I've run a pub and never in a million years would I run one again, long long hours, endless cleaning, endless smiling at customers even those you detest etc

I grew up in this trade most of my life. Hotels/bars/restaurants. My family have always owned a few.

It's an extremely difficult lifestyle. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

My family ran a freehouse for nearly ten years. Bloody hard work

364 1/2 days a year. The only night off was Christmas day

I know a couple of people who run pubs; it's an 5am to past midnight job;

Bloody hard work, and fending off crooks and scammers.

People think it's just standing behind the bar, chatting all day with your mates ....

Absolutely not, there's only one side of the bar for me

My mate used to run one and me and his brother used to help him clean the pipes out on a Saturday morning, we used to get a few free pints for that though and were generally quite tipsy by lunchtime

O have been in the hospitality industry for close on 40 years and my one piece of advice would be ....

DON'T!

It's a hard life, early starts plus late finishes. You have very little time to yourself. Running a pub or being a Licensee impacts on other aspects of life too.

It isn't the mythical image of being "mine host" having the odd drink with friends etc, just one long 7 days a week slog.

Keep the notion in your dreams list.

I wouldn't.

My parents ran about three or four in a row when I was between 6 & 8. I was never neglected and I was always in the flat above the pub or sometimes in the bar, but I remember being quite alone a lot of the time.

I had a pub for 5 years.......... You live it, breathe it and consume it everyday, including a day off if you can get it.

Don't get me wrong I had fun and enjoyed it, but the stress and worry ....... Nearly killed me!!!!

It wouldn't surprise me..

We actually had two incidents with fake firearms

One was on a C&W music night and a guy cane in all dressed up with pistols in holsters.

They were actually loaded with blanks and one was let off by a woman who grabbed the gun.

We removed them and called the police who went on to seize the weapons and charge the man.

The second was a guy who'd bought an imitation glock on the Web, and decided to show it off to his mates. Again we seized the firearm and called in the police.

That weapon was later destroyed

We were in the trade 40 year,s its very hard work now was a job we loved but turned into the job we hated people have changed how they talk to you. Too much red tape and to many children going in parents get pissed and kids run wild

Nope. I don't like pubs to begin with..Full of drinkers and I generally don't like people with a drink in em.

That plus I'd have to be at work in the same place day in day out..

It's all very un appealing really.

Nope. Not ever.

My grandparents owned pubs. As a kid it was fun, but I never understood the hours they put in.

I have been a chef for a long time and worked in my fair share of pub kitchens, mostly which I enjoyed. But I got to go home at the end on my shift. Most pub managers start early in the morning and most won't finish before midnight. It is a horrendously stressful job.

But they seem to love it. It is just not the life for me

I've said it often,, if folk want to find out what hard work is run a pub for a couple of months, ...

Long hours for minimum money, landlords would love to earne minimum wage.

I owned a freehouse

It was hard make making a decent living for the hours

Lord knows how the brewery pubs make money

Lots of work , you have to do loads yourself to save money you have to be nice to people you hate

Everyone wants free drinks and is your mate

If you drink, you will soon be stopping after you see what alcohol does

Been there and done it, it's bloody hard work, long stressful hours, hard to make money doing it, breweries on your back unless your a free house. Most customers were lovely, especially village places, but some horrible especially with a drink inside them. I'd do bar work again, but never run one.

Running pubs is largely a mugs game these days. You see those signs outside pubs saying "want to run this pub?". The reason why it is there is that some poor sod read that same sign a year or two previous, pumped a load of money into the business and now is working 24/7/365 and hardly making a living wage.

A lot of pub tenants want to get the heck out of the business. Its a bit like al those Brits who go to Spain to run a bar.

No,,the only pubs that do well are good quality restaurants that happen to sell alcohol. I pub/restaurant that doesnt have a decent chef will soon fail after being lashed on tripadvisor or similar.

Add to all that the business rates, tied agreements with breweries...no thanks,,i can think of an easier way to make a living.
