and I have abnormal cells. High grade (severe) dyskaryosis is what they have found and they need to see me ASAP for a colposcopy.. Not gonna lie, I'm scared. Seeing the cancer research logo has shit me up, although i'm sure it can be sorted out before it gets worse... Time will tell as I had my appointment through for in 6 days time.. I wish the age for smears was lower than 25 (you get invited a few months before your 25th birthday). It just doesn't seem right.. Please please please go and get checked though ladies!! Tell your daughters, sisters, mums, friends. It's so important xx

I'm also due a colposcopy as my latest smear came back abnormal. Easier said than done but try not to panic. Lots of really helpful information on Jo's cervical cancer website. Not just for those with cancer but also abnormal cells. There is a wealth of information and support there. It made me feel more at ease about it and I have had a loop excision of the cervix previously.

Lots of us ladies have abnormal cells/colposcopy it's more common than people think.

Anyhow, good luck and positive vibes coming your way.

JG thank you again for starting these threads.

Ladies get your smears please.

I've also never had a smear test due to personal reasons which I'm now getting over. I plan on having one done this year with the help and understanding of my brilliant doctor.

I stopped them sending me reminders as it distressed me.

Dignosed mullerian carcinoma in 2000 I was 20 years old. Took 2 years for diagnosis because of my age and the fact it is extremely rare.

Go for your smears. It may save your life for the sake of 2 minutes of being uncomfortable.

Hate the bloody things, so uncomfortable but I always go. Had an ectopic pregnancy years ago and found out I had a 14cm cyst on my ovaries, had a mass operation, left me not being able to have anymore children and a blocked tube one side and half a tube the other, learnt to live with it now but you never know what's happening inside. Excellent thread.

I always attend my smear tests. In fact I surprised my GP last time by contacting them as I was concerned I hadn't had a reminder.

My mum had abnormal cells removed following a smear test in her 40s, I would hate anything to get missed.

These days it takes seconds and is not at all uncomfortable.

Going for mine on Tuesday. It's a routine one but unfortunately I had an inconclusive ultrasound recently and being referred to gynae. So now results of smear will help with diagnosis at the next internal ultrasound.

I've never missed a smear and had them since I was about 18. Think 25 is quite late to start getting them.

Hope all goes well.

And you're right, 25 is a ridiculous age to start getting them. But it seems unless you have obvious symptoms of something not being right (or if you have kids I think), you don't get invited for smears. I've previously asked for one and was refused on several occasions as there wasn't a 'reason' to have one done.. I even went earlier on this year when I went for a regular STI check, mentioned that I had a letter from the NHS to tell me my smear was coming up and to expect an invitation, and she still refused to do it as it wasn't the letter from my doctors INVITING me for one. (They send a letter to tell you you're getting a letter)

Never mind eh, it's done now. - that turned into a bit of a rant sorry

It's usually nothing too much to worry about so please don't panic. It's often just cells that they laser off in less than an hour.

Try and look at the positive that you went for it and whatever the problem is can now be dealt with xx

I had the LLETZ (laser removal) 4 weeks ago - so can have sex again now yay!! Haha.. For those of you that are nervous.. It didn't hurt and was only slightly uncomfortable when injecting the local anaesthetic. I was very nervous too. And nothing anybody told me made me feel any less nervous, so I don't even expect this to help any of you! I cried when I went in and I nearly threw up when I saw my insides on the screen!! Lol. But all in all I was imagining a lot worse than what it actually was. I think we all do..

However, the results from that came back last week that I have stage 1 cervical cancer. So I need to go for further surgery, this time under general anaesthetic, on Tuesday to remove more of my cervix. 4-6 more weeks of no sex. so you know what I'll be doing this weekend!!! Lol...

Joking aside... - My health is the most important thing. Still feels a bit surreal that I have 'cancer' - even if it is just stage 1 (which is nothing compared to stage 4 terminal!!)

I'm just so very lucky that it was caught so early!! Smear tests are so important ladies!! Xxx

All the posts above this to may last post are all good and I love that - keeping on top of your smears is important and this just shows it.

I have had abnormal smears, laser/cheesewire removal of cells, many hysteroscopies and biopsies done and now whole hog and a hysterectomy as well as diagnosed with ademyosis - if anyone is ever concerned and want my opinion on any of these things (what to expect etc) please feel free to message me as I know they can be a huge concern. I am no doctor and can only tell from my experiences but understand it helps to talk x

"I had the LLETZ (laser removal) 4 weeks ago - so can have sex again now yay!!

