Migrant crisis: EU emergency summit

Jump to newest

EU has begun a crucial summit on the migrant crisis today, but a rift has already emerged on the closure of the main route through the Balkans.

UK has also announced that the amphibious landing ship RFA Mounts Bay will join naval vessels from Germany, Canada, Turkey and Greece in the area.

I think it is a good idea to join in and guard the border.

What do you think? Is it good or bad idea that UK will join?

I think they're pissing in the wind and a solution will come through making a deal with Turkey.

I think it is a good thing we have a presence. You cant sit back and criticise others whilst doing nothing to help. Unfortunately while migrants continue to believe that coming to the UK will solve all their problems, their numbers will continue to increase.

I just wish that there was a better way of supporting them to stay in their own country rather than risking their lives to travel to places that dont want them and will not solve their problems.

David Cameron wants to try and mitigate the migrant crisis and make it seem that the UK is able to influence EU migration prior to the in/out referendum.

If a Country, or Group of Countries (EU) can't protect their borders then they have no hope for the future.

The Mediterranean is a big, long watery border. They're notoriously tricky.

Probably be easier said than done, if gordon brown hadn't sold all our assets and left us with a great virtual wealth and fuck all you can actually put your hands on ie gold, gas and oil. Now we have to scrap it with every other fucker, in all the shitholes of the world for a share of the pot

"Turkey will just screw the useless EU for as much cash and favours it can get its hands on then do fuck all."

EU doubles its offer to Turkey to 6 billion Euro's and brings the visa free travel forward to June.

Oh well. They've done the cash and favours bit now lets see what the Turks give back.

I stand by my original assessment.

I agree, Too little, too late by the EU as per usual. They already fucked Greece over with the Eurozone crisis now they are doing the same again to Greece with the migrant crisis. All people like Donald Tusk and Jean Claude Juncker seem to do is sit around talking about problems while independent nation states take the decisive action they need to take in their own interests. Remind me again, just exactly what are we (the taxpayers) actually paying people like Donald Tusk and Jean Claude Juncker very high fat cat wages for???

Yes you can really trust the Turks, they just took over a newspaper who criticised the government the other day. Everyone knows the Turks are 100% trustworthy.

Ladies and Gentlemen.

The final result of the emergency EU summit is (drum roll, trumpet fanfare)

To have another emergency summit on March 17th.

We bomb their country to rubble and then turn around and say it's not our responsibility to help the displaced people this bombing has created

Makes sense...

Every time I watch it all on the news, I just feel for the children and elderly who are displaced.

I'm not sure where it will all end, but something needs to be done.

We need to spend more than we have on military operations and not expect that people will remain without food or basic human needs, such as shelter and safety.

Longer term thinking and planning is needed whenever we enter other states.

Nice to see Turkey now using this crisis as blackmail to try to get "accelerated" access to EU membership.

Wonder what Donald Tusk and Jean Claude Juncker are secretly agreeing to behind closed doors?

I saw a live press conference last night on sky news which had Donald Tusk, Jean Claude Juncker and the Turkish Prime Minister standing side by side on a stage in front of the worlds assembled mass media. It was interesting what Jean Claude Juncker said that the EU and Greece in particular can send migrants back to Turkey if those migrants had come from Turkey and they deem Turkey to be a safe country. He said this was perfectly legal under the terms of the Geneva convention.

So then using Jean Claude Juncker (and the EU) argument, if President Hollande of France decides to carry out his veiled "threat" to scrap the Treaty of Le Touquet should Britain vote to leave the EU on June 23rd, and France send migrants over the English channel to the south of England, we will be perfectly entitled to send those migrants back to France if we deem France to be a safe country, under the terms of the Geneva Convention all this will be perfectly legal for us to do according to Mr Jean Claude Juncker himself. If its good enough for the EU, Greece and Mr Jean Claude Juncker then surely it is good enough for Britain too.

I tend to agree. With Juncker it seems to be a case of "Do as i say!" rather than "Do what i do!" LOL

I'm curious to know how Geneva law is raised in this context. Certainly, the Geneva Conventions apply to what is going on within Syria and Iraq, but I was under the impression the UN Refugee Convention was the law central to this crisis.

As I see it, we're dealing with a matter that is simply a symptom of modern times. A growing disparity of wealth and an increasingly destabilised Middle East.

The solution, in my view, is simple, but outrageously ambitious and almost impossible to implement. The wealth gap between nations has to be narrowed, and we must move towards a one world government system, so as to improve stability across states. That will deter anyone and everyone from leaving their states of origin.

The talks right now are a little concerning. Turkey are hoping to use their strategic position to accelerate their accession to the EU...but by joining the EU, the 2.5 million refugees currently in Turkey will, in a few years, be eligible for EU citizenship. Seems somewhat counterproductive, if limiting the number of incoming migrants is what EU leaders are aiming for?
