How can anyone possibly tell if you're making a tit of yourself in LARP? That's what its for!

Yeah but you cant watch, you have to have a character and be the character for the whole time you are in the game.

Its very confusing!

If it's a zombie killing event, make doubly sure they don't dress you as a zombie

I worked the bar near me when a lapping event was on! It was a lot of fun,you can go as absolutely anything you want, the idea is that you do things you wouldn't normally be confident enough to but have always wanted to and plus they bought lots of mead which was a nice touch

Always wanted to to be honest.

Mate has a funny story about some people in Wolves who got so in to a vampire type LARP that it bled into real life.

Bloke used to skulk round multi storey car parks, etc dressed in rubber(phwoar etc), sunglasses and carrying a briefcase filled with talcum powder(substituting for ).

Ended up getting nicked by the police the silly bugger!

I've tried it.. after watching the film rolemodels.

I am a closet geek. I went with the intention of seeing what the supposed top dogs of the UK scene were doing, because I had loads of ideas for creating my own.

I went, it was awful.. every geek stereotype on full display. Like band camp.

No offence intended to those who love it.. bit shit the bed. I was full on assaulted by a man with aspergers.

The organisation was abysmal.

This from one of the UKs number one fantasy LARP experience. I wont name and shame as the original organiser heard me out, loved my ideas.. and invited me to see it for free.

Now I just stick to organising people's parties if they are brave enough to have a roleplay party.. not sexual! Get them d*unk and dressed up.. split people into factions and come up with mini quest ideas.. themes can be anything but fantasy as it scares nearly every non geek rigid.

I used to ride a horse that was used for battle re enactments. He was a clydesdale cross so was used as the drum horse lol

Mate of mine did this, spent the weekend as a Viking warrior and slipped back into character while complaining about some cold chips in a Macdonalds service station on the way home.

Also remember him playing with a mate's dead broadsword in the car park outside his house, getting carried away and nearly putting it through my rear windscreen.

I've LARP 'd in the past. Good fun. Dressing up and buying game legal weapons (usually high impact foam / plastic) can be pricey, but the more you put in, the more you get out.

LARP is great fun if you get into it. I personally prefer smaller local games to the bigger events (15-30 people rather than 100-200) and there's a lot of variety too. From live action D&D to futuristic/sci-fi and everything in-between. High fantasy being my favourite (tolkien-esque/Warcraft worlds) as I tend to learn towards human monks and orc barbarians.

No bokken, foam chucks, alloy butterflies, rubber stars, jo's or bo's then? Out of interest what is the weapon spec because if it's roll play I wouldn't of expected you to be actually hitting each other? I always assumed you showed up and there was some kinda points and dice or something, or what's the point of levels?

No, in most systems you actually hit each other. The weapons are a fibreglass or carbon fibre core covered in thick foam latex. I've never encountered a system that used levels, you use XP to get additional skills and powers.

So the additional skills and powers have no relevance in the fighty bits?

It just struck me if some one like me started I'd go through yall like mad, not because I'm really tough or anything but coz I've spent years developing coordination and well, skill at fighting with swords and stuff. Either that or practicing drawing a katana for a few hours each week for a few years is never ever gonna prove itself as time well spent.

Even if I look lovely in a GI and charming in hakama

The skills do have relevance in combat as they determine what weapons and armour you can use. Training in martial arts would help in terms if coordination, reactions and stamina, but LARP combat and martial arts really aren't the same thing, so martial arts training can hamper you as well.