Xxx

you're only 24!! I'm 38 and only going for my first ever smear in October..

Glad they caught yours in early stages..virtual hugs. X"

Going is the first step. Regardless of the age that you're going for your first smear, you should be proud of yourself for making the move!!

Thanks for the hugs - I need them I think I've got such an understanding family and my boyfriend has been the best though.. Really hoping your result comes back clear x

It definitely helps to talk.. Seems you've been through it all though. Bless you The one thing I feel so comfortable with is the fact that the docs have said I'll be under close examination over the next 10 years or so.. And I'll have so much support if and when I decide to have children. The NHS gets slated for quite a lot, and I do think smears should be made available as routine to Under 25s, but other than that I can't really fault anything else as I've been treated like a VIP. In the space of 6-7 weeks I'd of had the smear, the results, had the LLETZ, the results and had the cold knife cone biopsy too.. Madness!

If you can convince them into a vaginal or at least laprascopic hysterectomy, then do.

The healing times are much better!!! I've seen people in for surgery same time as me up n running whilst I'm still virtually crawling

Hi, I've been offered a hysterectomy after years of problems. There is one question I could not bring myself to ask the male consultant - How does having a hysterectomy affect your sex life.

He said its key hole surgery, not sure wether it's best to have the lot removed & be done with It or partial. I'd love to hear from you & your experience, or any other ladies....Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I would suggest joining several hysterectomy groups on facebook - you can learn a lot on there from ladies that have been through it and are in the midst of going through it.

With regards to sex life I am not sure yet from personal side as I am only 5 weeks post op.... I am told you eventually are back to normal though and many seem to enjoy it more. Search hysterectomy threads in here too as seen a fair few

Personally I would keep your ovaries (most surgeons decide for you in all honesty) as if not you will need HRT and its a higher risk of osteoporosis as well if you lose your ovaries, as well as a few other things....

If you want a chat you are welcome to PM x

It was unsuccessful..I had to put the speculum in myself due to psychological problems caused by doctors when I was young..then she said I have thrush (an ongoing problem due to long term antibiotics) and my cervix is pointing in a funny position. So I have to go back next week. ffs!

My cervix is on a tilt too but my nurse is always great doing my smears. I put my feet together by the sole and drop my knees down, relax (as much as possible) and it's done in around a minute. I remember being scared the first time but then wondered what I'd been worried about afterwards.

Try not to worry x

Mine was also on a funny angle and cause I am tall I needed a long (green) speculum. A pillow under your bum may help too.

Good luck for next week lovely x

Dodgy angle cervix here too!! I'm in the purple crew

Had my cone biopsy 2 weeks ago.. feeling fan-bloody-tastic now!!

Well done to all you ladies going for smears.. I literally cried the other day when a woman told me she wasn't going to go for one. I get that it's personal choice but the fact that I kept asking for years and they refused Coz of my age if upset me that someone would refuse one given the choice.. Never mind eh, I'm all bloody emotional at the minute haha!

Chucking my two pence worth in here, I'm currently on a waiting list for a hysterectomy. Hopefully laparoscopic but we'll see when it happens.

For the last 5 years almost, I've suffered with DUB, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, to the point where this time 4 weeks ago I had three units of blood transfused as my HB was 72!

No-one seems to know why but coupled with a fibroid, terrible pains & a history of cervical cancer, I'm finally getting what I've been asking for for 2 years!

Had all the tests for cervical/ovarian cancer but always come back clear. Also had the mini touch ablation just before Christmas which didn't help!

If you feel like something is wrong, don't hesitate to get checked & persevere if you're not happy!

It's your body and you only get one go in it!

Good luck to all waiting for results, be brave like the awesome woman you are

I had a smear test recently and ,as usual, was told i would get the result via post. Several weeks after it i hadnt recieved the letter and because we often have problems with the post i decided to phone the docs for the result. The person i spoke to said i would only get a letter if i needed treatment etc which is different to what the nurse said. The person i spoke to didnt want to look at see if they had the result. I insisted she looked. She did eventually and thankfully my result was ok. However if anyone had a problem and believed they would only get a letter if there was a problem and the letter got lost then their treatment would be delayed. Im thankful i phoned and insisted she look for the result.
