Gonna throw my entry in.

forbidden Planet

Yes it's a reworking of Shakespeare.

However

Groundbreaking at the time, good effects, some questionable acting (as all good Sci fi movies should have)

Plus some tension and plus a young floozie who jumps into bed with lieutenant frank drebbin.

Aka a very young Leslie neilson.

Great film and scared the pants off me as a kid.

I love Star Wars, take it or leave it with the prequels, Flash Gordon, Event Horizon, 2001, and totally enjoyed interstellar, Aliens, also Star Trek, especially the voyage home, some funny bits in that one

Silent Running.

Alien . Only the first one; the rest were crappy " shoot 'em up" sequels; Prometheus was promising, but missed the mark, really.

Dune: followed Frank Herbert's ideas quite well.

Pitt they never made any films of any of Asimov's stuff, especially Foundation; they tried with "I, Robot" but it was a complete misinterpretation of Asimov's writing and ideas ...

I will say I know it's not to everyone's liking.

But loved the Spielberg version of war of the world's.

Thought the tripods were proper scarey.

Also hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.

I've got the quadrilogy so watched all versions.

3 was better than 4 but only just.

Prometheus was a bit poor.

But I agree, that was daft.

I know alot of people were disappointed in it, buy I really liked Prometheus. It had a great atmosphere.

And another highly underrated sci-fi that I really enjoyed, John Carter. I remember there being a big fuss about what a flop it was and how crap it was, but, when I finally saw it I thought it was good fun.

I'm tempted to say BladeRunner, maybe even the sequel for keeping the same feel but with modern film making. But then there are also little gems like Spectral which many seem to have missed. Or the classics like Alien.

The very best satirical SciFi film is 1951 film: The Man in the White Suit.

Very frequently still shown on BBC and Freeview.

Very well worth watching on many levels; a maverick scientist invents a white cloth that is intially indestructible, but it firstly attracts greedy investers, who later want to stop it, as also do the workers in the fibre mills

It's not my favourite but I do love it visually - the dialogue is a disaster but it looks amazing and there are some wonderfully grotesque performances.
