Why oh why can't men on here just have a little chat before asking to meet?

I was fully prepared to get in a taxi and go with the flow!

Now I just feel bored and fancy pizza instead!

Maybe help them out by putting a few things on your profile which could be used as conversation starters. Having a blank profile, to some, may mean you aren't really looking for a chat.
