Dating industry facing self - regulation

As a 1st step after the match.com rapist last week, (government will bring in a code of standards if they don't)

What self regulation would you like to see on FAB?

Example

People blocked after 3 complaints

Criminal background checks

????

Or just wait until the government bring in something daft?

How are these dating sites going to regulate themselves? The women went to the police I assume and told them where they met the man? The police should have contacted the site.

I don't want to see Fab do anything different. It's a free site, and I want it to stay that way. People should take responsibility for protecting their own safety. There are guidelines from Fab on safety on meets (public place, make sure someone knows where you are going/call when you get back etc.)

No-one is suggesting that there should be some form of regulation for picking up random strangers in the pub. Just because Fab has an online presence doesn't mean that the site has any responsibility for what happens between adults away from the site.

What regulation could have stopped a rapist seeking victims?

People have to accept that meeting people off the internet is generally fine but on occasion can have horrendous consequences. Blaming the internet for rapists is as stupid as blaming a pub or nightclub if you got attacked by someone you met there.

Talk of regulation is purely about this governments obsessive desire to control and censor the internet

I suppose sites could insist on face pics for anyone who joins, and with facial recognition technology it's possible they could to link to a database of people considered harmful to the general public.

But this also needs one other thing, for people to be honest and upload accurate pics of themselves. Criminals often aren't honest, people who are purely selfish often aren't honest to those they're trying to dupe, and neither are those with sinister intentions towards others.

Then I suggest Fab does nothing, and we all petition our MPs, pointing out that regulating the dating industry would be like trying to regulate sex. We already know what are legal sexual acts and what is illegal. Fab and dating sites are just means of introducing people to each other, just like going down the pub, or signing up for evening classes, or going to your local church, or copping off with someone you work with (except Fab makes it quicker to find the 'someone' you are looking for lolol)

Is the Government going to regulate pubs, colleges, workplaces, churches, etc etc etc and 'blame' the organisation for illegal acts committed by one of their users? I don't think so! It's pointless and unworkable, and I'm happy to tell my MP so.

If a serious complaint is made to the police I think any web site should assist where they can and if a complaint is made directly to them both members accounts should be suspended, they used to do that on eBay if someone complained.

There's a thread going on now that illustrates just how careful any of us should be about who we meet and what information we give them.

but what could the site do without police involvement.

You would expect the victims to go to the police and then the site to help the police fully with there enquires by giving as much information as they could to help.

If I met someone in a pub and they took me home and raped me my first port of call wouldn't be the pub. But I would expect the pub to cooperate with the police if asked how well they knew the guy and could they assist..

A dating site is just a medium through which to meet people.

If one is a rapist then it is HIM not the site that is at fault.

If it is proven that he is a rapist then the site should remove him.

In the meantime if approached by police they should hand over any information they have.

People who meet in bars etc don't have the luxury of their attacker being traceable......

People over react and blame the medium. He'd have raped in any case. The net just made it easier for him to find women who wanted a date.

I don't want dating/sex sites to be regulated - by themselves OR by the government.

That would only push the kinds of things that I enjoy underground (because they're technically illegal) and that would make it more dangerous for me to meet people on them.

I cannot see why (and how for that matter) dsating sites could and should police/ regulate themselves.

It is surely up to the individual to take precautions and keep themselves safe.

This really would be one step closer to nanny state in my _iew.

As far as I know, unless the person makes a complaint to the police they can't investigate. If the person did make a complaint then the police would contact the site for any help/information.

I think it's a case of common sense. I was told by a good friend, just to make sure. Leave a note on my bed before I left and/or send myself an email with details of who and where I was meeting. What for and from which site... you maybe dead but at least the coppers will get em.

Oooh, you really need to go further than that! I always tell a trusted friend who I'm meeting, where and at what time. I call to confirm that I've arrived at the venue, and I call again within an hour to confirm that he has arrived and that all is OK. If my friend doesn't hear from me after the hour, you can be sure they will be at the coffee shop/pub looking for me, with plenty of pictures of me, to find out where I am.

It just takes a bit of discipline, but it's far better than letting the police deal with something more serious.

The government likes self regulation, as per the food industry and the rest. Almost nothing changes, apart from a lot of puff.

Fab needs no regulation, it's buyer beware, as ever. Same as if you meet someone in a bar etc. Fab self-polices, using its technology and via user feedback. Always report anything, even if it may seem trivial - it allows admin to piece together a good understanding of users, possibly spotting things before worse happens.

Society is generally safe, it's individuals taking unsafe steps and a tiny minority who will abuse others wherever they see opportunity.

I've never done any of that, I've got to admit. I never tell anyone where I'm going. If I don't feel safe with someone after a social then I don't go home with them. And a person isn't going to be able to force me to go home with them from somewhere private.

remember before a meet, ideally there should be plenty chat, both should feel at ease and then the first meet should be planned in a very safe open place, perhaps a coffee shop or lunch date just so both can get a feel of each other and have option to break off

Unlike a site like this were we are after sex with no strings.

Don,t think any one joins a sex site for true love but get told thats how they have met and if they have good luck to them

Anyone who is a victim of any crime, needs to report it to the police. dating websites, broadcasting companies, ice cream vendors etc. are not able to prosecute criminals.
