The Royal Family - drain or an asset?

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have released a series of photographs of their trip to the French Alps - their first family holiday since the birth of Princess Charlotte.

I imagine it's cost a lot of money to provide security whilst they're away. And many see the Royal Family generally as a drain financially.

I think they are a major draw for our tourism and don't particularly want to lose them.

Your thoughts ?

I kinda veer from totally disestablish them and let them keep their, I dunno, top 10 castles... to stick 'em up against a wall and have done with them as an affront to democracy.

I just can't decide

The British public - drain or an asset to the Royal Family?

Definitely an asset

The British don't do revolution (apart from suffer crypto -Judeo-Marxist ones by the State) so we're stuck with them for a very long time.

"Thin em out a bit and get them working. if the profit from having them outweighs the cost then keep them. "

They certainly can support themselves:

The Civil List was abolished in 2010 and replaced with the Sovereign Grant Act 2011.

This provides them with £43m of State money in 2016/17 (and that's an inflation-busting 7% increase on the previous year's).

However...

The Crown Estate is a statutory corporation, run on commercial lines by the Crown Estate Commissioners and generates revenue for HM Treasury every year (an income surplus of £210.7 million for the year ended 31 March 2010).

The Queen and the Prince of Wales also receive private income through the Duchy of Lancaster and Duchy of Cornwall.[12] The Sovereign Grant only accounts for a small part of the total cost of running the monarchy, which is approximately £300?million annually.

They ain't short for cash.

Not really a drain if they only cost us 30p a year.

I just don't understand why they're entitled to all that luxury and crowns and shit like that. Just seems weird anyone would be.

Plus if they really do make a profit i don;t see why we're subsidising them, but finance has never made any sense to me.

I don't mind them as people, but I believe in people getting on based on merit.

For that reason, I loathe the institution and the ridiculous deference to people who are no better than you or I.

I wouldn't bow in front of them - I rather bow down in front of the guy or gal who works hard for not much and who volunteers for a homeless charity in their spare time.

I used to have a friend who's cousin was Post Master at Buck House. My friend was occasionally invited to garden parties out the back.

When the Royals came out they were surrounded by a ring of courtiers holding ribbon, and this bubble moved through the crowd occasionally stopping to let some favoured person in.

Imagine living inside that goldfish bowl.

I pity them.

do you think prince William is having a free ride, new doing exactly the same as any married father of two going out to work, only taking so much paternity leave. When asked if he found it hard to leave two young children to go to work his reply was yes, must like everyone else. That's what he said.

Hmm.Only £334 million for their annual upkeep(it is a time of austerity after all), or 15,000 new nurses?

Hard one to get your head around.

Also, Windsor Castle is only the 24th most popular tourist attraction, Chester Zoo is more popular.

Not that I'm trying to draw an analogy between a zoo and the royal family mind.

Tampongate

When you see pictures of Charles and Camilla at official functions, you might not be able to forget the details of "Camillagate," aka "tampongate." As they carried on a romantic relationship from the 1970s and into their marriages to other people, a flirty conversation between Camilla and Charles was caught on tape and published in 1992. The tapes included an exchange in which Charles said he wanted to be Camilla's tampon:

Charles: "Oh god. I'll just live inside your trousers or something. It would be much easier!"

Camilla: (Laughs.) "What are you going to turn into, a pair of knickers?" (Both laugh). "Oh, you're going to come back as a pair of knickers."

Charles: "Or, God forbid, a Tampax. Just my luck!" (Laughs.)

Camilla: "You are a complete idiot!" (Laughs.) "Oh, what a wonderful idea!"

Needless to say, it was embarrassing for Princess Diana and the royal family, as well as Charles and Camilla.

Sisterly Love

Princess Diana met her future husband, Prince Charles, at the age of 16 — when he was dating her older sister! You would think his prior romance with a Spencer sister would raise eyebrows, but after his royal relatives' penchant for divorcés, Charles found a socially suitable bride in the noble, virginal, and English Diana as per his father's wishes.

She might come from commoners, but Kate has at least one scandal-prone family member. Look at her millionaire property-developer uncle Gary Goldsmith, who brought his second of three ex-wives to the royal wedding at Kate's request. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

Prince Philip has been Queen Elizabeth's quiet rock of support for more than 60 years. Quiet because, when he speaks, he's been known to resort to ethnic slurs and stereotypes.

Like asking Australian Aborigine leaders, "Do you still throw spears at each other?"

Or asking a Scottish driving teacher, "How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to get them through the test?"

Or asking how a British student traveling in Papua New Guinea had avoided being eaten by the locals.

To the President of Nigeria, who was in national dress, in 2003: “You look like you’re ready for bed!”

To Lockerbie residents after plane bombing, 1993: “People say after a fire it’s water damage that’s the worst. We’re still drying out Windsor Castle.”

To then Paraguay dictator General Stroessner: “It’s a pleasure to be in a country that isn’t ruled by its people.”

At Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme, 2006. “Young people are the same as they always were. Just as ignorant.”

Ad nauseam...

My fav Prince Phil moment was when he was on tour of Bolivia and poked fun at a Bolivian admiral (Bolivia is a landlocked country), "I suppose you got those medals for sailing about on that lake of yours?" asked the prince.

The admiral shot back: "At least I did not get mine for marrying my wife!"

I'm not concerned about what they say and get up to really. It's the fact people show deference to them.

I like William and Harry - decent enough blokes. Would have a pint with them. Completely unexceptional people though. Yes, they served their country, but so did Neil I went to school with.

I've spent my working life in education, helping people who grew up with nothing and who are generally desperate to get on in life and access opportunities. I just can't square that with seeing such deeply average people at the top of of the pile. Edward got into Cambridge/

Oxford with a D and E at A-Level. I wish my students had that chance - much more deserving.

The Frenxh had the right idea - and way more Peoole visit Versailles than Buck House, so they're doing the "royal tourism" thing better too

Hard one to get your head around.

Also, Windsor Castle is only the 24th most popular tourist attraction, Chester Zoo is more popular.

Not that I'm trying to draw an analogy between a zoo and the royal family mind."

Not surprising really, it's pretty expensive & not that exciting for families.

If you sold off everything, got rid of the hundreds of hangers-on relations, kept Buckingham palace as the core attraction and the core royals as the staff. They still get paid a fuck off huge salary so they can still each buy and maintain a nice big quiet house and do their charity work, but are stripped of legal, military and constitutional powers; would they still be effective as a tourist attraction?

Of course there's criticism of the families history. But look at British history in general and it's full of scandals and atrocities in every class or walk of life. People love to label things in order to point the accusatory finger. I have seen them do a lot of good despite them being quirky and different from the average Joe public.

Ask yourself what have they done that's caused a negative effect on your own life?

Just go to the royal gov website and take a look at the Queen's Working Day

For example, the Queen had nearly 400 official engagements in 2014, not bad for a then 88 year old

The Queen is quite understandably held in high public affection.

But that does not mean that we should not debate the serious constitutional issue of whether it is right that in the 21st century we continue to select our head of state by accident of birth rather than by universal suffrage.

This is not some minor issue.

Through royal prerogative, powers are exercised by the prime minister on behalf of the monarch with absolutely no oversight or scrutiny from parliament.

Perhaps the most insidious of these is the ability it gives a prime minister to pack the unelected House of Lords with his stooges, a practice that has always gone on but which has been taken to new extremes by David Cameron.

Members of parliament were quite rightly lambasted in the media when details of abuses of expenses were revealed. Yet we don't hear a peep from the Daily Mail about extravagant royal expenses.

To quote Ian Davidson MP, a former member of the public accounts committee, "every time we examined royal finances we found extravagance and indulgence as well as abuse of expenses by junior royals".

Uh huh...

It is well known that Prince Charles uses his position to lobby ministers, in particular when it comes to his pet issues of architecture and homeopathic medicine.

Yet ministers have vetoed all attempts to bring correspondence between Charles and ministers to light.

This is hardly transparent government.

Prince William

William sat for the entrance exam to Eton College and was admitted. There, he studied Geography, Biology and History of Art at A-Level, obtaining an 'A' in Geography, a 'C' in Biology and a 'B' in History of Art.

By 2001, William was back in the United Kingdom and had enrolled, under the name William Wales, at the University of St Andrews.

He embarked on a degree course in Art History, later changing his main subject to Geography, and going on to earn a Scottish Master of Arts degree with upper second class honours.

.

Prince Harry

In June 2003, Harry completed his education at Eton with two A-Levels,[14] (achieving a grade B in art and D in geography) having decided to drop history of art after AS level.

He excelled in sports, particularly polo and rugby union.

Passing two A-levels, Harry was eligible to apply for an officer commission in the British Army.

That is always the argument, isn't it Shag?

We can measure how much we provide to the Royals in subsidies.

We cannot measure how much they bring in via tourism, can we? What do you ask a tourist? Would you have come here if we did not provide a subsidy to the Queen? How many tourists have been asked? How much money brought in by tourists influenced by the presence of the royals has been diverted to foreign companies?

I say, don't abolish them. But don't pay them.

Yes, Versailles is more about image, power and propaganda in the age of absolute monarchy.

Our royal family have, since the Glorious Revolution of 1688, been constitutional monarchs and have had the sense to keep it relatively modest (but if you doubt the scale of their wealth just look at the Royal Collection).

"France's former royal sites bring in more tourists than our royal sites - lets follow their example.

Although, to be fair, France's former royal sites are miles, miles better than any of "ours". Versailles makes Windsor Castle look like a country cottage.

We haven't even got a royal family with style

Yes, Versailles is more about image, power and propaganda in the age of absolute monarchy.

Our royal family have, since the Glorious Revolution of 1688, been constitutional monarchs and have had the sense to keep it relatively modest (but if you doubt the scale of their wealth just look at the Royal Collection).

I have absolutely no doubt of it.

I blame Oliver Cromwell for everything

No, blame Charles I - last bloody absolute monarch - he started it. Parliament reacted, Cromwell and the military then come to the fore..."

The parliamentarians were just too far ahead of their times. If they'd only waited a hundred years or so, we'd have been spared the rest of 'em.

p.s. I've recently watched the entire series of "By the Sword Divided" on You Tube - '80s drama on the Civil War. Worth watching

I'll check it out.

Ironically, the aims of the French revolutionaries of 1789 were similar to those of the Parliamentarians - to establish a constitutional monarchy.

Just the French kings had an extra century of thinking the sun shone out of Their Royal Fundaments and required tougher action to remove their God given tendencies.

"Would you have president Cameron or ferarge "

The choice isn't between one or the other.

Our PM and cabinet minsiters already represent us abroad and at home in various offical capacities.

It already happens. Cameron has taken quite a few official overseas trips representing us, as has every former PM.

Never said it was anything other than a piece of drama. Fun all the same though, and that gorgeous Gold Blend actress in low cut bosom-heaving period dress

"Tampongate

Needless to say, it was embarrassing for Princess Diana and the royal family, as well as Charles and Camilla."

hmmmm .... chaz and tampons .... let's be honest ... they're both stuck up cunts
